Just as commercials make you want to run out and grab the product it’s selling, commercials can also put you off. In Asciene’s case, it was its cheesy commercials that I had to laugh at.
I remember watching a commercial for Asience, where a statuesque Asian woman would continuously flick her long (of course, lovely) hair back and fourth. Flick-flickety-flick. Then, as she turned around, an old man whispered, “Show the world your beautiful hair”, or something equally over the top for a hair commercial. Me, being a rude consumer lazing on the couch (admit it, you too have given attitude to the TV!) I rolled my eyes.
However, it was my Mom who approached me and told me I should try out the new shampoo she’s been using (Asience’s Shine Therapy Shampoo) because it was “amazing” for her permed hair. I did notice her hair was looking more “calm” and when I felt it, it felt pretty damn soft for permed hair! (Anyone who has had a perm knows it’s frizz central and feels like straw.)
So, I nicked her shampoo and tried it out … and fell in love. I loved it so much I bought a bottle for myself, bought the conditioner; and loved that so much a week later I bought Essence Lotion, their leave in conditioner.
Believe me when they say that my hair feels like it’s brand new. Sure, the shampoo smells like a mixture of vomit/beer/perm solution (very pungent, took me awhile to get used to it), but the products are fantastic. Best of all, it’s a drugstore brand – which means it is ridiculously affordable.
For my readers who are not in Asia – they sell Asience online at Sasa and Amazon!

One thing to ignore is the fact that they say their products are made specifically for Asian hair. I asked my hairdresser and apparently I have Caucasian hair (is there really a difference, though; hair is hair, right?), but it works wonderfully on me. The shampoo gives so much strength and shine to my hair, the conditioner makes my hair sooo soft and smooth, and the leave in treatment – my favorite, as I obsessively reapply several times a day – has really transformed my hair back to when I was a kid and there was no damage. The label reads, “back to virgin hair” and I truly believe it.
Ladies – not to sound like pushy salesman but I love, love, love this range. If your hair is in dire need of reconstruction, I would recommend the Shine Therapy Range (made for permed/dry/seriously damaged hair). They are such great products – the cheesy commercial may just be right, after all.
Has anyone tried any products from Asience? What do you think about them? I’d probably try all their products eventually, they have two other ranges: Moisture Balance and Deep Nourish – will review as soon as I try them.

I always thought shampoo was just shampoo LOL. I do tons of stuff to my face and neck, but I wash my hair with anything my sisters use

Aww, it probably is, but this is really good! You’re lucky then, bah my hair is so damaged so it needs all the help it can get
I’ve never tried this brand, but a quick look at the product shows that it contains camellia oil, which is my favorite hair “secret”. I’ve got no doubt that it’s as wonderful as you claim because camellia oil is pure awesomeness.

Ooh you know all the secrets! Why is camellia oil your hair secret? (is it better than coconut oil, ’cause to me it’s reeeally amazing!) Tell me more about camellia oil?
Sorry, I just saw this comment!
http://www.naturaljapanesebeauty.com/njb.page12.html has some great information. I’m trying to find the forum thread where I first learned about it, but it was from several years ago and it might not be there anymore. If I do come across it I’ll post it here.

Hey Amanda!
Thanks so much, I actually went to your site and searched it… I know you sent a link to eBay but I’ve been banned for life there so I can’t buy it LOL. I’m really interested in this, though. Will do my research, there’s tons of Japanese beauty houses here so I can just ask around. Since it’s in this shampoo and I love, it, it really doesn sound amazing! I read you can use it for your skin, too! Do you only use it for your skin as well?
Hey Renee, I have used this product before when I was in Singapore and it was really quite good, left my hair really soft but the smell was really pungent cos it had some chinese herb in it.. but i realised that it doesn’t smell weird once you have washed out your hair.. It actually smells quite pleasant.
I currently use head and shoulders and its so bad cos it makes my hair fall out.. but i hv no choice cos that is the only shamppo that doesn’t make my scalp itchy or become prone to dandruff . And my friend’s mum who is a beautician said that its actually one of the shampoo that is really too strong for the scalp. Its really annoying. cos i do not have a choice. Do you know of any good shampoos in Aussie or Spore
Hey Nish. Tell me about it – the smell is pretty awful, isn’t it?
CLEAR is a new brand for dandruff and it’s pretty good. I use dandruff shampoo sometimes because I love the “icy” feeling it gives the scalp – I find them really good at cleaning the scalp! Just like moisturizing dry skin and it’s flakes, you have to moisturize your scalp too, to prevent the flakes. You can try applying coconut oil to your hairline, I hear it is really great for dandruff!
Hmm… other good shampoos are L’Oreal, Redken, Vidal Sassoon, Sunsilk. I would advise against Pantene (so thick and coats your hair!) and Dove – I love Dove but I felt their hair stuff was kinda bad
Thanks Renee.. I should prob try CLEAR.. I recently bought Body Shop’s Olive Moisturising Shampoo.. (so cheap and smells yummy) Yet to try it.. have to see how it goes!
Ooh you will have to let me know! I have never tried any of the Body Shop’s hair products, so would love to know your thoughts
OH you’re missing out. You have to try the body shop grape seed oil serum.. smells great and keeps my hair looking shiny and soft. I usually wear it before I blow dry my hair. My make up counter is filled with stuff from body shop! anyway im a new reader to ur website! enjoying it! keep up the great work
I think I may! I don’t know why I’ve never tried their haircare (or skincare, or anything really!) I have just used their makeup and bodycare products in the past
And thanks so much, Nish. So glad to meet you and have you here! Hope to see you around more often
Hi Renee! I can’t say that my hair is damaged, although I’m always concerned about new split ends when they appear. My all time problem was when my hair begins to fall, more than it suppose too, but last year I finally found the right product. Some vials from Intragen that were amazing for my hair.

Oooh why did your hair start to fall?
I hate split ends too! I don’t know why I get them, I don’t use styling tools or anything with heat, but I get them and they are massive! Damn split ends
I’d love to hear more about this product, though!
Hey! I love asience too but there are like different types and i don’t know which to buy. I have dry hair but I don’t perm it or colour or anything so I was wondering if shine therapy would still work for me. And I feel that sunsilk drastically loses out to asience cause I used sunsilk last year and switched to asience
Hey Trish!
I can’t vouch for the other ranges but I would def recommend Shine Therapy. Which Asience product are you using now? Shine Therapy i’s made for dry/damaged hair, so I think it will still work for you – I think it was an added plus that it works for those with chemical treatments in their hair, it’s originally for dry/damaged hair. Either way, you can always try out and if you hate it you can always give it away and try another one – with products it’s all about trial and error I’m afraid, but I personally love the range and would recommend it. Luckily it’s quite an affordable range, so we don’t have to burn a hole in our pockets while testing it out.
Let me know what you end up getting and what you think!
P.S. I totally agree about Sunsilk! I tried it ages ago and was not impressed.
Ooh I see..
haha I’m using the inner rich one. And I found that the essence water really helps! You can see the difference just after one use!
Oh. But i bought like 2 of the inner rich shampoos and conditioners already. And they’re the BIG bottles haha.
Ok. I will remember to try it after I finish those Big bottles
I will recommend the Shine therapy to my mother. And YES!! They’re all trial and error so I get quite ticked off when the product is not good and makes my hair drier or makes me have a breakout for cleansers. I heard that the Laniege [is that how it's spelt?] brand of cleanser and the hyrdromask is really good. Haha yes I agree. But I heard that the favourite drugstore brand for hair is Pantene Pro v. But i dont like Pantene! I tried it before and it wasnt THAT good. It was like sunsilk.. However, I really really like Asience!! The inner rich one is quite good. It makes the hair free of tangles and smoother
