Consumer Reports is a reputable publication that is trusted by millions of consumers in the US, and for their January 2009 issue, they rated the best washable black mascaras in the market today, with Lancôme Définicils coming in at number one!
A panel of 34 staff members used 16 washable black mascaras over six weeks, then rated each on overall performance, ease of application, brush, look on lashes, durability, and ease of removal.
Top-rated was a department-store brand, Lancôme Définicils.
Several other very good mascaras that raters liked are sold in drugstores:
- Max Factor Lash Perfection Volume Couture,
- Maybelline Define-A-Lash Volume,
- Cover Girl VolumeExact,
- L’Oréal Telescopic Clean Definition & Lengthening.
And what were the lowest-rated mascaras?
Testers judged the lowest-rated mascaras, Bare Escentuals Big Tease and Revlon 3D Extreme, especially difficult to apply and remove, and they disliked their brushes. Spinlash, a battery-operated spinning wand, earned praise from a couple of panelists, but others said it left clumps.

Définicils has also ‘won’ the Allure Best of Beauty Hall of Fame, Reader Choice Award, and Glam Beauty Award. Nice! I haven’t tried Définicils yet, though I’ve used Virtuôse (review here!), Hypnôse and L’Extreme and have loved them all so I will have to check it out!
Does anyone agree with their choice? What about the lowest rated mascaras? I can agree with Revlon – I’ve always hated their weird mascara wands!

have you notieced that the other mascaras that were from the drugstores are the fairly new, plastic birstle mascara brushes? and i tots agree on revlon brushes, very clumpy and thick!!
Oh, that’s right! What do you think of them? I think I hate them but I’m not so sure, only tried two of them, haha
The one by Body Shop was surprisingly good though:

I think the other one I tried was ages ago by Max Factor, and it was so horrible I threw it out straight away.
Absolutely! When I started really wearing make-up, my mother would usually give me her Lancome “free gift w/purchase” fantastic sample sets. Definicils is (to me) indistinguishable from Hypnose – and they are both the best in my book. No clumping, flaking, or drying up quickly. Black as ink (tho my mama says that blondes should use brown, I do not
) Long lasting and fabulous length and volume. Tres Bien!
Hi Angel, thanks for your comment!
I also used those Lancome samples
My mom’s friend used to save them up for me. I really loved Hypnose as well, and I also liked L’extreme – at one point I would apply L’extreme and Hypnose together, so I got thickness and length
And I agree with you on black mascara! If you’re a blonde, the black mascara will contrast even more and make your eyes look much sexier
I think everyone should wear black mascara, regardless!
