Should I Wear Makeup When I’m Sick?

in Ask A Beauty Question,Make Up

I once mentioned that when I’m sick, I am so dramatic. I lie in my bed, prophesying that the world is ending because little old me, ordinary Renee in Singapore, is feeling like crap. :-P Dramatic, no? So I really loved N’s small question about being sick and wearing makeup.

Do you wear makeup when you are sick? I still need to go to work when I’m sick but still want to look decent.

Unfortunately, skipping the day and spending it in bed is a rare moment now, because life still goes on: school goes on, work goes on, driving lessons, interviews, you name it. And even though you feel like crap – you really can’t look like it. I’ve read countless tips on makeup to wear when you’re sick, but they were a bit too unrealistic – the last thing you want to think about is if your mascara is smudging when you feel like hell, no?

Here’s some of my advice on what beauty products to wear when you’re feeling under the weather, that can hopefully get you through the day feeling a little more comfortable.

First of all, as much as I would hate to recommend a full foundation face, when you got a runny nose, full of zits, or a general ‘sick’ look on your face, it just makes it look worse. Try a tinted moisturizer instead. You can close you eyes and just apply it on while you lie in bed. Just remember that before you walk out the door, check that they are no harsh lines. If so, blend.

And that’s totally it for face!

For your eyes, unless you can be bothered, try on a bit of mascara to open up your eyes. If you can’t be bothered (like me!), just make sure your eyebrows look a bit groomed. You know what they say … groomed brows complete the whole face. Try an eyebrow product to groom your brows, and read these tips to help you out!

Next, here’s a bit of makeup application required: no matter what you’re sick with, a bit of color will be lost to your face. Get a very light, natural pink and sweep some blush on your cheeks so you don’t look like death.

Last but not least, apply some tinted lip balm. It makes pale lips look alive instantly.

So to recap: a little tinted moisturizer, groomed brows, blush and tinted lip balm. It will take about 5 minutes and is really simple and quick to do, no matter how crappy you’re feeling. With these tips, if you happen to reveal to someone that you are feeling under the weather, they will say you still look great. (Which we all love, no?)

I hope my tips have helped!

Do you wear makeup when you’re sick? I apply those tips above when I have to go out and face the world while I’m sick, but if I’m at home – hell no! I am lying in bed, face bared and being dramatic as usual. :)

Yes! The type the dogs wear! Hmm… I’m out. So sunglasses, a hat, a scarf, lampshade and a paper bag… Might as well add a straight-jacket too. haha

I always wear basic make-up when I’m sick to make myself feel better about feeling like death warmed up! I’ll usually just leave out the eyeshadow and contact lenses :)

if your worried about mascara smudging/running what about using a waterproof one? Also i like to onceal the redness around my nose event hough it’ll probably get rubbed off after all the nose blowing but i find that it really makes me feel better about my looks if my nose isn’t too red :D

Oh yeah redness around the nose, especially with nasty colds and sniffles :(

Waterproof mascara is a good option but I personally find that my lashes tend to fall off afterward, ’cause its quite hard to remove! Do you have a favorite waterproof mascara?

Always, always under-eye concealer for me. When I get sick my sleep patterns are always the first to go! And that white eye-pencil for the inner corner of your eyes, to make you look a bit more awake. I skip mascara when I feel icky, but I wear glasses so for me it isn’t such a big deal.

Crème blusher is great when you’re ill- it lasts way longer than powder and doesn’t “sit” on the face so much. That and the rose-tinted lip balm Vaseline do are absolute sick-day essentials for me.

Oh, and Kleenex balm tissues- they don’t stop you getting red-nose completely, but they do help and they feel nice :-)

Great tips, Jen, thanks for writing! Totally agree on under eye concealer, for me that’s #1 too. My dark circles are deathly! :-P I also agree that cream blusher looks so natural and lasts a long time. Unfortunately those in hotter climates or have oily skin can’t wear it well, though. I break out!

Heyy dear Renee how are you??=)
Great tips!! I actually wear tinted sunscreen u know? FPS 40! I have oily skin that´s why i never wear moisturizer…. Ohh and Blush is definetly the most important! U have to look healthy!!! But I usually dont wear make up everyday…. one of these days i felt too pale and I had a bad night sleep and it looked like i was sick, so I put some blush to elevate my self esteem a litle bit and went to school, at night.
OK, then a weird guy in my class asked me if I was natural rosy because it was too much cold that day… oh god, after that I stopped wearing it to school and my friends keep amking jokes about it hahahah
But it works right, i guess blush makes u instantly look healthy, AND concealer!!!

Hey Deb! I’m good, how are you? :)

Tinted sunscreen sounds awesome, I wanted to find a good one here but there’s none so far? :(

Haha that guy is RUDE, tell him to shut up! But it’s true, concealer and blush really helps to ‘lift’ your face if you’re looking a bit pale and sick!

I always use make up… no matter what… I usually wear some eyeliner to make eyes pop and of course, my beloved mascara!
