Want your powder eyeshadow to, um, I don’t know – do what it actually promises and stay on for a little longer than an hour? Yeah, me too.

This week’s beauty tip is a “3-in-1″ tip on how to make your eyeshadow stay on longer, since I heard a few of these different methods and I just had to share:

beauty-tip-pic

Method 1 is simple; which is applying a thin layer of eyeshadow primer underneath your eyeshadow. (Urban Decay and Benefit makes some good ones.) If you don’t have specifically an eyeshadow primer, applying your concealer on your lids will help greatly. (If you do apply concealer, top it off with a layer of loose powder before your eyeshadow).

Method 2 requires some water: Take your eyeshadow brush, wet it, and apply your eyeshadow. Wet eyeshadow not only allows the eyeshadow to stay put longer, but also makes the color more intense and brighter.

Method 3 is to apply cream eyeshadow first, then your regular powder eyeshadow. Bonus points if the cream eyeshadow is almost exactly like the powder eyeshadow color, as it will also help intensify the color.

… In other words, if you’ve seen a similarity between all methods, it’s that having a cream-like product underneath your powder eyeshadow is the way to go.

Personally, I’ve found the concealer method to work, (I like Benefit’s Boi-ing and Laura Mercier’s Secret Concealer) only because I haven’t tried an eyeshadow primer and the wet method just yet; but I am sure they work just as well. Also, for eyeshadows that last a little longer than normal without these methods in my experience, M.A.C. and Bobbi Brown seem to be the best.

What do you do to keep your eyeshadow staying on longer? I’d love to hear your tips that we can add here – of all the makeup ‘peeves’ I have, this must be #1!

I asked, you answered! I’m gonna try getting more tutorials up once I start getting the hang of it. I’ll start off with a tutorial on my favorite look (and very first love), smokey eyes.

I love this look for a number of reasons – first, it is so simple to do. Really, once you get the hang of it you can do this in 5 minutes, flat. Second, no matter what your eye color, the intensity of the black eyeliner will make your eye color ‘pop’.

I’ve been doing this look since I was 15, and 6 years later, I am still loving it – my love for eyeliner will never die. Give me some eyeliner and I’m be one happy panda.

Alright, so first and foremost, grab your stuff: eyeshadow of your choice (mine is a neutral champagne one), black eyeshadow, black eyeliner and mascara.

So simple, only 4 products! Let’s get started.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think any girl wishes for stubby, short and sparse eyelashes. Although I hate the way it has become part of a beauty ’standard’ for women, simple mascara can make anyone – regardless of their eyelashes – have lush long lashes, so why not give it a try? I sure did and now I’m in love. :)

I can be really honest and say I love eyelashes – on everyone! It just gives such an innocence beauty to the face and really compliments the eyes. (Cue in point: babies! Don’t you think they’re so adorable with their tiny lashes, or am I the only dork that notices it?!) Anyway, here are some of my tips to getting the full potential from your eyelashes, without falsies.

Treat them.

There are plenty of mascara conditoning serums out there that claim to make lashes grow longer, thicker and darker.

I’ve tried Mavala Double Lash in the past and though I can’t say I saw any miracles, my lashes did become stronger and darker, so I find these conditioning treatments work to ‘protect’ the lashes. I suppose our eyelshes are like the hair on our head – when conditioned and treated kindly, it does look much healthier! Another option I tried in the past that I’ve heard works (though I stopped due to greasiness and fear of milia seeds) is to take a clear plastic wand (steal them from MAC like me, hehe), apply a VERY thin coat of Vaseline, and gently apply to lashes.

Curl them!

Never underestimate the power of a few ‘presses’ from an eyelash curler! I am always so lazy about this and don’t like to destroy my lashes too much so I don’t do this often, only on special occasions – but daamn! They really do make all the difference. Another trick to get the most of your eyelash curler is to curl your lashes like this:

  • Apply your eyelash curler to the base of your lashes and press gently, increasing in pressure slightly. Hold for about 10 seconds.
  • Next, hold your eyelash curler mid-lash, and press ever so gently for a few seconds.
  • Lastly, aim your eyelash curler at the very tips of your eyelash, and hold for a few seconds – this last tip really ‘pops’ your eyelashes out even more.

Build the base.

There are two options for this next step; the powder trick or the base mascara.

  • The powder trick is really simple, I’ve read that this simple trick is used on the runways! All you have to do is close your eyes, and sweep some loose powder over your lashes. (Careful they don’t go into your eyes.) The powder ’sticks’ to your lashes, making them more dense and thicker when applying mascara next.l'oreal-mascara-double-extend-base-coat-mascara
  • Base/primer mascaras are sold separately and are normally white in color – they are the step right before applying mascara, and are said to thicken and lengthen your lashes with its fibers and formula. L’Oreal has put out some mascara that has both the base and mascara that are quite afforable, you should check them out.

Last but not least, mascara!

And finally, the next step is to apply the mascara. If you don’t know how to apply mascara, you can read my post, Make Up 101 – How to Apply Mascara.

Also, one of the best tips I heard when applying mascara is to position your mascara wand at the base of the root, and ‘wiggle’ it in a zig-zap motion as you apply the mascara, root to tip.

Another tip I’d like to share is to use two mascara formulas; a lengthening mascara and a volumizing mascara. (Although, if you had applied a base coat mascara, you should probably skip these two formulas and just apply your regular mascara – too much product and your lashes might weight down, or even worse, end up falling out!) I used to do this tip until I found my favorite mascara that does both! All you have to do is this: Apply your lengthening mascara first (one coat) and then finish off with a thickening mascara, which is heavier in product. This thickening formula thickens the lashes you just lengthened, so voila, you get the best of both worlds!

I recommend.

As always, here are some mascara recommendations that I have found and loved – please feel free to add your own recommendations in the comments, and thanks in advance!

  • Lancome Virtuose - I know I’m always singing it’s praises but it really is a great mascara. I’ve tried some other great mascaras after finding Virtuose, but I always come back. It has the perfect formula of length, volume and not to mention, it holds a curl like nobody’s business, which is a huge plus for me – like I said above, I don’t like using a lash curler too much for fear of breakage. This mascara creates a curl as well. You can read my full review here.
  • Clinique Lash Power – Another great mascara. In fact, I really, really, like this one – I would love it more than Virtuose but it lost out on it’s curling power. There are two versions, the normal one, which my friend Christine reviewed here, and the Curling version, which I reviewed here. I really loved this mascara, but like I said in my review, it lost out a bit in the thickening department. It’s still amazing, though.
  • Maybelling Great Lash – This is either really loved or hated (from what I’ve read) but I do like it – it gives a very natural, lengthening look. Great for an everyday look. Also, it is very dark which I really liked! You can read the full review here.
  • Chanel Exceptionnel – I wrote in my review that this mascara had many ‘flaws’, and I still believe it does, as it gets dry and clumpy very easily. However, when it’s brand new (the first 2 weeks) it’s fantastic and really ‘lifts’ the lashes up.

I hope my tips have helped! Have you heard any of these mascara tricks before? What do you do to get your best lashes ever? :)

Hands up those who is in love with Kristen Stewart’s eye makeup? (Those with your hands down: you’re weird.) The girl has permanently sexy, smokey eyes; and I for one can admit I’m jealous. Very jealous. Who does her makeup?!

kristen-stewart-eye-makeup-1

Kristen has beautiful olive green eyes and one thing’s for sure; she has a damn good makeup artist! From all her recent premieres she’s been attending (or shall we say headlining!) she seems to stick to the same eye makeup: smokey eyes to bring out her beautiful green color. Here’s her makeup for the past two Twilight movies; the first for Twilight in 2008 and the second for New Moon this year!

I think the epitome of her eye makeup look was showcased on her recent November issue of Allure, which in a word is stunning. It shows Kristen as we know her – her messy hair, nude lips and intense eyes. Also, you can see that the makeup applied is how she wears makeup to premieres, so it does seem to be her ’signature look’!

What’s great about this look too, is that the colors are ‘neutral’ so it can suit any eye color, not just green eyes.

shu-uemura-feather-false-eyelashes

If you have been following me on Twitter (oy, follow me so we can chat!) you’d know that last weekend I went to a dance club (!!!) and brought out the fake lashes for that extra little touch.

Plus, I was planning to road test it because I want to write a how-to, since it’s party season. (I hope you also enjoyed my tips on how to survive a night of partying and still look good the next day!) I encourage you all to try out false lashes at some point, you may learn to love it - they make eyes look just that little but more sexy and sultry.

Whether you want them out-there like Lady Gaga or as understated and simple as Angelina Jolie (below), false lashes can be a great way to enhance and bring attention to your eyes. Here’s my guide on how to apply false lashes, whether it is a full strip or individual ones.

What to do:

(First and foremost – get your tools! You’ll need your false lashes, eyelash glue and tweezers.)

lady-gaga-eyelashes1. Squeeze out a bit of eyelash glue to the back of your hand or a piece of paper. Make sure it’s in good reach!

2. Take your tweezers and place it on the lashes – not the root – and pick it up.

3. Place the base of your lashes into the glue, so that the full line of the base is covered in glue.

4. Blow on it for about 5 seconds, and let it cool for about 10 seconds. You want the glue to feel ‘tacky’ instead of runny, or it will run all over your eyelids and will slide off!

5. Once the glue feels a little tacky, place it on the base of your lashes, as close to your lash line as possible. Try not to blink if you can and use your fingers or tweezers to gently ‘push’ the false lashes down.

angelina-jolie-false-eyelashes6. Again, try not too blink too often for the next 20 seconds and allow it to set.

7. Once it’s set, I will take my normal mascara and apply it to my lashes and the false lashes, so that they ‘bind’ and stick together so that there will not be any weird two-layer of lashes going on. The false lashes are supposed to look like your own, so putting it with your natural ones will look the best.

8. Last but not least, though this is optional: You can apply liquid liner on the top of your lashes to ‘hide’ the false lashes line. Liquid liner was pretty much made to hide away the false lash line. ( I recommend this liquid liner, it’s amazing.)

Extra Tips:

  • If you want a very natural look and fill in a bit gaps, you can buy individual ones to fill them in. These are the ones I used and will continue to. The reason is that you look like you have naturally full, thick lashes.
  • If you’re trying out a full strip false lash, place it on your lash line to see if it’s too long, and trim it so it fits your eye. Also, trim the lash on the inner corner – trimming off the outer corner, where the eyelashes are the most dense, will cut off all it’s flare.
  • A lash glue I would reccommend is the one by Revlon – my goodness! It is SO sticky that you will never fear that your lashes fall off mid conversation. (I’ve heard horror stories.)
  • When removing the false lashes, do not do so quickly after you come home. I mistakenly tried to rip them off but lost about 4 precious lashes in the meantime! Instead, run your lashes under some warm water to ‘release’ the glue and it will be very easy to gently pull them out.

Do you wear false eyelashes? Would you have any other tips to add? :) Oh, and which are your favorite brands to recommend? I’ve heard Shu Uemura and MAC are the best, though I haven’t tried them yet!

eyes

The eye is the window to our soul, or so the saying goes. So why not take care of it? This week’s beauty tip is not so much an actual tip, but a reminder: when handling makeup and beauty products, don’t forget to be gentle, especially in the delicate eye area. Constant tugging, pulling and rubbing can lead to sagging and lines. Who wants that when you can avoid it?

beauty-tip-pic

  • Apply eye cream with your ring finger – the least pressure – and pat it on, instead of rubbing it in.
  • When removing your makeup (more info on that in my post, How do I remove my makeup properly?), be gentle. Press the soaked cotton ball of makeup remover on your lids first, to ‘loosen’ up the makeup. This will allow your makeup to be removed easier, so you don’t have to rub your eye area too hard.
  • When applying eyeliner, be careful not too tug your eyelids too much and be gentle when applying your eyeliner. You can make it easier by warming the pencil lead with your fingers first, to allow smoother application.

So remember, handle with care around your eye area! :)

dark-eye-circles-panda-eyes

Aw pandas. They are so cute, no? Their eyes are so soft and innocent – a look, however that does not suit humans… . I’m talking about dark eye circles. Dark eye circles and I are best friends. Or rather, she’s one of those friends that won’t go away even after several attempts to ditch her. Well, I’ve decided she and I should stop our toxic relationship, because she makes me look horrid; which lead me to this post.

OK seriously though – I have eye circles from hell. After realizing that concealer isn’t really doing anything anymore, I decided to dig deep as to what dark eye circles are and how to banish them for good. Unfortunately it’s not so good news.

What are the causes?

Even doctors agree that dark eye circles are difficult to treat. Most of the causes come from discoloration, poor blood circulation … and get this – your parents! Yup, dark eye circles is a combination of heredity and genetics.

Brownish colors are pigmentation common in dark skinned ladies, while purple and blues are a sign of bad circulation and poor sleeping patterns. Fragile and damanged blood vessels underneath the skin can also be a cause, as well as allergies.

How do we get rid of them?

Like I said – not too good news for us who suffer with dark eye circles. Fortunately, there are a few options out there:

  • Sleep. It’s more effective than any cream or laser procedure. Unfortunately for us, 12 hours of sleep everynight is just not going to happen. A good 8 hours minimum should decrease some of the color in your eye circles. My post, 10 ways to get better sleep may be of interest too.
  • Eye creams. Although they rarely do much work, its worth a try. I have some friends who swear by them, but me … well, I don’t think they work for me. (I’ve been using Clinique’s All About Eyes, though I think it’s great for prevention, it’s not really helping my dark eye circles). Either way, look for ingredients such as glycolic acid, which gently exfoliates. Vitamin C, Vitamin K and kojic acid are good for lightening, and green-tea is great for anti-inflammatory.
  • Concealer. Yup, when all else fails, use makeup. I haven’t used many concealers but I highly recommend Benefit’s Boi-ing and Clinique’s Derma White Concealer. So far, they are the only ones that seems to banish my hideous eye circles.

Sigh. This post is as dissapointing as my post about getting rid of cellulite! There are laser and plastic surgery options for dark eye circles as well, but if you are going to go down that road, I suggest you do your research very carefully and choose a doctor that has been recommended to you.

Do you suffer from dark eye circles? What products do you use? It’ll be great if my fellow dark eye circle sisters can give us all some recommendations or extra tips! Thanks in advance. :)

eyeliner

Speaking of eyeliners (guyliners to be exact), V asked me this question recently and I thought it’d be a good post – no one likes smudged eye makeup, do they?!

How do I put on eyeliner so it doesn’t smudge within a few hours?

It may be extra hard for those with oilier lids to keep eye makeup and eyeliner on. Apart from getting a good eyeliner that doesn’t smudge (waterproof formulas are the best), there are a few tricks you can try out.

  • First, sweep your eyelid with some loose powder to soak up any oil.
  • Apply your eyeliner, whether it is ink or pencil. (Here’s how to apply eyeliner).
  • Next, take a fine eyeliner brush and apply a eyeshadow over your eyeliner line to really ’set’ the eyeliner. I like to do this step twice, just to be extra careful – and I never get smudges. It also works for the lower lash line as well.

So to sum it up – the best way for eyeliner to stay put and not smudge is to have a base and top ‘coat’ of powder.

What do you do to keep your eyeliner from smudging? Oh, and if you have beauty question as well, just e-mail me and I’ll be more than happy to help!
