What are BB Creams?

BB-creams-1

I am really getting old. When I first read about a ‘BB cream’, for some reason I seriously thought the ‘BB’ meant Best Buddies … goodness!

After looking at these BB creams, I still couldn’t figure out what they were. Even after reading about them, I still didn’t really get it. An all-in-one product, really? I decided to go straight to the source and ask Matt of BBCreamQueen.com to help me and all of those who don’t know what BB creams are.

So Matt, what are BB Creams anyway, and why are they becoming so popular?

BB Creams stand for Blemish Balm Creams, they are in essence a cross between make-up and skincare products. More precisely, they are make-up creams with skincare properties. They can serve as a make-up base or foundation. Not only do they cover blemishes, they also have soothing, healing properties.

I think they are so popular because they are very versatile. They can cut on the amount of products you use during your daily routine as most BB Creams also act as moisturizers and sun block, some others even having other properties on top of that like anti-aging and/or whitening.

How are BB creams different from foundation?

Unlike foundations, BB creams not only cover blemishes but also contribute to the well-being of your skin. Like mentioned earlier, BB creams have various properties that traditional foundations lack. Also, BB creams adapt to the colour of your skin, giving a more natural, fresher look to your face.

What are the benefits of using a BB Cream?

There are various benefits. Instead of applying moisturiser, sun block and then your foundation, you can just use a BB cream, thus cutting down on time and the amount of “layers”, which should always be kept to a minimum. Also BB creams can overtime play a role in the overall well being of your skin, unlike traditional make-up products.

BB creams are also useful on days when you don’t feel like putting heavy make up on but still want your skin to look flawless. Just apply BB cream and you are set. They are great for giving that natural yet fresh and tidy look.

Thanks so much, Matt! Safe to say I’m convinced. I will be researching, looking and definitely reviewing them in the future. Has anyone tried any BB creams yet? Do you have a favorite to recommend? :)

hi, Japanese and Korean makeup has me on a hook. All I do is research for products and read reviews and then select what I think will be good for my skin. Anyways, the best place so far for me with great prices is on ebay…there are tons of people selling bb creams and other products from japan and korea. I love it…I’ve found bb creams for half the prices that the original bb cream brand websites sell. so I would say go through ebay and save a lot of the bb cream brands you like and compare the prices. Also you should try one bb cream you’ve been dying to try instead of buying a lot and then not liking them at all.

Thanks Aveena, so far I haven’t seen anyone I really have my eye on, and I’m not sure if there are some available in my country! (So far I’ve only heard of one place that sells it.) I’m looking though :D

And thanks for the eBay suggestion, unfortunately I have been banned for life from eBay a few years ago, LOL!

I am currently a user of bb cream. At first, i thought bb cream stands for baby cream. How dumb, right?

I would recommend Dr Jart’s Silver Label BB cream. It provides great coverage, even out my skin tone and managed to cover my dark eye circles as well. Fo a night out, I’ll dust on a light layer of loose powder.

I would like to say that BB creams work better on normal, combination or dry skin, rather than oily skin as they are not that oil controling.

Can’t be worse than Best Buddies cream can it? :-P

Thanks for the recommendation, Jesse. I’ll be researching on what’s the best ones and hopefully try it out and review it. I’m a little weary though if they clog pores? Since it does so much BB creams must be heavier? (I don’t have oily skin but very sensitive and prone to reactions and breakouts.)

Hi Renee,

BB creams feel like liquid foundation I guess. Some are thicker providing more coverage, (e.g BRTC) while some are lighter. I think the 2 most popular brands in Korea is Dr Jart & Hanskin? Some far, I had not experienced any bad reactions or breakouts to the bb creams even though I do have pretty sensitive skin. But then again, I do not use it everyday.

Hey, thanks Jesse. I too would not wear it everyday so hopefully breakouts will stay at bay (hehe I can rhyme). I am in the process of trying to get a sample over as I have to try it out before I buy the real thing :-P I think I may look at Dr. Jart, whenever I read ‘BB cream’ that names seems to pop up the most!

Ah I’m a bb cream fanatic. I just bought Missha from Incheon Airport last Sunday. Anyway, it was frustrating way back when people would give me weird looks whenever I mentioned bb creams. It was already raging across most of Asia, but the people here didn’t even know what it was. Glad to know you’ve caught wind of this trend :D Personally I find it a good alternative to foundation. Shade matching is a common problem, though.

Hey Kaye!

Long time no see! Glad to have you back. :) Thanks for your comment and your tip on shade matching – this tells me I should try it out in person (so far I’ve been thinking of just ordering some online). It is really popular here, I keep hearing about it!

Does BB cream only come in light shades, or do they have a variety of different shades available?
