This is Part 2 of Make up 101, a series of posts for beginners on how to apply makeup. You can read the rest of the series here.
Blush is used to mimic our skin’s natural flush we get, making our complexion look radiant. I never saw the need for blush but I realize now that it really makes a big difference in your whole ‘aura’.

Application:
- Apply your foundation. (If you don’t wear it, skip that bit! Just be sure to moisturize your skin first.)
- Tap your blush brush (if you’re using powder blush) or your fingers (if it’s cream or gel blush). Smile. You see that fleshy bit of skin? Those are called the ‘apples of your cheeks’. With your powder brush, swirl it over that area in a circular motion, making sure it blends in nicely.
- For your cream or gel blush, pat the color outward and upward on your cheeks. Empathies on the ‘patting’ motion, and remember to press it gently on your skin so the product stays.
This will take a while to master. I personally only started wearing blush a few months ago, so I’m still learning as well! If you’re still new at blush, just remember to keep the colors light and your application gentle, so that not too much product goes on your face and you end up looking like a clown! After some practice you will get it, promise. My post, Applying Blush According to Your Face Shape, may be of interest as well.
In case you overloaded on blush, apply a layer of loose powder on top of the blush to soften the color.
Recommended Products:
M.A.C. blushes – I’ve tried their bronzers and is the first blush I bought, earlier this year. They have a lot of colors to choose from and they last!
NARS Orgasm/Super Orgasm – A universally flattering (and not to mention its cult status) peach-pink, it’s a great blush. You can read my review and view swatches on my post, here.

I don’t use peachy blushes much but Super Orgasm really is pretty!
I think Mac blushers are excellent. Right now, I’m using a Dior one with tiny sparkles (they are far from disco sparkles and give a brighter appearance. Very trendy in Tokyo, where I live), but will prob revert to Mac once it’s done — it’s cheaper actually.
I’m such a blush junkie. I can do without foundation, mascara, but not without blush. Such a pick me up on my bad days
I’ve been using blushes all my life but I still can’t get e hang of it too..
Thanks for sharing this…
thanks for writing this and the links are real helpful too
Love the blushing beauties photos you added. Blush is an amazing product, really does make a different to the whole aura of the face. Granted you pick a suituable colour, or else you’ll look like a right clown!
I agree with you all – blush is important!
Thanks for all your comments

Thank you, Zonas!
Oh great. this is fab. Thanks for the extra links, never got blush right but it really is important to the face, also to contour large faces like mine lol.
I love blushers too. I’ve been really impressed with Erth Minerals blushers. They have just enough sparkle for day or night wear.
hi beauty fool,
which fashion show is the pic from ? the one where you have: how to apply blush?
Hey Kaye, thanks for your comment. I am so sorry but I really can’t remember, I wrote this post so long ago! (And I have terrible memory). I did get the images from Style.com, if that helps … so sorry!
Nars orgasm is AMAZING! No joke. It’s not overly peachy – it’s simply flattering. The price tag is a little steep so definitely try it out at the counter first
Ah, you read my mind! I recently bought it overseas (not available where I am) so I’m very excited – I agree with what you said! Look out for a review on it soon. I do find the price steep as well but it is so pigmented and quite a large pan so it will last a very long time, so I think it’s worth the price
