Hair

I start this post with a confession …. I hate washing my hair. I really, really do. It’s just too much work! I’d rather sit in the shower and just let the water run down me while I day dream. This is probably why I don’t wash it often.

Gross! Do you have lice?! I hear you scream. Don’t worry – it’s nothing crazy like a month without washing, and I hear that it’s actually good and healthy to skip the shampoo once in a while. It lets the natural oils from the hair condition it, which is the best for the hair, really. We know that washing everyday is safe if you prefer it, though it would be better to wash it every other day.

Anyways, there is a miracle product that does help me out in between washes – dry shampoo. Where has it been all my life? In my nasty high school days when I would only wash my hair when it itches (now that’s gross) I would sprinkle baby powder into my roots to soak up all the gunk and my hair would look instantly fresh. However, in today’s beauty industry, there are so many different dry shampoos.

Dry shampoos help clean, absorb grease, scent the hair, and creates light volume. Plus, it gets makes the hair look a whole lot better in general. I highly recommend it for those lazy days – it is really a great product.

Here are some that are available today:

Gisele Bunchen is probably one of those few lucky ladies who just has good hair.

When I saw her Volkswagen Commercial, all I noticed was her amazing hair – a very modern take on the 1940s hairstyle made famous by the iconic Rite Hayworth. Curls like these are not only seen on Gisele but on other A-listers like Scarlett Johannsen, Karolina Kurkova and Kyra Sedgwich.

Celebrity hairstylist Terri Apansewicz made a video at Modelinia.com on how to re-create this iconic look, and also shared it with us!

I was a very indecisive teen during highschool. Every 3 months my best friend and I would terrorize our local hairdresser.

“Gimme a perm! I want to be blonde! Straighten my hair! Gimme layers! Gimme extensions!” My most ridiculous request? “Please give me curly hair underneath, ONLY. I want the top of my head to be straight, and underneath to be curly! Woohoo! Oh, and dye the curly bit black, and leave the rest my natural brown.”

What the heck?! Where did I get that idea from? In two days, my best friend had two perms and bleached her hair blonde! (She still has hair, in case you’re wondering.) You can bet she had to chop off half her hair and deep condition like crazy for the rest of the year, though.

Poor hairdresser. We still go to her today when we’re in town. :-) The thing is, we didn’t really need to have that second perm, or almost faint when we saw our hair turned out red instead of ‘rich brown’ – simply showing a picture of what you want to a hairstylist will help much better than words.

So here’s my tip:

Bring photos to your hairstylist of what you want – and specifically DON’T want – it really helps them greatly. Instead of using words, use visuals to explain.

The reason? One inch to you might be different for them (for whatever reason). I once asked for 2 inches off my ends, I got 4 inches off. Sigh.

Any crazy hair stories to share?

No matter what I do, my hair always seem to look like a lion’s mane. And no matter how often I cut my hair, it seems to always end up in breakages and split ends. Solution for extra dry locks? Deep hydration!

Deep conditioning your hair allows your hair to really soak in the moisture it needs. So far, I’ve been trying to do this once a week which seems to work well.

Here’s what to do:

  • Wash hair. Squeeze out excess water (so that your hair is still damp).
  • Apply your choice of a deep conditioning hair mask. (I would recommend Redken’s Extreme Rescue Force, Aussie 3 Minute Miracle or Pantene’s 3 Minute Miracle.)
  • Wrap hair with cellophane or a shower cap.
  • Use the warm setting of your blow dryer and slightly heat up your head so that the conditioner will penetrate into the hair cuticle.
  • Leave on for however long you want – the longer the better! (At least 15 minutes, though.) For seriously dry hair, try leaving it on overnight.
  • Remove the cellophane/shower cap, and rinse hair with the coldest water you can stand.

There we go! I hope it helps :-) What do you do to keep your hair healthy and soft?

Here’s an interesting, quick hair tip I haven’t heard before from Allure magazine (and was published in their Aug ’08 issue.)

Condition your hair before you shampoo. That way, you’ll still get the moisture and elasticity, but you’ll wash out any residue that can weigh down fine hair.

Thoughts? I might have to try this; you have not seen flat hair ’til you’ve seen mine! (Although dry shampoo has been helping me these past few months, it’s the quickest way I’ve found volume so far. If your hair is still having trouble getting volume, my post 8 Ways to Get More Volume in Your Hair may be of help.)

What do you think of this tip from Allure? Seems like it would make sense. Does anyone do this trick?

I first bought this product for my Mom, as she says her hair is like straw and I’ve been hearing raves about Redken’s All Soft range. Apparently it has mysteriously disappeared from her bathroom, and I certainly have nothing to do with it! ;)

Anyways, my plan was to innocently borrow it for one wash so that I could review it for this site, but I fell in love; what can I say. So it stays!

Advanced silkening formulas contain Redken’s exclusive Interbond Conditioning System and illuminating Silk-Luxe Complex to provide dry hair with intense softness, replenishment and strength. Hair is wrapped in softness with increased manageability, movement and luminous shine.

First of all, I think this does more than Redken’s Extreme Force, strangely enough. I always thought that the Extreme line would do more for damaged hair. Anyways, one application of the All Soft conditioner and hair feels extremely soft. I might be crazy but I do see gold glitter in the product … very weird! It smells heavenly and ugh, it’s just overload of softness!

There is really nothing more to say, this product does what it says and I’m one happy customer. I am definitely going to check out the rest of the All Soft line. I think their deep conditioner, Heavy Cream, is next on my list.

Does anyone have a conditioner that they swear by? I’d love to hear – though I love this I would still like to experiment and compare!

Happy New Year! I hope everyone is having a great 2009 so far – I am very excited for the new year; and for whatever the future holds!

I can honestly say 2008 was a good year. I am so blessed and just have the most wonderful people around me. I am so happy I started Beauty Fool and all the great ladies I’ve met through my site :-)

Anyways … before I get too sappy, 2008 was a great year beauty-wise as well! I found lots of new products that have already become staples in my beauty routine and definite ‘it’ products for me.

In no particular order, here are my best beauty finds in 2008!:

  • Redken Extreme Anti-Snap – I sang praises for it on my review of it here, but it really is great. While there are many leave in conditioners out there, I find Anti-Snap doesn’t weight the hair at all, and I can feel a difference in my hair within seconds. Also, the smell is just wonderful. It’s a little on the expensive side, but this lasts for quite a while so I find it is well worth it.
  • Lancôme Virtuôse Mascara – I’ve always loved Lancome mascaras and this one is no different! One gripe I have about it is that once the tube starts to dry out a bit (after 2 months or so) the mascara is very dry and doesn’t have the glossy, true-black color it normally has when the product is new. Other reasons why I love it? Read my review!
  • L’Oreal Elnett Satin Hairspray – This is by far a great beauty find. I wrote a post about it here, and how it is used by stylists all over the world – and I understand why. It is perfect, that’s all there is to say!
  • Chanel La Ligne Professional Duo Eyeliner – This was a funny product I stumbled upon. It was my famous impulse buy of 2008, which turned out to be great. Wet or dry, this eyeliner can create a daytime, natural look, to dark, deep dramatic eyes. They just came out with a brown version of it, too.
  • Bond No. 9 Chinatown Fragrance – I decided to add this one on the list purely because it was nothing I ever smelt before! It is very strange; but in a good way. My classmates were telling me how sexy it smelt, haha! You can read my review here.

What are some of your best beauty finds you found in 2008? I’d love to hear what everyone’s best finds were!
