How to Fake A Bob Hairstyle

July 3, 2008 · Print This Article

My poor seven year old self used to suffer every 6 months – my mother would take me to the hairdressers and she would cut the ugliest bob in all existence. I still look back at old photos and cringe! If only I knew that 12 years later, it would be in fashion!

The bob haircut first made its debut in the 1920s, and no one knew it would revolutionize the way women wear their hair forever. Today, ‘the bob’ haircut has been ushered back into the limelight by stars such as Rhianna, Victoria Beckham, Katie Holmes, and newly “bobbed” celebrity Hayden Panettiere and Anne Hathaway, which I love!

However, these celebrities are not actually snipping their hair off - many of the newly ‘bobbed’ celebs (not necessarily the ones listed above) are faking it. They are wearing wigs, extensions, and hairpieces, which allow them to have this fashionable cut only on the days they want it. That’s why one day they’re sporting the bob and the next day they are sporting mermaid locks. Now you can do the same! If your hair is long, go short in seconds without the commitment of a haircut with these tricks:

  • Jessica Simpson’s and her hairstylist Ken Paves hair extension line, HairDo has a 10″ Straight Clip-In Extension that recreates your back hair line to bring strands from long to short in a flash (your natural hair simply tucks under the extension). The 10″ extension sits on the shoulder for a sleek bob style. Available in 16 multi-tone shades.
  • Raquel Welch Sheer Indulgence Influence Wig. The “Influence” Raquel Welch wig hangs just below the chin and is suitable for oval, round, diamond and heart shaped faces. Its top adds parting versatility, so you can choose a center part one day and a side part the next. Available in 27 shades.

I don’t know how many of you would dare wear a wig, but I think the extensions sound like a good idea. Another way to fake a bob, if you have medium/long hair:

  1. Gather your hair in a low ponytail.
  2. Visualize how long you want your fake bob to be, pull your hair higher up for a shorter bob, lower for a longer one.
  3. Clip the rest of your hair towards your crown, so it is not seen from the front.
  4. Instant fake bob!

So go ahead and experiement! Maybe I should fake a bob it one day, for old times sake! :P

Hayden’s hair looks not so good here, its very fine and not great for her face shape.. The other images are fantastic examples of the bob haircut working successfully. :)

I had a bob a few times in my teens mainly because my hair is fine and my mother thought it suited me- she told me I looked more sophisticated. But in actual fact I am pretty sure it wouldnt suit me as i have a mixture between a heart and square face plus my hair is baby fine. Wherever the hair ends creates volume right so surely it wouldnt work? Anyways, I just had a perm done- more of a body wave actually, excellent perm no damage what so ever!

Got something to say?
