Being a beauty blogger (or a woman, I should say), it’s almost a given that I love makeup, hair, and all that good stuff.

Self grooming, improving oneself, feeling better about oneself and playing around with different looks is what this world of beauty is all about. However, as much as I like taking these steps to look ‘good’ (or at least try), I am not sure if I am one to cross over to the more “serious” stuff, namely lasers, chemical peels and cosmetic procedures and surgery.

It was only when I went to the Skincentuals A.G.E. Eye complex event and met Dr. Karen Soh, who kindly offered to let me try out a laser treatment to see what it was all about. I was a little hesitant, but agreed.

The laser treatment that I received was Revlite, the best q-switch Nd-yag laser machine in the market (aren’t I spoilt!). It was at the lowest rate possible (since I’m such a chicken) and the laser is the gold standard for improving pigmentation, skin texture, pore size, sebum production. It has also been studied to improve acne, acne scars and fine wrinkles. No doubt I was trying something extra-ordinary!

To be honest, though, whilst going in, I was petrified. The only thing I had ever done to my face was smash it in a glass table and the edge of a swimming pool (I was a clumsy kid) and got it stitched up again, but willingly let tiny laser beams zap my face? Hell no. This was a big deal for me! However, Dr. Soh assured me that you hardly feel anything and that the results were so amazing – not to mention so quick notice – that I would change my mind and see how worth it it was. So, I relunctedly gave it a go.

The prepartion time was a little stressful. I was paranoid and thought my face would fall off, so I quizzed Dr. Soh on the worse side effect that could happen, and she explained that you may break out in zits after, since the lasers help “bring out” what’s deep inside. Since that was it, I relaxed a bit, but still ended up shaking right before it was done. In fact, I was so terrified Dr. Soh told me she would let me try the Revlite laser zaps on my hand first, and if I really couldn’t take it I didn’t have to do it. I felt so embarrassed for being such a baby, but honestly, it was scary. I started relaxing quite a bit after testing two laser snaps on my hand, which didn’t hurt at all, so I went for it.

The first step was to apply numbing cream all over my face, and I believe that for a few minutes I felt what it was like to be completely Botoxed – a really strange feeling, by the way. Dr. Soh started the laser at the right side of my face, down my chin, onto my cheeks, the left side of my face, and then my forehead.

I am glad to report I survived. However, not without a few “OW, OW, OW! OK ENOUGH!” yelps. For some strange reason, it didn’t hurt too much on my cheeks and chin, but the side of my face and forehead? OUCH.

Fortunately, once it was all done, I realized that once again I was being a drama queen, because it really wasn’t that bad at all. The zaps feel like a tiny rubber band snapping on your skin, which isn’t too much. My skin was a tad pinkish after, but it was hardly noticable. After, her assistant Linda applied a serum and sunscreen. (Dr. Soh kindly gave me a vial of the serum and I shall review it soon – it is iS Clinical’s Active Serum, a product heavy raved about in many high-end fashion mags.)

When I came home about half an hour later, I looked in the mirror and was stunned. My skin looked plump, clear and my skin was radiant and glowing. It looked like a young child’s skin; you know – the skin we have before all the crazy hormones start! I showed my mom and she was impressed and said my skin was glowing like no other. The results, to sum up, were nothing short of extraordinary.

WTF: Photoshopped Babies

January 3, 2010   in In The Media

photoshopped-baby-2So apparently photo shop doesn’t stop at models in fashion magazines or aging celebrities who are obsessed with showing off their ‘best’ face.

One of my favorite bloggers, Mia Freedman from MamaMia, recently wrote a post on the disturbing new trend of photo shopping babies.

Yes, you read right. People actually photo shop the “fat rolls” off their bodies and digitally add makeup to babies. Here’s an excerpt on the story at MSNBC that prompted Mia’s post. Feel free to feel disgusted, as I am!

As members of the viewing and reading public, we tend to understand that magazine cover photos are mussed with, fussed with and retouched so that everything looks as perfect as it possibly can. Skin tones are smoothed out; large pores are hidden; stray hairs are concealed.

parenting-mag-photoshopped-babyBut when a casting director for a UK magazine announced on a British reality show that he had airbrushed a baby’s photo so as to hide the creases on his chubby little arms, the world came unglued. On both sides of the Atlantic, the practice was decried as shocking — even by politicians.

A casting director for Practical Parenting magazine explained — on camera — what happened to get Hadley’s photo ready for prime time.

“We lightened his eyes and his general skin tone, smoothed out any blotches and the creases on his arms,” he said. “But we want it to look natural.

Esther Corbett told the Telegraph that she wasn’t at all bothered — or remotely surprised — about what was done to her son’s photo. “You kind of know that they do it because if you look at the front cover of magazines, most of the images don’t look really real,” she said. “But it didn’t put me off.”

When asked whether the kinds of changes described by the casting director — lightening a baby’s eyes, altering skin tone and smoothing out fat rolls — are done routinely, Delaney replied: “It is a photograph, isn’t it, so you have to make sure that you are putting the baby across in the best light.”

Read more here.

Oh wait. I get it. Babies are meant to look like little alien people these days!

But seriously – what is the world coming to? Last time I checked, chubby cheeks and “fat rolls” are adorable on babies. Do you have any thoughts on this?

P.S.: I saved the most disturbing for last:

Happy New Year, everyone! Can you believe it? 2010! Now that it’s a brand new year – and a brand new decade – it’s time to start living with no regrets and achieve your dreams.

Have you decided what your New Year resolutions are? I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with them … I am so determined on the 31st about my goals, but by the 2nd of January I’ve forgotten all about them!

However, I do have a resolution this year to start off the new decade, but if you don’t really have any resolutions, may I suggest some? Here’s a little dose of inspiration for you to start the year off. I hope you like them:

  • Tell that special someone how you feel about them. Open up … life is short.
  • Give up the grudge from the past. Forgive and move on.
  • Celebrate everything.
  • Stop gossiping. Not a good look on anyone.
  • Focus on the good, not the bad.
  • Take risks often.
  • … But always listen to your gut. It’s ALWAYS right.

As always, feel free to add your own to my list! Also, if you do have any practical New Year resolutions, I’d love to hear them. As well as listening to my own advice above (I like to practice what I preach), my resolution for 2010 is that I am going to become an early riser and a morning person.

These past few months my sleep has been insane; some nights I find myself up until 6am doing who-knows-what. I am determined to kick my night owl ways because I feel it’s really affecting my health and my social life – I can never do stuff in the mornings and afternoons because my lazy bum is still in bed! No more.

Do you have any New Year’s resolutions and goals? How is this going to be your year? ;) And to make sure we’re still sticking to our goals, I’ll do a follow-up post to see how we’re all doing and to give you a virtual kick in the butt if you’ve slacked off! ;)

Update 01/01/2010: Wow, it felt so weird typing “2010″! Happy New Year! How did you celebrate? Did you do anything crazy or did you have a quiet evening? I ate way too much as usual, so I ended up having a stomach ache (story of my life!) but I had a great time with family and friends. The picture above was my ‘outfit’ for the night, but I believe it was a bit ridiculous so I got a few laughs and stares!

notebook

Now that it’s December (wooooohoooo), 2010 is drawing closer and closer to us. Which means a brand new year for all of us – even Beauty Fool!

I want to have this post up and running while I take a little Christmas break to collect your thoughts and suggestions for BF.

Some questions I’m interested in for feedback are…

  • What topics would you like to see more of?
  • What type of posts are your favorites?
  • What posts do you like the least?
  • What do you think of the design? Does it give you a headache or does it bore you? Is navigating around BF easy or a real struggle?
  • Someone suggested through e-mail about a forum/message board area of some sorts. Would you be interested in that? Would you like more community based features, and if so, any ideas?
  • What do you think of me as a blogger? Are there any areas you would like me to improve in? (I welcome all constructive cristism but I do have feelings, play nice!)

So many questions! I know it’s been a bit quiet this month but December this year is extra stressful for some reason - more on that later. I’ve written a ton of posts that I want to save for the new year, as well as some exciting news to share!

Basically with this post I’d like to know how you think BF is going and if you have any feedback and suggestions so we can start 2010 of with a BANG! Feel free to write about anything you want, it doesn’t have to be only the questions I asked above. Thanks so much in advance and I’ll speak to you soon! Happy holidays everyone. :)

angeline-jolie-lips

You know Angelina Jolie, always walking around with her pretty children and those ridiculous lips of hers? Well, there is exactly one makeup trick that separates a colored lip and a colored voluptuous lip – and it’s a simple, clear gloss. In fact, this beauty tip is so ridiculously easy I wish I had told you all sooner; I especially wanted to tell you now just in case anyone wanted to do a little extra to their lips this holiday and party season.

beauty-tip-pic

Here’s what to do: After applying your lipstick, take a clear lipgloss and dab a tiny amount of gloss to the center of your bottom lip … Seriously, that’s it. This gives the illusion that it is fuller, and leaves a full colored lip looking a bit ‘alive’ as opposed to flat and one-toned.

(Also, if you’d like a lipgloss recommendation, I love the Clinique’s Full Potential and Bare Escentuals’ Buxom Lips.)

Have you ever tried this tip? It really does make a subtle difference, don’t you think? I also doesn’t look like you have full lip gloss on, but gives a tiny bit of that extra va-va-voom.

My Best Beauty Finds of 2009

December 16, 2009   in Diary

best-beauty-finds-2009

Phew, what a year! I can’t believe it was a year ago where I wrote about my best finds of 2008! Time sure does fly. Beauty-wise, I tried a handful of new products, and found some stand-out ones. Here’s some of the products I found to be the best this year:

  • Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer. I tried this exactly this time last year when my friend C came down to Singapore for Christmas. I had told her all the wonderful things I heard about Laura Mercier, so one afternoon while we were shopping, we went to check out the counter. We both tried this and fell in love. However, the price had us standing there for a while wondering if we could really spend almost 90 bucks on a tube of product. In the end we did, but for those who plan on using it everyday, this may be a bit too expensive. I’m not sure if C still uses it, from what she told me she used it everyday and it was done within a few months, so it really is quite an expensive product to buy twice a year. For me however; a year on and it’s going strong, and I use it twice a week max, and very little at a time. If you’re one who wants a flawless look and only needs a little product and coverage, this will go a long way. Here’s my full review.
  • Chanel La Ligne Duo eyeliner. I know this was mentioned last year but it deserves a second mention. Over the summer after my trip to Europe I had stopped using it (big mistake) and just used normal eyeliner pencils, but meh … I think my eyes and I suit liquid liner, so I started using this again the past few weeks and I love it. It really is flawless; and the color is unexplainable – it is black so to speak, but when you layer the eyehshadow with shimmer on top, something happens and it turns into a beautiful midnight color with a hint of blue. Love it! Here’s my full review.
  • Clinique Lash Power Curling Mascara. I really need to give some other mascaras a chance, I can’t harp on about Lancome’s Virtuose all my life! Nevertheless, I tried this mascara out this year at the recommendation of Christine, and it really is a great mascara. It can give both a dramatic and natural look. You can read a guest review from C about it here, or read my review here.
  • The Body Shop Body Butters. These tubs have been around since forever, and I’ve used them for awhile in the past, but I never really appreciated how good they were until I was given a new tub this year and decided to write a proper review on them. They are fantastic at moisturizing, wonderful smelling, and is a real treat applying – so relaxing! You can read more at my review here.
  • Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel. Oh, another Clinique on a the list! I’m a big supporter of all things Clinique skin care because it has really changed my skin. This Gel version of their famous moisturizer is no exception – I LOVE this product. I can slap on as many layers as I want and it would never clog up or grease my skin. When I apply it at night, I wake up and my skin looks and feels like a baby’s bottom! Love it. You can read my review on it here.

That’s my favorite beauty finds this year! What about you? Did you find any great products this year? I’d love to hear about them! :)

w3ll-people

If you’re looking for a foundation that not only does it’s job (properly, that is) and is good for your skin, well… (pun intended) I think I may have found an option for you: W3LL People’s Narcissist Concealer and Foundation stick. In fact, I will go so much as to say I think I may have just found a gem of a product, ladies!

W3ll People is a supernatural mineral, organic makeup line created by Cosmetic Dermatologist Renee Synder, Makeup-artist and former NARS Corporate Leader Shirley Pinkson and Treehugger James Walker. What a team! With that being said, I like what I hear. (Plus … I have to support my fellow Renee. ;) )

The Narcissist Concealer and Foundation Stick has plenty of benefits: first, it’s 100% toxic free and 100% natural. This means natural ingredients that don’t harm the skin, and you won’t find any nasty petrochemical, parabens, preservatives or phthalates. The stick also contains a mix of anti-oxidants such as organic green tea, reishi mushroom and pomegranate. And just to be even more ridiculous (in a good way), it also has oil absorbing silica to control shine, has an SPF 10 and nourishes the skin with organic sunflower oil and organic wild harvested bayberry….

I told you I found a gem.

Before I get to the review – can we please talk about the name ‘Narcissist’? Genius! I always said if I ever had a makeup line (that will never happen) I’d call it Narcissist or something along the lines. Love the name! Also, I love the fact that it’s organic – I mentioned that I’m using an organic loose power and really love it, and hoped to find an organic foundation as well, so I am really loving organic products – I know I’ll never get breakouts from them.

Though I’m not so much a fan of foundation so much right now, let’s be honest – I’d need all the help I can get when I’m older. Narcissist is a great alternative for those days when I may need a heavier coverage. It’s in a cream stick formula, so you know that the product is quite thick – no way will I be applying this straight to my face, unless I want a real ‘mask’ look. The best method I found to apply this as a foundation or concealer was to either use my fingers and ‘pat’ the product on, or a concealer or foundation brush. Also, a damp foundation wedge sponge would work really well. It is easy to apply and goes on smoothly.

Like I said above, a real gem of a product. The only ‘con’ I see is that it is US$38, but I’ll look past that as foundations these days cost the same, yet aren’t as good for your skin as this. Also, it’s a fairly big product and you don’t use a lot at one go, so I could see this lasting for years.

What do you think about organic and natural foundations? Do you use them? Do you find them to be better than ‘regular’ foundations? I sure do! :)
