This is Part 6 (and final) of Make up 101, a series of posts for beginners on how to apply makeup. You can read the rest of the series here.

Here’s a short tutorial for beginners on what is probably the most loved makeup product – mascara!
Mascara is used to build on your own eyelashes, creating thick, long, dark lashes – because apparently society says it’s sexy. Well I agree! Ha
Application:
- Not too necessary but helps a great deal – curl your eyelashes first. Put the eyelash curler on the roots of your mascara, hold for 10 seconds and release!
- Hold the mascara wand on top of your lashes, at the roots. Hold down and swipe a load of product on your lashes, root to tip, going over to spread the product smoothly.
- Do the same thing for under your eyelashes, working the wand into your roots to the tips. Wiggle the mascara wand in a zig-zag motion to get to all our lashes and to build even more volume. Put as many coats as you want, focusing on ‘lifting’ your eyelashes up.
- Optional – apply mascara to your bottom eyelashes. There are no real techniques here, other than just apply it from root to tip, loading product on, but making sure it goes on smoothly.
Tip: To avoid clumps, wipe your mascara wand with a tissue paper so the product goes on less, and thus more smoothy. Also, you can use a eyelash comb afterwards to get rid of clumps.
Recommended Products:
Lancôme Virtuôse Mascara - My favorite so far, ever! It lengthens, thickens and curls your lashes, so it really is an all in one product. Read my review (or love letter) to it here.
Maybelline Great Lash - The very famous pink and green tube, this has been around for over 25 years. Cheap and good, great for those starting out. Maybelline is pretty famous for their great, affordable mascaras. Read my review on it here.
Clinique Lash Power Curling Mascara – One of my current favorites. It is a great mascara that beginners will find easy to use because of its small wand. Read my review on it here.
The Body Shop Divide and Multiply - a great one for a natural look, for those who prefer the new plastic comb wands. Read my review here.

Yay! My favorite beauty product: MASCARA. =P
One more tip: You know how you’ll always get a gloop of mascara at the tip of your wand everytime you remove the wand out of the tube. Remember to wipe that off lightly on a piece of tissue, cause that might deposit too much product on your lashes and cause them to clump. =)

Thanks for your added tips! I think I should start using a mascara brush; ’cause I tend to over apply and most of the times it looks very clumpy – I like to put a lot of coats, muahaha!

Have you ever tried false eyelashes, or eyelash extensions? Or those crazy miracle eyelash growth serums (not sure they work, though). There are plenty of crazy eyelash alternatives if you can’t wear mascara
