I really need to stop getting girl crushes because RPattz is getting a bit jealous. But I can’t help looking at their amazing hair and makeup styles! First Alexa Chung’s style, Kristen Stewart’s eye makeup, and now Hayley Williams of Paramore’s hair and makeup – all great girls who have amazing style that I admire … OK, am totally jealous of.

I’ve loved Paramore for some time now and was really impressed with their new album, Brand New Eyes, and when I saw the music video for my fave song, Ignorance, I gasped. I love Hayley’s bright red hair and strong eye makeup, so I had to post. Also, let’s just be honest – the girl is beautiful.

Skin

Hayley did a guest blog post on Seventeen.com all about her beauty secrets, and she especially wrote about her skin and hair. For her skincare regime, she uses the La Roche Posay skin care line and Elta SPF 45 sunscreen everyday. She says though these products are costly, they are worth it because her skin has never felt better – it got really bad from the stress and lifestyle of touring. Plus, she adds, “I’m obsessed with skin.”

Hair

Hayley has sported various hair colors such as red hair, blonde hair, orange, black… and looks amazing with all of them.

Personally I love red the best,(thanks for asking) but whatever color you are planning to dye your hair to, here are some tips; especially because it’s such a bright color:

  • First and foremost, I know it’s boring, but read the instructions on the box. With subtle colors you can afford to make mistakes, but not with bright reds and oranges! Read the instructions carefully and be informed on all the steps.
  • Start off by applying Vaseline all around your hairline to keep it from running down your skin.
  • Apply the haircolor gel with a comb carefully, making sure you don’t miss out any bits.
  • Wrap your hair in a cap for however long the hair color box advises.

For those with darker hair colors, I’m afraid the dreaded bleach will be needed. If that’s the case, I highly advise taht you go to a hairsalon and get it done properly instead of at home. Ask your stylist for tips on how to keep the color bright, and how to ‘update’ your roots at home.

Hayley advises that the way she gets at least 3 weeks of solid bright color is to “try to part from the shower a few days…liberate yourself. Use Johnson’s baby powder or Bumble and Bumble’s hair powder (which comes in a few different colors) in the roots to keep your hair looking full and (sorta) clean between washes.” She then washes her hair with color-safe shampoo in freezing cold water.

To style her hair, Hayley uses Redken wax and to keep her hair in good condition, she uses Redken Extreme Anti-Snap leave-in conditioner. (Good choice too, I love it and highly recommend it as well!)

As for her haircut, it seems to have remained the same for a few years. Ask your stylist for a mid-length cut (just above your chest), long, choppy layers, and a side-swept bang … et voila! Rock and roll! Now on to my favorite topic …

beauty-tip-pic This week’s beauty tip comes from my mom (her last one was about making your own nose strip, which I hope you found useful!) and said she read this in a magazine a few years ago and it worked for her “quite well.”

If you’re running about your day and noticing your hair is getting a little but frizzy, don’t fret. Take some of your hand cream that you carry around in your bag, rub it throughly through your palms, and finger comb it through your hair. This helps to “settle” the frizz until you get home and takes exactly 2 seconds to do.

So simple! Thanks, Mama. Has anyone tried this tip? :)

shaved-side-hair-style

I love a good hair trend. The crazier the better! However – I’m a total coward and I’d rather look at the wild looks than sport it on myself.

Nevertheless, as much as I love crazy do’s, (remember we spoke previously about two toned hair color that I loved?) I did spot a new trend that I’m a little shocked at – shaving one side of your head. Kudos to the ladies above who dare to try out this wild style, but talk about commitment! I can only imagine that a truckload of extensions for a few years would do if these girls decide to grow their hair out.

What do you think about shaving one side of your head – cool or crazy? Like I said; as much as I love crazy styles, this may just be too crazy for my taste – only because I pity the grow-out time!

Reader A asked me this question recently and I thought it was perfect, because I’m the Queen of Split Ends.

What is the best way to get rid of all my split ends? And how can I prevent new split ends?

I remember the days back in highschool where I’d sit at the back of class and start trimming to pass time. I also started to do it to pass time when I couldn’t sleep (my goodness I’m weird) so I’d be lying in bed giving myself a trim.

I stopped with this obsession when one morning I woke up with a pair of scissors next to my face, because I had forgotten to put it away before sleeping. I vowed never to be so dumb again because cutting my face open and dying due to “obsession with split ends” kinda sucks. Anyway – on the the answer.

I’m sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but there is no solution other then cutting them off. When your hair has split into three sections (or 8, in my case), then it’s beyond repair – hair can’t stick back together, so it’s best you just snip it off to prevent more splitting.

Also, prevention is better than cure – so to prevent split ends, here are some ideas:

  • Before blow-drying, flat ironing or curling your hair, remember to use a heat protective spray beforehand. Also, try to keep heat styling tools to a minimum as much as you can and avoid using the highest heat level – they do unbelievable damage to your hair in the long run.
  • Apply a deep conditioning mask at least once a week to keep hair soft so your ends won’t split as easily. You can read how to do a deep conditioning mask at home at my post, How to: Deep Conditioning Hair Mask.
  • Get regular trims to keep your hair looking healthy and free of split ends. If you’re trying to grow your hair out, just get 1/4 of an inch trims each time, something called “dusting” – basically, an extremely short trim to keep your hair still looking great!

So to summarize: split ends can only be cut off, so it’s really better to take care of your hair and get regular trims. Sad but true. :( What do you do to prevent split ends? Do you get them a lot?

“Can great skin be created? Yes.”

That’s Clinique tagline for their insanely popular skincare line, Clinique 3 Step Skincare System. And with the very attract “Just 3 steps, 3 minutes, twice a day” slogan, it’s no wonder this skincare line has become so popular – and it’s my time to join in the praise for this line!

I began using the Clinique 3 Step Skincare reason when I was just turning 18 – I believe it was the summer before I turned 18 (I’m a September baby!).

To put it briefly, I had received a sample of their Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion (DDML) on holiday and was too paranoid that it would make me breakout (I still was dealing with zits at that age), so I used it on my hands instead.

(Side note: That’s what I recommend – if you feel a cream isn’t good enough or didn’t work for your face, use it as hand cream!)

Anyway. It was only then I saw how insanely soft my hands felt, that when I got home, I bought a full bottle immediately. While I was at the counter, I remembered that I had heard how famous and good their 3 Step Skin care system was, so I decided to try it out too. I had tried every possible brand to try to get my skin better in the past, trying another brand possibly hurt, right?

Thank goodness I took that chance!

I was a little hesitant at first, though. This was the first “high end” skincare I was going to use, and I really hoped it worked; for that price, it had to! I took their skin type test (I was Type II) and bought the Facial Liquid Soap in Mild, Clarifying Lotion in 2, and their Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion.

I used it for 2 weeks before I noticed my skin had calmed down a bit, and before I knew it, I was smitten. After a full 6 weeks, I realized that my skin was free of blemishes. I was overjoyed!

happiness-bad-day

Not to start the year off on a bad note, but damn December was ridiculous for me.

I had so much stuff going on with college, I had 25 (!!!) compulsory driving lessons, and the stress of dinner parties, people leaving (one of my best friends is going to the US for 8 years!), and countless essay assignments left me having three bouts of illnesses: first, a full blow fever, second a stomach flu straight from hell that went well into Xmas, and then a sinus infection.

The icing on the cake is when I got an infection from the blood test I took, leaving me in a lot of pain and in an arm cast and sling! Not. Fun.

However, lying in bed feeling sorry for myself just didn’t cut it, so I wrote this list on a piece of paper while in bed next to my puke bucket (how’s that for a pretty picture?!) for all of us who may be having a bad day. I tried some of this out myself and they really do work to lift up your mood.

I was a bit hesitant to post this because I don’t like to judge anyone – however, I think it should be brought up, because 1) I can’t believe it made the front cover of People, almost implying it should be celebrated, and 2) what are young girls who watch MTV (or whatever show she is on) think?

Jezebel writes:

On November 20, 2009 Heidi Montag spent 10 hours getting a series of cosmetic surgery procedures, including increasing her breast implants to a DDD, getting “sexy ears”, and arching her brow, which Dr. Frank Ryan, her plastic surgeon, admits “isn’t commonly done” to 23-year-olds. In the accompanying 7-page interview, Heidi explains that she wanted to get the operations because her dream is to become a pop star and “it’s a superficial industry.”

Though People asking, “has she gone too far?” on the cover, suggests that there’s some kind of discussion about the dangers of plastic surgery in the magazine, Heidi is basically allowed to spew comments about how surgery was the answer to all of her body image issues. Even magazines like In Touch and Life & Style will usually consult with a “doctor who doesn’t treat the star” and tack on several paragraphs cautioning against becoming addicted to altering your appearance.

People only cites two doctors in its piece. Dr. Ryan justifies operating on Heidi, saying, “She’s doing what every other celebrity does… They just don’t talk about it.” The second doctor gets in six words in a sidebar on the last page. In the only challenge to Heidi advocating going under the knife, the magazine points out that about 5 to 10 percent of people who get cosmetic surgery have body dysmorphic disorder, a condition in which people look normal, “‘but they see a distorted image,’ says Jamie Feusner M.D., a psychiatrist who heads UCLA’s BDD Research Program.”

Yesterday actress Emmy Rossum Tweeted about Heidi’s cover,

It upsets me to see young women in the spotlight advocating plastic surgery. ANY surgery is extremely dangerous&should not be taken lightly, ..much less, used as a tool to increase notoriety or popularity… By putting this on magazine covers, we are somehow legitimizing the dangerous lengths to which some will go for fame and “beauty”

Judging from the public reaction to the songs Heidi has already released, it seems unlikely that her new appearance will catapult her to pop music stardom. However as Rossum points out, the surgery has already allowed her to increase her notoriety by appearing on the cover of People, while just recently she had a hard time getting on the cover of one of the far less legitimate celebrity weeklies.

Heidi already wants another procedure to make her breasts even bigger because when she posed for Playboy, “I didn’t fill out one of the bras and they had to Photoshop my boobs bigger and it was disheartening.” She says this is just the beginning of what she wants to have done and, “I plan to keep using surgery to make me as perfect as I can be.”

Here’s the 10 procedures Heidi underwent (and her husband Spencer Pratt allowed):

  • nose job revision,
  • chin reduction,
  • mini brow lift,
  • botox in forehead and frown area,
  • fat injections in cheeks, nasolabial folds and lips,
  • neck liposuction,
  • ears pinned back,
  • liposuction on waist, hips and inner and outer thighs,
  • buttock augmentation
  • breast augmentation revision.

P.S. In case you didn’t catch that, she’s only TWENTY-THREE years old.

Her reason for all this, she told People, is “to feel perfect.” I have no words, though I feel sorry for her. She seems to have some serious body image and self-esteem issues. :( I feel very sad that Hollywood does this to young women, as this issue also prompted a previous post, Is Hollywood Pushing the Standards of Beauty Too Far?

… I guess we really have our answer. Any thoughts?
