Top 10 Tips for Maintaining Your Perfect Blonde

in Hair,How To/Tips

Whoever said blondes have more fun was not talking about maintaining their color – blonde is one of those tricking hair colors (if it’s from a bottle, that is) to maintain. Luckily for all my blonde readers, Krister Atle, “The Blonde Expert”, has some great “blonde” tips to share.

Atle is originally from Sweden (blonde capital of the world!) and moved to the US about 5 years ago. The son of a Swedish hairstylist, Atle has been working with hair since he was 13 and has developed a golden touch with blondes.

Here are his tips on maintaining your prefect color:

In the Shower

  • Use a clarifying shampoo at least once a week. No matter what shampoo you use, blonde hair must be truly cleaned to maintain its brilliant shine.
  • Wash hair as little as possible. The effects of constant washing, drying, and styling can leave hair dry, damaged, and brittle. By washing your hair less frequently, over time your hair’s natural oil patterns will change; so don’t let greasy roots keep you from having strong luscious locks.
  • Using a half hour protein building treatment twice a week to strengthen your strands. Sealing hair follicles with the layer of protein will also keep chlorine and air pollution from soaking into your hair, which dull or change your hair color.
  • For added depth use shampoos with a gold pigment. Don’t be afraid of gold! Gold tones enhance shades of blonde in their variety.

Outdoors

  • Soak up the sun! Nature does blonde best, so enjoy the sun (while protecting your hair with an SPF, of course) to maintain the perfection of natural highlights.
  • While at the beach, keep leave-in conditioner on hand to minimize tangling. Tangles cause breakage, and breakage dulls shine.
  • Rinse hair immediately before and after you swim to keep your hair at its peak of perfected color.

Styling

  • Try to avoid hair products containing fruit waxes and paraffin. These products are too strong and tend to leave build up, which over time dull color extensively.
  • Avoid using ponytail holders when possible, and never sleep in them. Ponytails only encourage breakage and creases.
  • Using a soft styling cream clumps hair together, making finer hair look thicker and deepens your shade of blonde.

There we have it!

A fellow blonde, Krister definitely knows what he’s talking about, and he opened up his very own private, intimate salon called Persona about a year ago in mid-town Manhattan where he provides one on one personal services to his clients in this exclusive space.
