Celebrity makeup artist Mary Burton created the beautiful look for Angelina Jolie and gave us an exclusive glimpse on how to recreate it. Angelina looked ravishing (as usual!) in a sparkling, silver Versace floor-length gown.
All products by Lancôme:
- Artliner in Noir
- Courbe Virtuôse Mascara in Black (Good choice! My fave.) and the vibrating Ôscillation Mascara in Black
- Color Design Blush in Model Mocha
- Juicy Tubes in Spring Fling
The result? Defined beautiful eyes, soft blush, and a pale pink, glossy pout for her famous lips!
I love this look. Simple and elegant. I am beginning to think she is one of my favorite beauty icons! Seems like her hair was her usual dark, romantic waves, that I wrote about some time ago. (Click here for my post to get the look!)
What do you think about her Golden Globes look?

The very first reader question! Let me hyperventilate.
OK done. Reader K writes:
Been looking around your site and it has some great beauty tips for general use. I am having a spring wedding though, and was wondering if you had any more bridal specific beauty tips?
Congratulations on your engagement! I am sure you’d want to look your best possible on your special day – not to mention, the wedding photos last a lifetime, so it’s vital to look your absolute best! I am nowhere near getting married so I don’t have any personal tips, however I can imagine, and plus I did some research online. :) Here’s what I found:
Hair and Make Up
- Keep the whole look classic and timeless. Don’t experiement with any new hair colors or haircuts right before your wedding, try it out at least one month before. Same for makeup – no trying on blue eyeshadow or some lipstick that flakes everywhere on your special day! Take photos of your makeup so you can access how you will look like in your wedding pictures!
Schedule your hair and makeup trial appointments about a week before the wedding – that way, if you do like it, the stylist can remember what they actually did! Trying on makeup and hairstyles months before the wedding is not such a good idea; 1) because you might change your mind, and 2) the stylist might not remember exactly how he/she did it.
- Have a test day for your whole ensemble. Sometimes, the hair can look beautiful – but when it’s with your dress it might look completely different and make the proportions look all wrong!
- This is a recommendation from a friend … she says Bobbi Brown has some of the best natural looking makeup, and Bobbi herself has always said your wedding day should just be a more beautiful version of yourself, and I couldn’t agree more! Opt for something natural and beautiful, like this picture from her Spring makeup collection above! Stunning.
Skin care
- Do not try any new skincare products closely to your wedding. If you can, go to a dermatolgist a month before so he/she can sort out any skin problems you might have. If it’s nothing serious, get a facial – but at least 2-4 weeks before the wedding, in case there are any reactions.
- Waxing should be done at least 4 days before your wedding day, in case you get irration or ingrown hairs.
- Two words for the big day (apart from I do of course!): BLOTTING PAPERS. Or a makeup artist lurking around somewhere. Blotting papers are quick touch ups that soak up any nasty sebum or mishaps that has happened with your makeup. Try getting powdered ones – it’s a more natural, light alternative to piling on lots of applications of powder throughout the day.
One last tip … waterproof mascara – for everyone in the family! :-P (And take some time to de-stress and relax through all that planning!)
Does any other brides, soon to be or not, have any other bridal beauty tips? And if anyone else have any beauty questions, I’d be happy to help out, just contact me.

Happy New Year! I hope everyone is having a great 2009 so far – I am very excited for the new year; and for whatever the future holds!
I can honestly say 2008 was a good year. I am so blessed and just have the most wonderful people around me. I am so happy I started Beauty Fool and all the great ladies I’ve met through my site :-)
Anyways … before I get too sappy, 2008 was a great year beauty-wise as well! I found lots of new products that have already become staples in my beauty routine and definite ‘it’ products for me.
In no particular order, here are my best beauty finds in 2008!:
- Redken Extreme Anti-Snap – I sang praises for it on my review of it here, but it really is great. While there are many leave in conditioners out there, I find Anti-Snap doesn’t weight the hair at all, and I can feel a difference in my hair within seconds. Also, the smell is just wonderful. It’s a little on the expensive side, but this lasts for quite a while so I find it is well worth it.
- Lancôme Virtuôse Mascara – I’ve always loved Lancome mascaras and this one is no different! One gripe I have about it is that once the tube starts to dry out a bit (after 2 months or so) the mascara is very dry and doesn’t have the glossy, true-black color it normally has when the product is new. Other reasons why I love it? Read my review!
- L’Oreal Elnett Satin Hairspray – This is by far a great beauty find. I wrote a post about it here, and how it is used by stylists all over the world – and I understand why. It is perfect, that’s all there is to say!
- Chanel La Ligne Professional Duo Eyeliner – This was a funny product I stumbled upon. It was my famous impulse buy of 2008, which turned out to be great. Wet or dry, this eyeliner can create a daytime, natural look, to dark, deep dramatic eyes. They just came out with a brown version of it, too.
- Bond No. 9 Chinatown Fragrance – I decided to add this one on the list purely because it was nothing I ever smelt before! It is very strange; but in a good way. My classmates were telling me how sexy it smelt, haha! You can read my review here.
What are some of your best beauty finds you found in 2008? I’d love to hear what everyone’s best finds were!

Since I’ve started this blog, friends and some of my mom’s friends (I guess she’s been promoting!) have been giving me some of their old makeup, samples they find … basically anything makeup! That, plus my crazy shopping and some random samples from everywhere, means I tripled my makeup collection since I’ve started Beauty Fool! This gave me an idea on posting how to organize and (hopefully!) simplify your crazy makeup collection.
1. Gather everything.
From your daily essentials, to that box of makeup you found in a closet (like me! I found a little makeup bag I used to use in high school. Four year old eyeliner, anyone?!) and lay them on the floor or any other big space.
2. Arrange by product type.
Put all your lip products together, eye makeup, foundations together, and so on.
3. Start the dumping!
Throw out anything that’s:
- more than 2.5-3 years old
- anything that has a funny or musty smell
- any liquids that have separated
- any brushes or sponges that are falling apart
- any powder colors that look dusty, old, or dull. They won’t look good!

I dragged my best friend to watch Twilight the other night, since she hadn’t seen it yet (it just came out here!). She is now in love with Robert Pattinson, and let’s be honest – he is the only reason that movie is as popular as it is! In other words, the same reason why I am writing this post – Beauty Fool needs some eye candy around here.
Personally, I was too dazzled (ha!) during the movie so I didn’t really notice any of the makeup looks they did, but here’s exactly what makeup artist Jeanne Van Phue used on the main characters:
Bella Swan/Kristen Stewart
- Shiseido Ultimate Sun Protection Cream SPF 55P+++
- SK-II Air Touch Foundation in OP-3
- M.A.C. Blot Powder/Pressed in Light
- Visiora Compact Powder in PC 103 as blush
- M.A.C. Eye Shadow in Blanc Type,
- M.A.C. Eye Shadow in Flute (Flute was a limited edition color and is no longer available; Girlie is an equivalent)
- M.A.C. Eye Shadow in Wedge
- Smashbox Limitless Lash Mascara in black waterproof
- Smashbox Lip & Lid Primer
- Benefit Silky Finish Lipstick in Good to Go (a plum/brown color)
Edward Cullen/Robert Pattinson
- Shiseido Ultimate Sun Protection Cream SPF 55P+++
- SK-II Air Touch Foundation in OP-1
- M.A.C. Blot Powder/Pressed in Light
- Benefit Silky Finish Lipstick in Ms. Behavin (a mulberry color)
- Noriko Cranberry Lip Balm
Have you seen Twilight? Do you love/hate it? I don’t really know what to think of it! But I thought the music was amazing, I have to get the soundtrack! (For what makeup was used in the saga, New Moon, check out my post Makeup Used in Twlight Saga, New Moon.)
This is Part 4 of Make up 101, a series of posts for beginners on how to apply makeup. You can read the rest of the series here.
Finally, eyeliner; my favorite makeup product! I ain’t no fool when it comes to eyeliner, it’s the first makeup I ever used! ;-)
The whole point of eyeliner started out with the eyelashes – eyeliner was made to make your eyelash line darker, thus creating the illusion that you have dark, thick eyelashes. There are many eyeliner ‘looks’ from smokey eyes to cat eyes, etc, but this is just a very basic eyeliner application.
Application:

- Prep eyelids with a swipe of your powder when you applied your foundation. This is especially useful if you have oily lids – it prevents your eyeshadow from disappearing.
- Place a finger on the outer corner of your eye and gently lift the skin up and out slightly, so that your eyelid is in full view. Try tilting your head back a bit so you can visualize your eyeliner line.
- Place your eyeliner as close to your las line as possible and draw soft strokes ’til the line looks straight. I normally start from the center of my eye outwards, then middle to the inner corners.
- For liner on the lower lash line, use your ring finger to lightly press the center your lower lash line. place your eyeliner tip on the outermost corner, drawing your liner inwards, as close to your lash line as possible.
Don’t worry if your lines aren’t straight. Sharp lines tend to make eyes look smaller so even if your eyeliner application isn’t too straight, use a Q-tip or your finger to gently smudge the liner.

Consumer Reports is a reputable publication that is trusted by millions of consumers in the US, and for their January 2009 issue, they rated the best washable black mascaras in the market today, with Lancôme Définicils coming in at number one!
A panel of 34 staff members used 16 washable black mascaras over six weeks, then rated each on overall performance, ease of application, brush, look on lashes, durability, and ease of removal.
Top-rated was a department-store brand, Lancôme Définicils.
Several other very good mascaras that raters liked are sold in drugstores:
- Max Factor Lash Perfection Volume Couture,
- Maybelline Define-A-Lash Volume,
- Cover Girl VolumeExact,
- L’Oréal Telescopic Clean Definition & Lengthening.
And what were the lowest-rated mascaras?
Testers judged the lowest-rated mascaras, Bare Escentuals Big Tease and Revlon 3D Extreme, especially difficult to apply and remove, and they disliked their brushes. Spinlash, a battery-operated spinning wand, earned praise from a couple of panelists, but others said it left clumps.
Read more here.
Définicils has also ‘won’ the Allure Best of Beauty Hall of Fame, Reader Choice Award, and Glam Beauty Award. Nice! I haven’t tried Définicils yet, though I’ve used Virtuôse (review here!), Hypnôse and L’Extreme and have loved them all so I will have to check it out!
Does anyone agree with their choice? What about the lowest rated mascaras? I can agree with Revlon – I’ve always hated their weird mascara wands!
