The Different Types of Brow Products

January 30, 2009   in Eyebrows, How To/Tips

They say eye brows are important because they frame the eyes; the windows to our souls!

To get perfect arches, the first step is to tweeze/wax any extra hairs that are out of place. Then, cosmetics will help achieve a more arched, clean look.

However there are quite different products in the market today for eyebrows, and I hope my guide will help you out.

Different brow products:

  • Brow pencil. Gives great definition to the brows. Also, probably the easiest to use – the pencil gives a very controlled application. Perfect for achieving light, subtle strokes that look very natural.

  • Brow powder. When using powder, choose a slighter lighter shade than your natural brow color, as powders can look very hard. Use brow powder with a slanted, angle brush to get a flawless arch. For even more intensity, you can apply the brow powder wet.

  • Brow gel/mascara. Clear or colored, brow mascaras are just like your typical mascaras. With brow mascaras, however, they are used to shape your brow hairs and keep holding them in place for hairs that are unruly.

  • Brow wax. Brow wax is applied over brow powder or pencil to keep hair in place. Very similar to the brow gel/mascara, just a different texture that is up to personal preference. Usually looks more natural than gels/mascara.

What do you use to groom your eyebrows? I’d love to hear what you all think is the best option!

HEY I PERSONALY USE A BROW PENCIL. CAREFUL NOT TO USE A HEAVY HAND OR A DARKER COLOUR, OR YOU WILL LOOK TOO HARSH! I USE A LIGHTER ONE AND USE SMALL STROKES LIKE YOU MENTIONED. SO GREAT AND TRUE TIP =)

Great tips! =)
I personally use brow powder and brow gel. Even when I’m in a hurry, I’ll definitely use some brow gel (unruly brow is the number one NO NO to me) =P
And yup, tweezing once or twice a week is necessary as well.

I favour the eyebrow pencil, just ‘cos to me, it’s the easiest to use. Although I have heard that dark brown/gray eyeshadow used on the brows would look more natural :)

Thanks ST. and CaramelGeek for your comments! Yup, tweezing is a must to get them neat in the first place!

Tine, what do you think about gray shadows for the brows? When I was looking around at Laura Mercier the lady tried a gray eyebrow pencil on me saying that it was very natural, but it looked really weird on me! :-(

Right now though, I don’t use anything on my eyebrows but I am tempted to try a brow mascara – I got some unruly brows at the end! :-P

Hey. I am obsessed with groomed brows, it really frames the face like you said. Mine have to be perfect at all times!

I get a tweezing every month, then clean up the mess at home.

The I apply powder, (lighter than me as I’m very dark haired, so I don’t want to look too stern, so I keep a light brown powder)

I use a pencil at the ends of the eyebrow since I am bald there LOL. Too much tweezing. Pencil gives a harder look so it’s good for bald areas.

Then I will groom it with a clear gel I bought from Maybelline.

Phew! Three steps to perfect brows :)
