Do you match your makeup with your outfit?

February 23, 2010

in Make Up

It’s the number one makeup no no: matching your makeup with your outfit, especially matching your eyeshadow to your outfit. However, I can’t help but think your eye makeup colors matching your dress looks really, really nice when done properly. What do you think? It pulls the whole look together, no?

Jessica Alba sported this makeup “sin” at the premiere of her latest movie, Valentine’s Day, and I have to say I really like this look. (And that dress. I would kill for that dress and those shoes! Damn you Alba, why you so hot?) Instead of the makeup looking too matchy-matchy and over the top (the reason why it’s “forbidden” in the first place), I think it compliments her eye color perfectly as well. (Brown eyed beauties, take note – green looks amazing on you!)

I’ve done it before, with green as well – I did a khaki green smokey eye and I was wearing a green dress, and I didn’t think it looked too awful at all, so personally, I say this makeup no-no is a big yes-yes! in my book.

Let me know what you think – should we debunk this makeup myth that matching your makeup and your outfit is a sin? What do you think of this makeup “sin”? Do you coordinate your makeup and your outfit as well?

I don’t think i’ve ever intentionally matched my outfit and makeup but i’ve never really thought about it before. I think Jessica Alba looks great here. :)

She does, doesn’t she? I am so envious of her outfit here, it was perfect :)

You should try it out sometime and let me know how it goes :D

I don’t usually coordinate, I just stick to eyeshadows that complement my eyes. Sometimes my outfit will have red, or white, (and I don’t wear yellow but imagine people who do!), so I go with mostly neutrals in that case. I can’t imagine wearing eyeshadows with red tones in them!
I guess it could work if it’s subtle — I find coordinating the entire outfit in colors (shoes bag top and accessories, for example) is more of a “sin”!

I agree that the whole outfit of one color might be too much! I too mostly stick to eyeshadow colors that suit my eye color (brown!) and then the next thing in line for me is what I’m wearing. I usually just wear neutrals so I don’t think about it much, but once in awhile it’s nice to mix it up! :D

I do it all the time. First I do my makeup and then, based on the colors I used, I decide what to wear. I don’t care if the rules say it’s a no-no, I think it’s fun and looks pretty. Makeup can complement any look nicely.

Yes, makeup at the end of the day shouldn’t be taken so seriously, it’s all about having fun. :)

I think having a smokey eye with a hint of the colour looks great, as shown above :)

I totally agree with you, Sadhbh, I love smokey eyes in general, and the subtle color is great, like you said! I think that is what makes this look work for Jessica – imagine if it was a full green eye? It would be too much, I think – her makeup artist is a genius :D

Ooo…the big make-up no-no. =P
However, I am one of those people that tend to match my eyeshadow color to my outfit. I can say, 9 out of 10 times it worked out pretty okay. =D I won’t match the exact same color and shade of my outfit, but in a different shade. Say I’m wearing something purple. I’d go for a smoky plum eyeshadow, or some purple that’s of a different shade than my outfit (crease) with yellow on the lid. Or brown works for any outfit color. =P
Other than matching, I sometimes try to complement the colors.

Rule number 1 in makeup: There is no rule! =) No, seriously, you wear whatever makes you feel comfortable and whatever that looks right to you. No need to live up to others’ expectations. ;)

Hey Szeling, where have you been?! Long time no speak!

I like that you match it with a different shade of the same color, I think that will make it more subtle and less matchy-matchy.

And of course! Makeup is all about expressing yourself, so who cares if it’s a “sin” or not! :)

I’d say if the makeup color isn’t exactly the same color as the clothes, it can look great. I usually don’t match my makeup to my outfits, though. And you’re so right about green looking awesome on brown-eyed girls (love that song, btw, ha!). Green’s my fave color, so it’s great that it flatters my brown eyes!

Aw, yes, green is perfect! Khakis and olive and emerald greens are goooorgeous, I highly recommend it! I have to agree with you and SzeLing when you say a different shade will suit it better and make it less matchy-matchy! :)

i think matching makeup with outfits shouldn’t go wrong with dark and deep, shimmery shades. However matching them with matte and striking eyeshadows for example… blue and purple! Just isn’t quite the thing!

Haha totally! :D Everything done a little subtle is nicer, I think – anything that’s too in your face could look too wrong.

As long as it is done properly and not in a tacky manner, then there is no problem matching your makeup to your outfit. After all if it is good enough for Jessica Alba….!

I’m guilty of matching my makeup together with my outfits! If you play the colours well, I think it makes a perfect compliment to your overall look. ;)

I find you non-guilty, I love the look of it! If you know what you’re doing I think it’ll look great, after all makeup is another way of “dressing” yourself up, so it can totally match your outfit. :)

I match my makeup some of the time. It helps me wear purple/pink on my eyes if I’m wearing something of a similar tone. I think its a myth that needs debunking :)

i haven’t heard of matching makeup and outfit colors to be a no-no…and yes, i do it on myself too! i guess it really depends on whether it looks good on you or not…

however i don’t find jessica alba’s make up flattering on the photo above…seems like the foundation she used is not photography friendly…
