How to: Achieve Flawless Looking Skin

in Face,How To/Tips,Make Up

Sometimes, the occasion calls for a little bit more makeup than usual, which for some can include foundation. For example, I remember my mother and aunts would only bring out the foundation and red lipstick on special occasions, such as weddings or graduations.

flawless-skinThis post is just a tutorial on how to get flawless looking skin thanks to makeup, whether it’s for a special occasion, or everyday.

1. Moisturizer

Soft, supple skin will allow your makeup to go on smoother and ‘melt’ into the skin, rather than just sitting on top and looking every fake.

Apply your moisturizer, (I love this one by Clinique) gently on skin and massage your skin in circular motions so your skin becomes warm and let it soak in for about 1 minute.

2. Primer

Personally I haven’t tried primers yet but my friends all rave about it so much (and I’ve also read so much about it!) that I feel like I should include it here! Primers even out your skin texture so your makeup applies smoothly. It also helps keep moisture in your skin and make your foundation last longer.

If you do use primer, apply a dime size portion of it on your face and apply it lightly with your fingertips.

3. Foundation

Apply your foundation here – my post How to Apply Foundation may help if you need it! Find a foundation that you prefer, be it liquid, tinted moisturizer (I highly recomend this one, it’s fantastic), or powder foundation.

Apply your foundation with either a sponge, brush or fingertips, whichever you prefer – however, remember to blend until the makeup seems to disappear.

4. Concealer

  • Dark Eye Circles - A creamy concealer like Laura Mercier’s Secret Concealer blends easily into the skin, so I would recommend that! I find concealer sticks a little drying, but choose a concealer that works for you and apply it with a small brush over your dark eye circles, especially the inner corners – many women forget that area and that is where most of the color is! Try it – really makes a difference!
  • Blemishes - Zits, pimples, acne scars and other blemishes are better covered by thicker formulas like Boi-ing by Benefit. Pat it on your blemishes until the product has disappeared. My post How to Cover that Monster Zit can help.

5. Powder

Using a big fluffy brush, dip it into loose powder, swipe the excess on the back of your hand, and dust your face gently.

There we go! Do you have any other tips to add? If you have good skin I say skip the foundation and just cover what needs to be covered by concealer, and apply powder for a natural look. You really don’t need the extra coverage, you lucky thing!

I love my MAC concealer but I’d like to try something new because it always creases on me by the end of the day!

Oh, I’ve tried Laura Mercier, Clinique and Benefit and have liked them all! Clinique’s Derma white is in a stick form if you don’t like the creamer textures, and it’s one of my favorites!

I’m a makeup artist and I would just like to say how refreshing it is to find a beauty blog with logical information on it! These days beauty blogs are a dime a dozen and very few of them are actually giving out proper advice. Just a suggestion for anyone who is interested, I use Laura Mercier foundations and I love them! I always use them on set because they look flawless in photographs and in movies.

One step that you forgot though! Before concealer, use corrector to brighten the dull areas of the face and create a radiant glow (try under eyes, brow bones, bridge of nose and even under bottom lip). Corrector “brightens” and concealer “lightens”, so with the right application of both you should have a healthy brightness to your complexion in no time! I use Make Up For Ever corrector palettes on my clients.
