What’s the Beauty Scene Like In…?

It’s with great pleasure I bring you another ‘What’s the beauty scene like in…?‘, a feature here on Beauty Fool that I hope to be a regular! (If you’d like me to feature you and your city, just email me.)

This time we have the very sweet Julie, a 21 year old American living in Finland to share her observations and to give us a little glimpse into the beauty world in Helsinki, Finland.

Hi there! How about a quick introduction about yourself?

I’m a 21-year-old American woman who moved to Finland 3.5 years ago to follow her dream. I had literally nothing to do after high school so I decided to go back to my roots and live in Finland as an au pair. Since that first year I’ve stayed in Finland, the place I truly want to be, and I still work in childcare, which I hope to do until I die. I in truth do not actually wear make-up as a personal choice, but all that energy gets spent on healing and bringing energy to my body :)

Tell us about your city.

Helsinki is the capital of and biggest city in Finland with just over half a million people. It lies on the Southern coast of Finland, about as far North as the base of Alaska. Helsinki’s a very international city, with immigrants and tourists from all over the world, as well as students and workers from the rest of Finland. One look tells you exactly where you are in the world – somewhat but not quite Russia, Scandinavia, or Europe, but with influences from all three. There are loads of parks and beaches, which is where people mostly spend their time. In the Winter, we have very little sunlight at all, so in the Summer, when the Sun sets around 23.30, helsinkiläiset (the people of Helsinki) are outside enjoying it for as long as possible.

So, what’s the beauty scene like in… Singapore? London? Paris? Berlin? Sydney? LA? Moscow? What do the women go gaga over? What are the top beauty trends? I want to know!

I’m so incredibly excited to launch this new collection of posts at Beauty Fool called ‘What’s the beauty Scene Like In…?‘.

As you can probably tell, it’s all about learning about others take on the ‘beauty scene’ where they live. I absolutely love traveling and learning about new cities and cultures, and I thought we could all take little trips around the world together… beauty trips, of course! (I’ll need your help though, so if you’d like me to feature your city, please email me.)

But until I get your amazing posts, I thought I’d start off this series about my home country (that’s a city and country in one!), Singapore! Enjoy…

Hi there! How about a quick introduction about yourself?

Well, you all know about me so I’ll skip this question! If you’re new and you don’t know who I am, just check out the About page.

Tell us about your city.

I’ve been told it’s a mix between LA and Tokyo, but I’ve been to neither so I don’t really know! Basically it’s an island city. It’s full of skyscrapers and buildings, but is a tiny, hot and tropical island. There’s a lot of Western influences since we were once colonized by the British but if you explore deeper into the country and its root, you’d see its Malay, Chinese, and Indian heritage. It’s incredibly clean and safe, so I really love my city. The only thing I don’t really like is the weather – crap it’s hot here! It’s so hot I actually refuse to go out in the day (unless it’s in a building with aircon). I much prefer going out in the evenings and night because it’s much cooler then (but still humid, sigh.)

From your perspective, what are some of your initial thoughts of the beauty scene in your city?

Since the population is mostly Chinese, there are a lot of influences from Japan and Korea. Whitening products are everywhere and there’s a real emphasize on porcelain, perfect skin care – there are countless facial spas and almost everyone I know go for regular facials. Pampering is really big here too, there are spas everywhere! Makeup wise, I see two extremes – there’s a lot of minimal, natural makeup looks but I also see a lot of bold eyeshadow, eyeliner and false eyelashes. It’s really a mix, I would say.
