I got another reader e-mail the other day from S, that asked about hair coloring that could help others wondering the same thing:
I really love the Hollywood trend of dark black hair with Megan Fox and Angelina Jolie leading the way. Should I dye my hair jet black? I have quite fair skin but I really want black hair to suit me.
I do agree that there seems to be a dark hair trend, but if you look closely, these ladies do not have jet black hair – instead, it is a very deep dark brown. I suspect it might have to do with the fact that black is a very permanent color (and you know how those Hollywood ladies change their look a lot!)
For Stef, and another one else considering to dye their hair, there are a few things to consider:
- Black does not fade – ever!
- You can’t color over it if you change your mind.
- Since you can’t do anything about the color, there will be a long growing out process before you can do anything about the color again.
So think long and hard if you are tempted to get jet black hair. Also, black hair is quite a contrast on fair skin and can wash some people out, which I believe was a concern for Stef, but I have also seen it being done beautifully.
My advice will be dying your hair the darkest brown, like Brown Black from Revlon; it will look black enough, trust me. It is really up to you though, but remember those warnings!
Any dark-haired girls that can help Stef and others who want to go dark out?
Oh, and if you have beauty question as well, just e-mail me and I’ll be more than happy to help!

This is such a tricky question because it’s really hard to pull off a totally black hair color. You’re so right, most of those women have a very rich, dark brown hues in their hair. Black hair can be gorgeous but it’s a really big decision with no turning back!

Hey Stef, Danielle here…im one of those black haired gals and I just want to say I think it will definatly suit you..but it cant suit everyone..some people look nicer with a lighter shade of black but Im sure it will look gorgeous on you!!!
I dyed my hair black when I was in high school..It was a really bad idea. Now that I want to go back to my natural hair color, I’m obliged to let them grow and it’s not very beautiful, trust me ! Plus, jet black hair tend to make your features seem more “harder”, I think ( i don’t know how to explain what i mean in good english, sorry :/). In a nutshell, if I could have foreseen the future when i was in high school, I would have chosen a dark brown ^^ Or you can choose a faddish color like l’oréal color pulse, to try it without the commitment to keep it :p
(sorry for my comments which are always too long ^^)
Thanks for your tips, Krib!
And don’t be silly. I love your comments and appreciate them, they are not long at all! :) I always agree with your comments, and agree about how you said black hair can make your features stand out more and look a but harsh – definitely agree that you should go for a dark brown, sometimes it looks just like black as well :-P
well im thinkiing about dying my hair black and i have light brown hair and everybody is tell me i wuld look better if i died my hair black and i think its a good idea and i want my friend 2 do it cause she dyed her hair blonde and looks amazing wat should i doooo!!!HELP MEE!!!!!!! (^^^)
Hey, if you think you’ll like it, go ahead! Just warning you that it will take a loooong time to grow out if you change your mind! It’s really up to you! :D Or you can always try a semi permanent color and see how you like it first?
i’m pale with dyed dark brown hair and used to have black hair, i loved it but i just moved on to other colours, i’m not sure if everyone liked it but i did. i really want it again but i don’t want to be classed as emo! also, i want black hair because then i can get clip in extensions that look real because they are the exact colour and i can’t find any to match my hair colour! confusing i know :P
Nah, not confusing, I know what you mean! I’m glad to hear black hair suited you so much and you loved it! I guess to not look ‘emo’ it’s more for the cut – emos tend to have very layered, straightened shirt cuts and side bangs. Haha, I’m not to sure though, it’s your hair. And don’t care what people think of you, let them think you are ‘emo’! :-P
yeah,i’m 16 and i dyed my hair black… I guess i’m one of the lucky ones who can pull off the look,my skin in caramel colored, and i’m a natural brunnete…kinda dark colored chocolate brown hair. i wanted to magnifie my features more so i took a risk and dyed it black,it looked GREAT!!! aside from the fact that i ran outta dye cause i have ALOT of hair…and so now i have about 95% black hair and a bit of some sections of brown (but i intend to dye the rest later)… but alot of people didn’t even seem to notice that it was dyed, people assumed it was natural which was GREAT,i suppose cause my natural color looked black in certain lights…but i LOVE it!!! i think people with dark and caramel colored skin like me can pull off black hair cause it looks more natural near our skin tones, plus it brings it out and the eyes too. People with pale or fair skin i would suggest NOT dyeing it black, cause it can bring out their skin tones and make them look even more PALE!!! and you can tell that its FAKE… belive me i know, givin the fact that alot of my teen friends have experimented with it and came out looking like Angelica Houstin in The Adams Family…lOLZ.
Even people with naturally black colored hair don’t have really black hair. Actually, black hair on humans doesn’t exist in nature though some people, for lack of knowledge, ignorance or lack of fake jet-black hair to contrast with insist they have black hair. Fair enough, but my point is that jet-black is hard to pull off on anyone for the above reason- even naturally black hair is really just hair that’s so dark brown it appears black; Darker than the shade hairdressers call ‘darkest brown’.
