Happy Earth Day!
I’ve been trying to do my part for the Earth, and I urge you all to do the same! Also, this started a new interest in organic and natural beauty brands which led me start the new category here, Natural/Organic.
Here’s some small starting tips on how to be a green beauty:
1. Try Natural products
Makeup and skincare has come a long way – big department brands are starting to go green as well, so look out for that. Invest in certified organic products that help save our environment – those that are deprived from sustainable resources, made with recyclable packaging, comply with strict environmental standards, and are not tested on animals.
Some labels to look for:
- Organic: Grown and processed without chemicals.
- Vegan: Contains no animal products and is cruelty-free.
- Paraben-free: Contains no synthetic preservatives from these chemicals.
I have also written a post, How to Spot Natural Products, which talked about the seal that was introduced last year to make spotting natural products easier. More explanation on organic product seals can be found at Decoded: Organic Beauty by Allure.
2. Minimal, recyclable packaging
Look for products in recyclable containers such as glass, or cardboard. Also, once you’re finished with your products, send them off to a recycling collection near you. My place now has a big recycling bin that I’ve been using – so glad that they are trying to help out, too!
(M.A.C. lovers, I believe if you send back 6 empty product containers, they will give you a free lipstick as a thank you, and recycle your old products… Someone please confirm this for me?)
3. Banish face-wipes
Facial wipes are pretty much a God-sent for its convenience, but it takes hundreds of years for them to biodegrade! Invest in a great cleanser instead.
4. Shorter showers
Try to cut your shower time. Jennifer Aniston has famously said that she brushes her teeth in the shower to save water. I didn’t know this was supposedly weird, I’ve been doing this since I can remember! It’s pretty convenient too.
5. Bring your own!
If you’re going for a big makeup shopping spree (lucky you!) bring your own bag instead of using crazy amounts of plastic or paper bags. Also, try to stop buying disposable water bottles and buy your own reusable water bottle and bring your own water with you whenever you can. You wouldn’t believe the amount of these wasteful things are just thrown away everyday!
I really urge you guys to try to do your part – even if it’s a little change to your lifestyle, it makes a huge difference. If you have any other tips on being a green beauty – do add your comments! I’d love to hear.

M.A.C lover here! ~waves~ =D
Yes, you’re right. Bring 6 empty M.A.C containers back to M.A.C and they’ll give you a lipstick of your choice (except for Viva Glam ones) as a thank you token.
Nice work with the HTML. =P

Really natural products are very necessary for this segment but your recycling element is very interesting _____ will do it…
Thanks Shirly!
Hey Vicky, thanks for confirming. I have no idea how many YEARS it would take me to finish 6 whole containers… but a good thing they are doing, none the less
Airbrush – hope so!
Every little bit can help in a big way.
