Lip

You know when you apply lipstick, and sometimes – especially when it’s a bright, bold color like red – the lines on your lips look more accentuated? Lipstick tends to cake into the lines, making it look “clumpy”, and before long you have little flakes of product on your lips. To make the lines on your lips less noticeable, here’s a simple tip you can try.

When applying your lipstick, instead of applying it across your lips horizontally, apply it vertically.

Doing this makes less product cake into the lines of your lips. Instead, it glides right on and doesn’t allow any product to be caught in between those lines.

I’ve tried this myself, especially with red lipstick and it does look more bold on! What do you think of this lipstick trick? Will you be trying this tip?

Trend to Try: Fuchsia Lips

February 17, 2010   in Lip, Make Up

What is my latest obsession, you ask? Fuchsia lips – the brighter the better, baby!

After sporting that weird mouth piece (that made a WOOOO sound) on New Year’s Eve, I remember staring at it and telling myself what a lovely, ‘loud’ pink it was and I would love a lipstick that color. (Is it weird that I got a lipstick color lemming after a mouth piece? Oh well.)

I did my research, and found some fuchsia lip color products:

  • MAC lipstick in “Girl About Town”
  • MAC lipstick in “Show Orchid”
  • Lancome’s Color Fever lipstick in “Rock Chic”
  • Urban Decay’s “Jilted”
  • Kat Von D “Backstage Bambi”

I love this bold, bright color. Paired with black eyeliner (though it’s still quite bright, so keep the eyes more subtle), nudish-pink cheeks (I’m guessing NARS Orgasm is the best), and sexy, volumized hair, this look screams rock-star glam.

What do you think of fuchsia lips? Would you dare to sport such a bold look? I think I might have to go down to my MAC counter an check their color out, but if you have any other products to recommend, please do!

angeline-jolie-lips

You know Angelina Jolie, always walking around with her pretty children and those ridiculous lips of hers? Well, there is exactly one makeup trick that separates a colored lip and a colored voluptuous lip – and it’s a simple, clear gloss. In fact, this beauty tip is so ridiculously easy I wish I had told you all sooner; I especially wanted to tell you now just in case anyone wanted to do a little extra to their lips this holiday and party season.

beauty-tip-pic

Here’s what to do: After applying your lipstick, take a clear lipgloss and dab a tiny amount of gloss to the center of your bottom lip … Seriously, that’s it. This gives the illusion that it is fuller, and leaves a full colored lip looking a bit ‘alive’ as opposed to flat and one-toned.

(Also, if you’d like a lipgloss recommendation, I love the Clinique’s Full Potential and Bare Escentuals’ Buxom Lips.)

Have you ever tried this tip? It really does make a subtle difference, don’t you think? I also doesn’t look like you have full lip gloss on, but gives a tiny bit of that extra va-va-voom.

sugar-lips

Do you remember those days as a kid, skipping down to local candy shop, spending your money (all $2 of it) on candy, and then feverishly spreading them all over your lips and making a big mess? …No? Was it just me then? :-P I remember as I kid I’d always buy those ‘magic dust’ candy or take anything with food coloring and spread it all over my lips as if it were lipstick.

beauty-tip-pic Well, those days of spreading sugar all over my lips may make actual sense today – I’ve read that a natural, gentle way to exfoliate lips is to make your very own sugar scrub.

All you have to do is mix some olive oil and some sugar together, pat it on your finger, and gently rub it against your lips. Exfoliating your lips once a week (or more, depending on your lips) gets rid of extra dead skin cells, flakes and reveals soft, smooth lips. It’s also great to exfoliate your lips before applying lipstick, as any flakes or extra bits will show through more with lipstick.

Do you exfoliate your lips? What methods do you use? I know there are many other methods than a sugar scrub as well, but this seems the most gentle, not to mention quick and easy – you can find these ingredients in your kitchen! :)

red-lips

I love red lips. I find them so powerful and plus, your lips looks amazing with such a bold, sexy color. Like the survey I wrote about a year ago, red lips can be naughty, nice, classy, feminine, and HOT! Here’s how to sport this sexy look yourself.

Choosing your perfect color

agyness-deyn-red-lipstickWhen choosing your perfect red color, you usually don’t pick one with your eyes closed and expect it to suit you! Red is a little more tricky than that. There are different tones of reds that suit different skin tones.

  • Fair skin – If your skin has cool pink undertones, colors that suit you are blue-based reds. If your fair skin has yellow undertones, try colors such as corals (my new obsession) and red colors that have orange and golden undertones.
  • Medium skin – Olive and golden skin tones suit brown based and orange based reds. Also, cranberry shades look great on you!
  • Dark skin – Deep, rich colors such as warm brick red and burgundy colors would suit your skin tone the best. Don’t try anything too bright, it may look too harsh.

Prep your lips

Red is a very bold color, so flakes and dry lips will look way more obvious with this color. What you can do is either apply a crazy amount of lip balm and taking a damp washcloth and gently rub the lip balm off your lips (this will remove flakes and dry bits in the process) or you can take a very soft wet baby toothbrush to gently exfoliate dead skin off. Whichever you are comfortable with! The toothbrush method can be harsh on the thin skin on the lips, so be very gentle.

Apply the color

Here’s my very first makeup tutorial. No laughing please! I only know two buttons on my camera so this is a big achievement. However, since it’s my first time if you have any tips on how to make it better or constructive criticism, please do tell me! :) I want to make future tutorials as simple yet helpful as possible.

bobbi-brown-tinted-lip-balm

If you’re looking for a great lip balm that also acts like makeup – aka, ‘gimme some color!’ – then I highly recommend this little gem from Bobbi Brown - it’s definitely one of the better balms I’ve tried!

Although I said this lip balm was the best lip balm I’ve tried (it still is), this one from Bobbi Brown is great for days you want a natural look with a hint of color. Allure named it a best buy in 2008, and while it’s a little on the expensive side, I feel it’s worth it. There is a great range of colors that look very natural and beautiful, is very moisturizing, and dare I say it even gives a plumping effect? Not to mention, this sleek packaging fits into your pocket and slimmest of wallets and purses.

Has anyone else tried this product? :-)

I‘m sure all I have to say is ‘Smith’s Rosebud Salve’ and everyone will start drooling!

I’ve been hearing about this brand for ages, and would always read how much celebrities loved them; finally I have tried it out.

Rosebud Brambleberry Rose Lip Balm is scented with the delicious aroma of freshly baked berry pie. The balm relieves dry, chapped lips and skin, leaving them soft, smooth, and great-smelling.

(I’m getting really lucky with my recent product choices aren’t I? First the amazing Clinique Power Lash, and now this!)

Unfortunately there were only two flavors available at the on the counter today; this and the menthol flavor, and I decided to get this one. Hopefully I will get my hands on the original one, because even though I love this balm; Brambleberry actually smells quite disgusting, haha. So I agree with everything above apart from the ‘great-smelling’ bit…

Another thing that I find not too great is the packaging, sometimes it’s hard to open.  But it doesn’t matter because I think this product is outstanding, there’s nothing really else to say - this lip balm is amazing. It isn’t sticky, goes on smooth and glossy, and hydrates dry lips wonderfully. It also looks amazing over lipstick, and gives a very dewy, wet look.

Sephora’s blog, Beauty and the Blog, wrote an interesting post about Target’s latest poll, which was all about red lipstick. (Good thing too, I wore my very first red lipstick on Halloween and now I’m obsessed! I was just planning to find the perfect red lip color to wear on New Year’s Eve.)

Red is a power color. Want an instant boost of confidence? Slick on something crimson.

Target found that more than 60 percent of women and men think that when a woman adds an extra punch of color to her beauty palette, she’s signaling that she feels fabulous about herself – and after all, added confidence is the ultimate accessory.

Additional Target poll findings:

  • Almost 40% of women who wear red lipstick do so to feel feminine, while 37% do it to feel sexy.
  • To dress up an outfit, 44% of women wear high heels and 61% get their hair done.
  • The majority of men and women polled (33%) named Angelina Jolie as the celebrity who has the most sought-after red lips. Duh!
  • 61% of respondents perceive wearing red on lips or nails as neither “naughty” or “nice” – showing that there are no stereotypes associated with this versatile shade.

I love the last point; personally, I think red lips can look sexy, naughty, nice, classy – everything! (If you’ve got the color and have no idea what to do, my post How to Apply Lipstick may help.)

Do you wear red lipstick? What occasions/places do you wear them too? What does it mean to you? So many questions!
