Have You Ever Drastically Changed Your Hair Color?

April 30, 2009   in Hair

The buzz around some beauty blogs this week is Kim Kardashian’s (whose makeup I love, by the way!) recent hair color change, from jet-black to a lighter brown. (You can see her “before” hair color here.)

Personally, I think she’s beautiful either way, but this got me thinking; has anyone ever changed their hair color drastically? I think Kim looks like a complete new person with this color change!

The most drastic change I have had is when I had a tragic bright orange color when I was in high school, thanks to a freak accident by an at-home color kit. I don’t know what happened, but the color was supposed to be light brown!

If there’s someone in my life who loves to try new colors, it’s my friend Christine. She’s a natural dark blonde, but in high school for a year she decided to get dark brown locks (we had the exact same color, so fun!). She then had bleached blonde hair, and just last Christmas, became a redhead! Recently though, she has gone back to a light brown color. I should ask her for photos, she’s had so many looks and I think they all suited her – lucky girl!

I haven’t dyed my hair since high school so I’m back to my natural dark brown color, which I love – I definitely think that natural suits me best.

What are some past hair colors you’ve tried? What’s your hair color now? I’d love to hear your hair-color stories! :)

I think Kim looks so much better before turning blonde. She looked more exotic and her features really stand out. Blonde makes her look a little ‘washed out’. My humble opinion. I dont colour my hair as I do love my natural jet black hair color!!!

Hey Elizabeth, I have to agree with you on that one. She looks great either way, but I prefer the darker hair personally. I just love dark hair :P

Hey Tessa, yeah bleach is probably the worse thing you can do to your hair in terms of damage. Or maybe it’s a tie with a perm. Glad to hear your hair is back to normal now :P

Oh Kim does look nice with the light hair, but I prefer her with darker hair. It seems more her and more exotic. I’ve been a bleached blonde and redhead before. I have brown hair naturally (a medium red brown).

Wow! You’ve had them all. And I do agree that Kim’s darker color made her look more exotic :)

hey :) I’m a jet black gal naturally but have dyed my hair a copper colour. That’s the most drastic, it is quite drastic though. In the sun I am bright blonde tho, how funny

love your blog as always :)

Hey! Yeah the sun bleaches the hair a little bit, I think. I have dark brown hair but in the sun it goes golden and sometimes I see red! Very strange.

And thanks so much Lesley :)

My hair’s always been dark brown, but I often dye it a warmer reddish brown color. I don’t know what this shade is called :) I’m thinking of going lighter, but then I’d look completely Korean, even when I’m not.

Hey Kaye! Do Korean women usually have a light brown color?

A lot of them dye their hair a lighter shade or brown, though the normal shade for Asians ranges from black to dark brown.

Oops. I realize how ignorant that question sounded. Of course I know what Asian’s natural hair colors are! Haha. What I meant was if it’s popular to dye your hair light brown there. Sorry about that!

A lot of Asian women like to colour their hair lighter. We are naturally very jet black and mostle pale, so sometimes it’s very drastic and pale’s us out, so we dye it lighter. I personally have been dying my jet black hair a reddish brown.

Wow purple streaks! My friend used to have that a few years ago too. Purple looks great with brown hair, I think :)

I love Kim K. Whether she is blonde, light brown, or her natural raven haired, she is beautiful to me.

Your friend is blonde and able to rock dark hair? Good for her!
I have dyed my hair blonde, red (think sports car red), pink, navy blue, dark brown, and light brown.
Best advice I can ever give: do not ever color your hair. You have the luxury of not having roots, enjoy it.
I’m a natural blonde, and even when I dyed my hair dark brown (disaster) when my roots came in, they were blonde, and it made my hair-part look huge and gaping.
I love my hair a lighter blonde during summer, but then when it grows out it looks awful and you have to re-dye it to your root color, or let it grow. (I chopped it all off)
Funky colors are only cool when you’re going through the “punk” stage or whatever. I dyed my tips red, and it was really cute because I wore my hair up and it was on just my ends, but the novelty faded quickly. I dyed the back of my hair navy blue (like how avril lavigne and everyone dyed their hair blonde and black underneath) and it was more unique but when I put my hair in a ponytail, people thought I shaved the back of my head (also it just faded to dark anyways). As for pink, well let’s just say it faded to brown, then I went to get my hair back to bright blonde and the pink came back. Literally, it faded to brown, and when added with bleach it turns coral pink (it was originally hot pink) out of nowhere.

Don’t dye your hair!! I have finally stopped for the first time in 10 years and I love my hair, it feels better, looks better, the works. And never box dye, I used to do that, and every time I’d then have to run to the hairdresser for some touch-ups anyways (may as well of paid her $200 right off the bat and saved myself the embarrassment).
