The Body Shop Nature’s Minerals Foundation Review

October 27, 2008   in Face, Make Up, Mineral, Reviews

This impulsing buying has got to stop! Especially since I am broke in the first place!

I passed The Body Shop the other week and saw their stand for their new Nature’s Minerals mineral makeup range and had to take a closer look.

A lot of mainstream brands are starting their very own mineral makeup lines, and The Body Shop is no different! The range includes Foundation, SPF25, Cheek Color, Eye Color, and a Foundation and Eye Shadow Brush.

The prices were pretty affordable, and I thought I should try out their mineral foundation and see if it lived up to it’s wonderful claims:

A premium, up-to-the-minute loose powder foundation, made from minerals. Long-lasting, blend-able powders act like a veil to help defend the skin against sun damage with SPF 25. Ultra light powders apply evenly and blend easily for a radiant, natural-looking complexion. Effectively reduces the appearance of redness, imperfections, blemishes and visible pores.

Without being long winded, I’d say it lived up to its claims, but short term only. I’m not too sure about the whole covering “imperfections, redness, blemishes”, but it did make pores seem smaller and my skin looked smoother. What I liked the most about the powder was that it is extremely light and natural – I hate putting heavy stuff on my face for fear of breakouts! The powder gave a very matte look, which I liked a lot.

However, after awhile it seemed to make my face shine quite a bit, but it wasn’t as bad as some others I’ve tried. Also, so far, no other reactions or complaints other than the minimal shine. (I mentioned this in my post on the pros and cons of mineral makeup.) I wouldn’t call this the best mineral foundation, but it was pretty good, no real complaints here!

So if you’re looking for a powder for full coverage, this is probably not for you. But for those who want a very natural “veil” on the skin so it looks smoother and clearer, I’d say this is a good, affordable choice!

Has anyone tried this? What do you think of mainstream mineral makeup brands?

Great review! I’m yet to try them myself. I haven’t been tempted to get them but I am VERY tempted to get the incredibly soft and dense kabuki brush.
I’m not too enticed by mainstream mineral makeup line. L’Oreal and Revlon had built in brushes that were horrible and the foundation texture was so cakey. I didn’t like them at all. I’d have more faith in TBS and perhaps Laura Mercier mineral foundations though. They seem more “real” than all hype.

Thanks Connie!

The body Shop’s Kabuki brush is SO tiny and cute, and I heard that it’s really good. I didn’t get it though cause I have an old one from some other brand, haha. :-P

I was looking at Laura Mercier and it looks great, but I found it had bismuth, which caused me to itch like crazy cause they had it in Bare Escentuals, so I can’t use it :(

I feel that this mineral foundation is perceived to be good as there is only a few ingredients and the added SPF 25 is great. However the foundation does not go very far. In order to receive a medium coverage you need to use a large amount of the product, and considering how much you pay you do not receive enough product. I understand the so called mineral make-up seems to be the best option for your skin but this product disappointed me. :(

Unsatisfied with this product I do not use it as a foundation but as a setting powder due to the SPF. I really like the Kabuki brush though, it is firm yet soft on the skin. :D

Aw Megan, I’m sorry to hear it didn’t work for you! Like I said in my review – and like you mentioned – it doesn’t go far, the effect lasts only for a while.

I’m glad you liked the Kabuki brush; isn’t it cute? :-P

Hi girls. Thanks for the reviews. I was actually thinking of trying the Body Shop Mineral Make up but not sure if I will now because I have oily skin and don’t need any more shine. I love their Kabuki brush though. I first used it today and my make up looked really nice for once. I was using a cheaper brush from Avon but it was kinda scratchy and really itched my face. If you are looking for a mineral foundation that offers good coverage, you could try Nude. I know most chemists sell it. Sorry, not sure who else stocks it. It’s the same price as the Body Shop make up – $39.95. I haven’t seen it any cheaper than that. And you don’t need a lot of it for a decent application. Hope that helps.

I tried this today… and all I have to say is that the feeling of disappointment when you’ve bought an item SUCKS. You said the price was decent, in my country I paid equivalent of 50 USD. It’s a little expensive for a student.
I asked the lady at the cash register if she could find the lightest shade they had (I’m pale and everything is too dark) and she found it and assured me it wouldn’t be too dark.

When I came home I applied it as shown and understood immediately why they say “it doesn’t clog up your pores. It’s so good you can sleep with it”… well that’s because it’s just a powder – it’s like having nothing on at all. It semi-melted on my skin, like they said it would. However, it did not cover the slightest bit. Nothing! I applied several thin layers with the brush, but still – it was like putting see through powder in your face.
My skin now feels really dry and it didn’t cover at all.

Normal make up may clog up your pores, but at least it works. I’m so disappointed.

That was 50 $ out the window.

Hey there,

I’m sorry it turned out really bad for you! Did you buy it after reading my review? Because I did say in my review that it’s very light and didn’t cover any blemishes, etc, on my face either so if you wanted a heavier coverage you should try something else.

USD$50 is ridiculous, where do you live? They marked it up way too much. I said it’s reasonable because it is when I bought it, where it was USD$27. I’m sorry you feel so cheated but I can’t really do anything about the price where you live. :S

Hey, no I was just stating my opinion. I read your review after I bought it.
From now on, I guess it’s a good idea to read up on things before I buy them, hehe. I only read the advertisments, how it was wonderful for your skin etc. So I guess it’s my fault:]
Just found your blog yesterday. It’s great that you publish honest reports on makeup etc:)
I live in Norway. Yes, things are expensive here – but 50 $ is even expensive for Norway.

Oh ok, phew! ‘Cause I thought you were blaming me so I was like :’(

Yeah, you should def research products online and find reviews on them before you buy them, that’s what I do so I’m hardly dissapointed with products! And advertising will tell you anything so they can sell their product, so don’t believe what they say. Most of the time it’s alot of empty promises.

$50 is way too much, here you can buy very high quality designer makeup… how crazy! Oh and I am from Denmark, so I’m Scandinavian too! (Well, half of me is haha). I’m glad you found my site though, nice to meet you :)
