in Hair,How To/Tips

Hair expert and owner of Antonio Prieto Salon, Antonio Prieto shares with us his natural home remedies for all your hair woes. The best part is, you probably already have all this in your grocery bag!

Here are Antonio’s tips:

Oily hair.

  • Boil two tablespoons of mint in 1 1/5 glass of water for 20 minutes.
  • Strain the mixture and mix it with your regular shampoo.
  • Using the mint mixture on alternative days absorbs the excess oil in your hair.

Dry and damaged hair.

  • Apply a paste of egg yolk and water.
  • Leave it in for 10-15 minutes.
  • Rinse off with cold water.

Frizzy hair.

  • To tame uncontrollable frizz, try rubbing coconut oil into your hands and apply sparingly into your hair.
  • I wrote more about coconut oil and my experience with it here if you’re interested!

Build-up in your hair.

  • Massage a small amount of olive oil into your roots of dry hair before shampooing. Olive oil is also great for helping coarse hair.
  • Apply from the mid-lengths to the ends of your hair for great control and moisture!

Dull and boring hair.

  • Rinse your hair with lemon juice to bring life and shine back into your hair.
  • However, it is not recommended for color-treated hair, so use a cold water rinse after shampooing to contract the hair cuticles for a great shine!

A tip for all:

A healthy diet consisting of vegetables, fruits, buts, grains and plenty of water is the best way to achieve healthy hair! Remember you are replenishing from inside out! Also, you can read my post on Shampoo Myths and Facts on how to further take care of your hair.

Has anyone tried any natural remedies, or have your own to share? I’d love to hear about any crazy remedies you all might have! :-)

When your using the remedy for dry/damaged hair and putting egg yolk in your hair you can use the egg white to tighten pores! Now no more waste! I used to put egg white on my face every week or so and now after reading this article I can make use of the yolk as well! :-)

All five? :-( You should put powder on your roots to soak up extra oil inbetween washes – really helps oily roots!

Help!!! Have a 12 year niece that refuses to let go of the hair dryer, she has completely dried out her hair to the point of brittle, frizzy, split ends, and dead hair. Have bought Nioxon to coax her to using it but still refuses to STOP blow drying and straightening her hair!!! I have taken her styling tools away but still gets her hands on them, If I showed her emails of information, hair damaged picture’s, and home remedies from peer’s or parents of teenagers with same problem’s, I think that will help pry the heat damaging product’s from her palms. Please the only possible way we can fix it is either shaving it off an starting over, or the nioxon treatment! but she won’t listen to me

Hmm… you could tell her that if she doesn’t stop, the split ends will split further and further up her hair, until it all snaps off one day and she will have less than an inch of hair left.

My hairdresser said once there was someone who had so much damage she had to shave all her hair off – it was beyond repair.

That might scare your niece a bit?! :P

Hopefully she stops, and then my advice would be to get a long needed haircut and cut off all those split ends, lay off any type of chemical or heating device for 6 months, and do a hair mask three times a week.

I hope I helped Krissy!

I tend to get an itchy scalp sometimes for no reaason that I can fathom. The best things to sooth it are tea tree shampoos and rinsing it in apple cider vinegar. Don’t know whether you’d find that understandable but I thought it was pretty weird! It works well though.

Wow, I have never heard of apple cider vinegar, though it sounds very damaging!? Where did you hear about this, Meg? I’m very curious, since you say it works!

My mum actually told me about it. Not sure where she heard of the idea, but probably through one of her friends or on the internet. It actually smells nice too.
