How Much is Too Much When It Comes to Makeup?

I saw this recent red carpet photo of Megan Fox on a fashion forum recently, and I thought – wow, what a great, vampy look!

However, tons of comments from the forum members (I’m not a member unfortunately but I stalk that place for celebrity makeup looks … mwahaha!) who all said that she wears way too much makeup.

A light bulb went off, and I immediately thought, blog post! So I was wondering, how much is too much for you? Personally, I think this look is great on Megan Fox and if you’re on a red carpet; but the dramatic lashes, smokey eyes, dark brows, deep lipstick and no (?) blush – all the contrasts could be way too much for some of us. My rule is that I follow the general idea – make the focus on either the eyes or lips, and you won’t go wrong!

I’d love to hear your thoughts on this! What kinda makeup looks do you think is just ‘too much’? Do you have any makeup ‘rules’ you apply too so you keep your makeup looking decent?

Hi, to be honest, for me even this is a little bit too much. Unless you are on a premiere of a vampire movie, I would hesitate to put a make-up like that. Although I love her hair – just changed my colour to black that’s why haha :-) A great example of a decent vampire is my beloved Elizabeth Reaser, she has a brilliant style and take a look at her curly hair style – I’ve been trying to reach curles like that for ages but no results.

Thanks a lot!

Cheers, El

Personally I think she doesn’t have too much makeup. Maybe lighter on the brows, but otherwise, she’s not even wearing noticeable blush. I think it’s the eyes that make it look too made-up. Still, the event should be taken into consideration. If you wear like full makeup to school in the AM that would be TOO MUCH, but to a party, I think it’s okay. I rarely wear a lot of makeup even for occasions. I just make sure it doesn’t wear off as easily if I have like a wedding or party to attend.

That`s actually a hard question, how much is too much? I think it all depends, on the time of day, the ocassion and the person! I think she looks great, cause I love that 1920s style, black eyeliner and red smashing lipstick, she looks very pretty, IMHO. But I don`t think anybody looks good with such a strong lip color, like me, for instance, I think I look hideous with red lipstick :P And, as Kaye said, it depends, that is a night make up only, and I agree with you focusing on either lips or eyes (which she did). Another good option is to try and look as if you dont have any makeup, thats always a safe choice :)

I don’t think it’s a question of how much, but what colors in this case. Her foundation does not match her skin and the deep berry lipstick doesn’t look good on her skin. I think if those two changed, she would be much better off.

I agree with Danielle about the lipstick. It doesn’t suit her, I think. I always obey the rule “focus on either your eyes or lips” because I look strange with lipstick. Even a light pink seem too obvious on me. I dunno why ^^
I think ‘too much’ when girls have too heavy or orangey or cakey foundation, or too much powder.

I think she looks fabulous! I do agree that a certain look should go with time of day and I always consider the season and weather. I personally see nothing wrong with her look, like the lip color but I would go lighter on the brows.

I think too much is made up eyes, heavily blushed up cheeks, cakey and orange foundation, and way too much lipstick. I basically stick to one look of makeup for school (foundation, blush, mascara, and tinted lip balm). Megan Fox’s eyes should be toned down a little, I think, and then it would be a great look.

i don’t think megan’s make up is too much because the colors complement each other, especially ‘coz she’s wearing black….maybe if she had blush on, it would be too much…but she’s carrying it very well!

Personally, I don’t think that she has too much makeup on. To me…”too much” is when someone’s foundation looks like an inch thick or over-powdered face.
I think she looks fab in that pic =D

Too much is when the emphasis is on both eyes and lips. Blue/green eyeshadow, black eyeliner on upper and lower lid, shimmery highlights just under the brow and very harsh drawn on eye brows, obvious lip liner top with red lipstick.!!!

honestly, i’m not a huge fan of dark lips. very few people can pull them off. i like a more natural look. megan looks awesome (as usual) in that pic, but i think she would have looked even better with a nude lip color.

Hey everyone! Wow – I am overwhelmed by your responses, thanks for all your input! :)

Just to be clear, this post wasn’t meant to bash Megan Fox in any way – far from it – that picture of her and the comments it received in the forum I read just sparked an idea to ask you all what you thought was ‘too much’ in terms of makeup. And I have to agree with the majority of you – my idea of ‘too much’ is also about foundation – when it’s caked on and looks like a mask! Poreless faces look a little scary, don’t they?

Also, I am sorry for the late reply to comments and emails, I have been having a fever since the night I posted this blog post, so I’ll be back to blogging/replying very soon :) Hope everyone has a great weekend! xx

I usually stick with the eyes or lips rule, too … but when you’re on the red carpet maybe all bets are off?

Too much would probably be when there is an excessive amount of eye makeup, particularly the eyebrows and eyeliner. Or when the cheek looks like a monkey’s bottom. I saw a sales assistant who wore yellow contact lens, and still had so much eye makeup that she scared me so much, I walked out of the shop.

“Cheek looks like a monkey’s bottom.” Man I love my readers. You guys are hilarious! :)

But hmm… yellow contacts? That’s a little creepy. I once saw a man with red contacts. When I first saw him I thought maybe he was a demon (LOL) but then I was like, oh right, there are such things as contacts :-P
