How To/Tips

I saw this outtake of a Maybelline ad featuring stunning model Emily DiDonato (whose hair I once raved about, and still love), and gasped. The look screams “flirty, pretty and romantic”. It inspired me to do a how-to look for this look – and with Valentine’s day around the corner, how perfect would this look be?

Now it might look very natural, but as we all know, “natural” looking makeup sometimes take the most time to do and just as many, if not more products. Still, this is a pretty simple look: there’s no heavy colors or dramatic hues. Instead, the look is soft and fresh – I love it!

  • Hair

Hair is soft and feminine with this look, just like the picture on the right. Start off by washing and conditioning hair. Next, blow-dry your hair for some volume (more tips on how to get volume here) and then grab a curling iron, or hair rollers.

Whatever your hair length, try some rollers or a curling iron to add some soft, romantic waves (ala this look on Angelina Jolie). After curling your hair, run your fingers through it to separate your curls, and then set with hairspray.

  • Makeup

First and foremost, keep skin clean and matte. Cleanse your skin and load up with moisturizer. Next, apply your foundation, concealer on your under eye circles and blemishes, and then apply a loose powder to set it all.

For your cheeks, apply a soft pink blush on. If you have a luminating/highlight powder, sweep some on top of your cheekbones and decollage for a sexy shimmer.

The eyes are the main focus of this look, so frame those beautiful things with your natural brow shape. Shape your brows the way they are, making sure they aren’t too thin. If they are too thin, fill them in with powder or another brow product of your choice.

Next, keep your eye makeup simple. Apply a wash of shimmer eyeshadow in soft colors such as pinks, peaches or lilacs, whatever you like best. Go easy on the eyeliner (brown instead of black, and only a thin line on your top lash line) because this look is all about the eyelashes. Curl your lashes, apply mascara, and apply clusters of individual false eyelashes (how to apply false eyelashes, here).

Lastly: your lips, the icing of the cake! As you can tell, this lip look is juicy, bright and fresh – obviously to make your date drooling at the thought of kissing you. Apply lip balm, then lipstick and then lipgloss. I have to say, the best colors for this look is candy colors: all shades of pinks. The brighter and cuter, the better!

  • Fragrance

A flirty scent is a must! I’ve listed some of my favorites here, but some other romantic, feminine floral scents I’ve tried recently are Ralph Lauren’s Romance Always Yours, YSL’s Parisenne, and Jessica Simpson’s Fancy. (And while we’re on the topic of fragrance, here’s my tip on making your scent last longer.)

  • Nails

I’d actually recommend going dark on your nails – it gives your fresh and girly makeup an edge, but if you’re not into that, keep the look going on to your nails with nudes and pastel colors. A soft pastel pink or baby blue would look really cute! If you want to go dark though, you can check out my post: How to: Dark, Glossy Black Nails.

I hope I inspired some candy-colored, soft pretty makeup looks this Valentine’s Day! However, I’d still love to know – do you have any special makeup looks planned? Or is Valentine’s Day just another day for you? Do let me know! … I guess you all can guess what makeup look I’ll do this Valentine’s? :)

Perhaps one of the most popular new year resolution is that this is the year you will ‘get healthy.’

Anyone who knows me will know that I am not one of those people – although I’ve always hated the ‘bad stuff’, aka sodas, alcohol (very bad) and smoking (even worse), my diet isn’t the best. Not to fear though – I’ve been slowly changing my diet late last year, and this year I’m going to really enforce it.

With that being said, I have a confession to make: I love junk food.

And even though I consider myself pretty fit and health– oh, who am I kidding? A happening night for me includes Ben & Jerry’s ice cream, rainbow sprinkled donuts, and Swedish candy. And don’t get me started on those sneaky 4am calls to McDonald’s delivery WHICH I KNOW NOTHING ABOUT. Right. Moving on…

But 2010 is a new year, and I told myself to learn how to stop the junk food cravings and start eating healthy. So far in the last months of 2009 and this January I’ve been pretty good and taking everything in moderation (I wouldn’t say ban junk food forever – life is too short; just don’t overdo it), so I’ve decided to share some of my tried-and-tested tips. Let’s call this my beginner’s guide on how to getting healthy for the junk-food loving, channel-surfing, lazy bum like me:

  • Take daily vitamins tablets.

The first thing you can do it to take a daily multi-vitamin tablet. I know there are some squabbles over whether or not vitamin pills are necessary or even good for you, but it really can’t hurt. I personally think they are great and have started taking one every morning, and will add a few others soon. The famous Dr. Oz takes a multivitamin for Vitamins A-E, Omega 3, and Calcuim pills. I think he’s knows what he’s talking about, so I’d recommend we all do the same!

  • Try out every fruit and vegetable possible and find your favorite.

The #1 thing you can do that benefits your health is to change your diet. Incorporate more fruits and vegetables. As my Mom likes to say, “eat like Adam and Eve did”, meaning all fruits and vegetables. However, this is the hardest thing for me. As someone who despises vegetables, this was quite a difficult task: I forced myself to try a lot of them to see if I liked any. And guess what? I found out I like broccoli, spinach, cauliflower, asparagus, mushrooms and a few others. Who knew? Do the same for fruits too. Try as much as you can and then collect your favorites and make it a point to eat at least a few of each – fruit and vegetable – each day. DO IT!

  • When eating your meal, eat the ‘healthy’ stuff first.

I’m sure you’ve heard of the diet tip that you should eat a salad before your meal, so you eat less of the main meal? Forget that – salads still gross me out. Instead, when eating your meal, eat the healthier stuff first. That means start with the vegetables, next to the protein, etc. I found this worked for me because normally I’d gobble the carbs right down, and would be too full to touch the healthy stuff. if you’re like me, swap the routine!

I go back to Denmark almost every Spring (I’m half Danish), and that is a loong 14 hours flight to and fro. As a kid I’d just wear my pajamas and slather on some hotel body lotion all over my face (don’t ever do that, by the way, unless you want serious breakouts) and head to the airport, not caring how disastrous I look. (Isn’t it great being a kid?!)

Now that I’m older, though, I have to look somewhat more presentable, and heading to the hotel and sleeping for 12 hours after the flight is not an option anymore! Here are some beauty tips I’ve gathered over the years, especially if you have business to do after your flight:

  • Before boarding

Moisturizing is key. With the dry, stuffy cabin air, skin can itch and worst of all, peel. First and foremost, moisturize your bare face before boarding a flight (I think it should be common sense that you’re not wearing makeup on a long flight, right?). What I like to do is double moisturize – that’s two layers of moisture on the face, and normally that is enough for the next 12 hours.

Next, while getting dressed for your flight, remember to moisturize your body as well. Moisturize your legs, collarbone, neck, and arms before flight. Soothing (and very thick) body lotions such as the famous body butters by The Body Shop can aid to calm and relax before your flight.

… Speaking of relaxing, I like relaxing on the plane now-a-days. In the past I used to sit in fear for 14 hours wondering when the plane was going to crash and I died, but now flights are relaxing. Soothing scents always work best: try spirizing on a lavender or vanilla scent to help calm you down. Close your eyes, breathe in the beautiful scent, and relax.

  • On Board

While on the plane, it’s also important to maintain moisturized skin. Of course, our first concern is the skin on our face! It’s vital to up the hydration on the flight. There are many facial moisturizer sprays availble today that you can use to freshen up your face. The most popular one is Moisture Surge Face Spray by Clinique, which is AMAZING. My friend C and I are obsessed about it.

I would also recommend bringing a mini body lotion in your handbag. Hands get insanely dry and so do your legs, which make them dry and itchy, and have this very attractive scale-like appearance. Load up on lotion now and again to banish scally looking skin when you get off the plane!

Next is definitey your lips. Our lips’ skin is very thin and delicate, and is one of the fastest to dry up and can get very, very dry and cracked in the cabin air. I can vouch that my lips get extremely chapped while in the air! It’s best to skip the lipgloss and lipsticks right now and instead go for a moisturizing lip balm. I recommend anything by Rosebud, I currently like the original and the Brambelberry Rose flavor.

Something I’d also recommend but haven’t tried yet are sheet facial masks. I’ve seen a lot of women do this recently, and I’ll have to try it out too. When the lights go off, I’d be walking to the bathroom and see a pool of women before me with their masks on. Jealous! Just apply a sheet mask (in others words, the least messy type of mask) and it’s like heaven. Twenty minutes later, skin is refreshed and plump with moisture, not to mention it’s like having a mini spa experience in the air.

  • After the flight

It’s best not to pile on makeup before leaving your flight because it hasn’t been washed in a while, and it will only cause clogged pores and breakouts. The best, really, if you’re concerned about how you look (but really, who gives a hoot – you were on a long flight!), just apply some lip color and slip on a pair of sunglasses and tie your hair up; you’ll look fresher instantly.

Last but not least, and probably pretty obvious, but after long flights I just feel gross… so it’s time for a good scrub! Take a good long shower and then (hopefully) go to bed and get all the rest you need. (Am I the only one who thinks flights, airports and traveling is extremely tiring? For those who want even more tips, this post can help everyone out as well, not just air stewardesses: Skincare and Makeup Tips for Flight Attendants.)

I hope I’ve given you some useful tips for those going on flights! Do you have any beauty regimes while you’re on a flight? And do you even ‘care’ about beauty and your looks when you’re on a flight?

Want your powder eyeshadow to, um, I don’t know – do what it actually promises and stay on for a little longer than an hour? Yeah, me too.

This week’s beauty tip is a “3-in-1″ tip on how to make your eyeshadow stay on longer, since I heard a few of these different methods and I just had to share:

beauty-tip-pic

Method 1 is simple; which is applying a thin layer of eyeshadow primer underneath your eyeshadow. (Urban Decay and Benefit makes some good ones.) If you don’t have specifically an eyeshadow primer, applying your concealer on your lids will help greatly. (If you do apply concealer, top it off with a layer of loose powder before your eyeshadow).

Method 2 requires some water: Take your eyeshadow brush, wet it, and apply your eyeshadow. Wet eyeshadow not only allows the eyeshadow to stay put longer, but also makes the color more intense and brighter.

Method 3 is to apply cream eyeshadow first, then your regular powder eyeshadow. Bonus points if the cream eyeshadow is almost exactly like the powder eyeshadow color, as it will also help intensify the color.

… In other words, if you’ve seen a similarity between all methods, it’s that having a cream-like product underneath your powder eyeshadow is the way to go.

Personally, I’ve found the concealer method to work, (I like Benefit’s Boi-ing and Laura Mercier’s Secret Concealer) only because I haven’t tried an eyeshadow primer and the wet method just yet; but I am sure they work just as well. Also, for eyeshadows that last a little longer than normal without these methods in my experience, M.A.C. and Bobbi Brown seem to be the best.

What do you do to keep your eyeshadow staying on longer? I’d love to hear your tips that we can add here – of all the makeup ‘peeves’ I have, this must be #1!

I asked, you answered! I’m gonna try getting more tutorials up once I start getting the hang of it. I’ll start off with a tutorial on my favorite look (and very first love), smokey eyes.

I love this look for a number of reasons – first, it is so simple to do. Really, once you get the hang of it you can do this in 5 minutes, flat. Second, no matter what your eye color, the intensity of the black eyeliner will make your eye color ‘pop’.

I’ve been doing this look since I was 15, and 6 years later, I am still loving it – my love for eyeliner will never die. Give me some eyeliner and I’m be one happy panda.

Alright, so first and foremost, grab your stuff: eyeshadow of your choice (mine is a neutral champagne one), black eyeshadow, black eyeliner and mascara.

So simple, only 4 products! Let’s get started.

One of the greatest beauty way to relax is to give yourself a pedicure in the comfort of your own home. (Here are more beauty ways to relax and de-stress.)

(Sure, getting a professional pedicure is even more relaxing, but I would’nt want you to spend money on extravagant pedicures – unless it’s for a special occasion – when you can do it just as well at home.)

So here are my tips on giving yourself a great at-home pedicure. It may not be exactly what the “professionals” do but it works for me, and hopefully it will help you out.

As always, if you have any other suggestions or ideas, do add them into the comments. :)

What you need:

  • nail polish: base coat polish, nail color, top coat
  • conditioning oil
  • cuticle stick (optional, a nail file will do fine as well)
  • a nail file
  • a tub
  • warm water
  • foot scrub
  • towel

What to do:

1. Start with completely bare nails. Grab a bowl large enough for both your feet and fill it half with milk and half with warm water. Place your feet in and allow it to soak for 10 minutes or so.

2. Drop conditioning oil on your cuticles and massage gently, allowing your cuticles to become even more softer. Gently use whatever tool you prefer (a nail file with a curved edge does the trick for me) and gently push back your cuticles. Clip off anything that is hanging off, if not, gently pushing them back will be fine. Not having any cuticles can lead to infections!

3. File your nails so that the edges are smooth, and also to the ‘shape’ you want them. I normally do my toenails in a square shape, which is fairly easy to do: just file straight across! If you like your toenails to be more rounded, start filing as if you were filing them straight, then go back to the outer corners and file them into the center in a circular, ’round’ motion.

4. Soak your foot in a little tub, to create your very own foot bath. This could be simple warm water in the tub, or you can add a cup of milk to smooth your skin as well.

Remember: keep the water lukewarm in case of any spills, so no accidents happen. Still, be careful when handling the warm water and don’t fill it up too much – just enough water that goes under your ankles is fine.

5. Apply a foot scrub (you can make this DIY scrub recipe and use it for your feet) and then wash it in your foot bath. Let soak for as long as you like, but the recommended time is no more than 15 minutes.

6. After your foot scrub, dry your feet with a towel. Grab your nailpolishes – base coat, nail polish, and top coat – and find a quiet spot that also helps you reach your feet easily. What I normally do is sit on my couch and put my feet on the coffee table. Easy access!

7. Apply your base coat. Allow to dry for at least 7 minutes. (If you have a super quick drying formula though, it could take less time.)

8. Apply two coats of the nail polish color, with a 10 minutes interval from the first coat to the second. If you’re like me and only like deep dark colors on your toenails, wait at least 15 minutes.

9. Next, apply your top coat and then leave your nails again for at least 7 minutes.

10. Last but not least, once your nails are completely dry, apply moisturizer all over your feet.

I personally like to give myself a pedicure when I’m watching a DVD and have snacks all around me, because there are quite a few waiting intervals and the movie will help the waiting time pass much faster. Also, I like to multitask. :) Do you do pedicures at home?

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think any girl wishes for stubby, short and sparse eyelashes. Although I hate the way it has become part of a beauty ‘standard’ for women, simple mascara can make anyone – regardless of their eyelashes – have lush long lashes, so why not give it a try? I sure did and now I’m in love. :)

I can be really honest and say I love eyelashes – on everyone! It just gives such an innocence beauty to the face and really compliments the eyes. (Cue in point: babies! Don’t you think they’re so adorable with their tiny lashes, or am I the only dork that notices it?!) Anyway, here are some of my tips to getting the full potential from your eyelashes, without falsies.

Treat them.

There are plenty of mascara conditoning serums out there that claim to make lashes grow longer, thicker and darker.

I’ve tried Mavala Double Lash in the past and though I can’t say I saw any miracles, my lashes did become stronger and darker, so I find these conditioning treatments work to ‘protect’ the lashes. I suppose our eyelshes are like the hair on our head – when conditioned and treated kindly, it does look much healthier! Another option I tried in the past that I’ve heard works (though I stopped due to greasiness and fear of milia seeds) is to take a clear plastic wand (steal them from MAC like me, hehe), apply a VERY thin coat of Vaseline, and gently apply to lashes.

Curl them!

Never underestimate the power of a few ‘presses’ from an eyelash curler! I am always so lazy about this and don’t like to destroy my lashes too much so I don’t do this often, only on special occasions – but daamn! They really do make all the difference. Another trick to get the most of your eyelash curler is to curl your lashes like this:

  • Apply your eyelash curler to the base of your lashes and press gently, increasing in pressure slightly. Hold for about 10 seconds.
  • Next, hold your eyelash curler mid-lash, and press ever so gently for a few seconds.
  • Lastly, aim your eyelash curler at the very tips of your eyelash, and hold for a few seconds – this last tip really ‘pops’ your eyelashes out even more.

Build the base.

There are two options for this next step; the powder trick or the base mascara.

  • The powder trick is really simple, I’ve read that this simple trick is used on the runways! All you have to do is close your eyes, and sweep some loose powder over your lashes. (Careful they don’t go into your eyes.) The powder ‘sticks’ to your lashes, making them more dense and thicker when applying mascara next.l'oreal-mascara-double-extend-base-coat-mascara
  • Base/primer mascaras are sold separately and are normally white in color – they are the step right before applying mascara, and are said to thicken and lengthen your lashes with its fibers and formula. L’Oreal has put out some mascara that has both the base and mascara that are quite afforable, you should check them out.

Last but not least, mascara!

And finally, the next step is to apply the mascara. If you don’t know how to apply mascara, you can read my post, Make Up 101 – How to Apply Mascara.

Also, one of the best tips I heard when applying mascara is to position your mascara wand at the base of the root, and ‘wiggle’ it in a zig-zap motion as you apply the mascara, root to tip.

Another tip I’d like to share is to use two mascara formulas; a lengthening mascara and a volumizing mascara. (Although, if you had applied a base coat mascara, you should probably skip these two formulas and just apply your regular mascara – too much product and your lashes might weight down, or even worse, end up falling out!) I used to do this tip until I found my favorite mascara that does both! All you have to do is this: Apply your lengthening mascara first (one coat) and then finish off with a thickening mascara, which is heavier in product. This thickening formula thickens the lashes you just lengthened, so voila, you get the best of both worlds!

I recommend.

As always, here are some mascara recommendations that I have found and loved – please feel free to add your own recommendations in the comments, and thanks in advance!

  • Lancome Virtuose - I know I’m always singing it’s praises but it really is a great mascara. I’ve tried some other great mascaras after finding Virtuose, but I always come back. It has the perfect formula of length, volume and not to mention, it holds a curl like nobody’s business, which is a huge plus for me – like I said above, I don’t like using a lash curler too much for fear of breakage. This mascara creates a curl as well. You can read my full review here.
  • Clinique Lash Power – Another great mascara. In fact, I really, really, like this one – I would love it more than Virtuose but it lost out on it’s curling power. There are two versions, the normal one, which my friend Christine reviewed here, and the Curling version, which I reviewed here. I really loved this mascara, but like I said in my review, it lost out a bit in the thickening department. It’s still amazing, though.
  • Maybelling Great Lash – This is either really loved or hated (from what I’ve read) but I do like it – it gives a very natural, lengthening look. Great for an everyday look. Also, it is very dark which I really liked! You can read the full review here.
  • Chanel Exceptionnel – I wrote in my review that this mascara had many ‘flaws’, and I still believe it does, as it gets dry and clumpy very easily. However, when it’s brand new (the first 2 weeks) it’s fantastic and really ‘lifts’ the lashes up.

I hope my tips have helped! Have you heard any of these mascara tricks before? What do you do to get your best lashes ever? :)
