Physiognomy and Face-reading: What does your face say about you?

October 22, 2009

in Face,For Fun,Self Image

Has anyone ever pointed out a physical feature and assume something about you? I remember being told never to trust a man with thin lips because they are cunning and manipulative – is that ridiculous or does it actually hold some truth?

Physiognomy (I can’t say it either), or face reading is pretty popular here – there are centers where you can get your face read to discover your ‘inner self’ or something along those lines. I’m pretty curious so I did my research and it’s extremely interesting… Let me know what you think!

Where this study came from is unknown (some say Greece, India, and China), and in the 19th Century Victorian times, face reading was practiced by criminologists with the assumption that certain facial features on someone may make them more prone to breaking the law! According to physiognomy, different parts of your face reveal different aspects of your character and personality. Some also believe any ‘complications’ that you are having on the face could show what’s going on internally, like the image above.

  • Forehead: Your way of thinking
  • Eyes: Shows insight on how open you are to life experiences
  • Nose: Work and how you deal with money
  • Mouth: How expressive you are
  • Lips: How sensual you are
  • Chin: Your level of assertiveness
  • Ears: How you interact with others

Believe it or not – those with cosmetic surgery can count their ‘new’ feature as their own, as cosmetic surgery is believed to change your luck.

If I’m being very honest, with all due respect, I find this a bit silly, but none the less it is quite interesting and some are eerily correct! Grab a photo of yourself that is a frontal face shot (or look in the mirror as you read this) and see what your features tell you about yourself. They differ for men and women, so I have also added face reading for men so you can go an analyze your boyfriends too. :-P

  • Short mouths shows a man who is greedy, quarrelsom and wicked.
  • Big mouths indicates a bold nature.
  • Thin lips show intelligence.
  • If the lower lip is big and protruding, it shows a hardworking man who is unfaithful.

What do you think about face reading? From my face reading, I am sensitive, a worrier, very lucky, leading a comfortable life, a strong character, and apparently I’m sexy! I have an inability to reciprocate in relationships, yet I am generous and expressive and has a taste for all the rich and luxurious. I am also lazy, strong headed and proud. A bit contradictory, so I’m not so sure, but I do agree with some of them! :-P What does your face say about you?

Perhaps these things are only telling because they mark undesirable physical attributes as being signs of unhappiness/unluckiness?

Of course you’re going to feel better about your life if you have big, full lips, large eyes, evenly placed ears and bow-shaped brows. Or, at least, more lucky than someone who has small lips and eyes with crooked ears.

Regardless, these things are always fun to read.

Hey Molly, thanks for your comment :)

Yeah, seems to be but there were a few nice descriptions, although very little of them! :-P

I guess I agree with you on that one, it has been proved that physically attractive people get more opportunities but then again what is considered beautiful? Ooh… *blog idea bubbling in my brain* I think you brought up a very cool topic! I shall write about it in the future, so look out for it… and THANK YOU! :D

Yeah, regardless it’s all a bit of fun, like Ruth said below, take it all with a grain of salt!

Haha. Hey you – you’re gonna be a thief! :-P

I have to say though, I ‘checked back’ with a few guys I knew and what they said there and a lot of it was correct, so who really knows! And pffft I’m sure you are loving and caring in relationships! They say that for me too but then I’m a generous person? Which one is it?! Haha :-P

You know I’ve heard the same thing. Supposedly if you have a “lucky” mole removed surgically, you won’t be as lucky anymore. *boggle*

I think I will have to agree with the short men who tend to be cunning, I might also add evil!!!! I think Hitler!!! Haha!!! This is a great post, thank you Renee, but have to be read with a ‘tongue in cheek’ attitude!!!!!

Haha Hitler was a short man! Haha. And yeah, it’s all a bit silly, I find it’s the same as horoscopes – some are coincidently correct but majority of the time it’s just silliness! I would love to go to a center here though, to really see what it’s all about! :-P

Hey Renee, nice blog there. I’ve always been pretty intrigued with face-reading and all that sort of stuff – fortune-telling yada yada. Really interesting to learn about this though we tend to believe the good stuff and dismiss the bad! Human nature, I suppose haha.
Anyway, glad to find someone who shares the same optimism about life! :)

Hey Hui, thank you for stopping by. Glad to see new faces around here! :D

I’m intrigued as well, but mostly I think stuff like this is a bit silly, although most of the characteristics they wrote are negative!

And yes to optimism. Life is good :) xx

just a little thing to say about the “author’s” last note: he/she says that some facial features of his have “contradictory meanings” about his character.
this is very common, it means u are this AND that..
maybe a bit of this and a bit of that.
maybe u are THIS in certain cases and THAT in other cases/circumstences
it is often not as simple as we may think it is.. the human character is a very sophisticated phenomenon. we are made of contradictions :)
as long as they dont collide. its YAY! :)
powerful. complementary.
i want to be at peace with the “diversity” that takes place in me.
it doesnt mean im “many”, it just means im rich ;)
