Sephora’s blog, Beauty and the Blog, wrote an interesting post about Target’s latest poll, which was all about red lipstick. (Good thing too, I wore my very first red lipstick on Halloween and now I’m obsessed! I was just planning to find the perfect red lip color to wear on New Year’s Eve.)

Red is a power color. Want an instant boost of confidence? Slick on something crimson.
Target found that more than 60 percent of women and men think that when a woman adds an extra punch of color to her beauty palette, she’s signaling that she feels fabulous about herself – and after all, added confidence is the ultimate accessory.
Additional Target poll findings:
- Almost 40% of women who wear red lipstick do so to feel feminine, while 37% do it to feel sexy.
- To dress up an outfit, 44% of women wear high heels and 61% get their hair done.
- The majority of men and women polled (33%) named Angelina Jolie as the celebrity who has the most sought-after red lips. Duh!
- 61% of respondents perceive wearing red on lips or nails as neither “naughty” or “nice” – showing that there are no stereotypes associated with this versatile shade.
I love the last point; personally, I think red lips can look sexy, naughty, nice, classy – everything! (If you’ve got the color and have no idea what to do, my post How to Apply Lipstick may help.)
Do you wear red lipstick? What occasions/places do you wear them too? What does it mean to you? So many questions!

Although I find that red lipstick is super nice, I do have to say that I never dare to wear it. When I do, I feel that I look a bit too much, a bit vulgar. As soon as I do, I hear my mother telling me, Maelle it’s too much, you look too much… haha.. and shes not the stiff kind… But the truth is I agree with her, it’s sometimes too much on some.
Of course girls like Angelina Jolie can pull it off but girls like me, I guess not…
this touches close to home. haha. my mother is the queen of red lipstick. shes never without it. it makes her feel great and confident. when shes without her red lips, she looks so different! i guess we are all used to it. i myself have not tried it out yet but will have to one day. so to me red lips mean… MUMMY! haha.
Oooh I love your comments girls!
I think like Maelle said, red lipstick can easily look ‘too much’. Red is tricky in that sense – it can look very trashy and very classic, it’s all about the color, the shape of your lips, the rest of your makeup, and of course the outfit you are wearing!
Lacey, my mom wears red lips as well … Every type of red! For myself I’m going to go for more of a coral color
Hey (:
Red lipstick can produce many ideas. BF I agree with your statement that it depends on your clothes. Net stockings, short leather skirt and red lipstick is trashy, yet a LBD, body waves and red lips? Classic and demure. So it really depends on the outfit.
To me, red lips signify a special occasion, certain authority. Because I only wear red lips to fancy dressy parties
Good discussion by the way (:
The problem is that people do seem to think that there is only one shade of red. There is a shade of red for everyone (pretty much). A problem arises when a woman feels like it is not her, in which case maybe most of these women would feel it most comfortable for evening wear.
Agree with both of you, Min and Kelly! Red lipstick looks amazing with a little black dress, and it could be a bit intimidating for daywear, so it’s perfect for evening wear … I’m trying it tonight for New year’s eve!
if youve got lips like Angelina Jolie, who cares if youre wearing red lipstick!
my sister often puts on red lipstick on her thin lips even when she’s going out to buy food from macdonalds!
I love red lips! So hot and sexy. I like this post, this is a good topic. Red lips can mean lots of different things to many. LIke you wrote, nice, naughty, sexy….it really reveals lots of look! I do red lips all the time since I have full lips. I get a lot of attention and lots of people tell me it’s beyond sexy
Interesting post!
