Celebrity Looks

The very gorgeous Charlize Theron (and Academy Award winning actress, thank you very much) was featured in January’s issue of Glamour where she spilled her beauty tips. (While we’re at it, how gorgeous is the cover with Katy Perry on it? I love all the color and Katy’s dress and makeup is to die for – such a flirty, cute Valentine’s Day look!)

Anyway, back to Charlize – I really love these types of features, that they actually dare to admit that their looks are thanks to makeup, and dare to share exactly what they use. (How annoying is it when a celebrity non chalantly says everything you see is natural? Please. That’s why I really like Kim Kardashian – she spills it all!) It makes them seem very much down to Earth.

First and foremost, Charlize recognizes the number one skin care tip, one she learned from her mom: “Sunblock. She never left the house without it. For most of my life, I’ve been diligent about applying it to my face.” For cleansing her face, Charlize loves the drugstore brand Cetaphil (my review on the product here).

For her hair, Charlize loves Kiehl’s Tea Tree Oil shampoo. “I love it because I color my hair and my scalp gets dry. It really moisturizes.” She also knows the importance of keeping your hair free from damage, a tip I wrote about on preventing split ends and further damage: laying off the styling tools. “When I’m not working, I don’t use a blow-dryer, so you’ll see me running around with wet hair. It I give my hair a break from heat, it does really well.”

For makeup, Charlize likes to show off her natural beauty. Her makeup looks are always timeless and classic, with shades of golds to frame her beautiful blue eyes. Still, she has learnt to experiment and play with makeup looks. “I’ve become more experimental with my makeup – I even wore fuschia lips to a screening recently. I never used to do anything like that!”

Still, she keeps her face makeup fresh and light: “I don’t like foundations that are cakey or heavy – you see them on top of your skin. I use loose luminescent powder instead of compact.” (For more info on types of foundation for your skin type, check out this post.)

Of course, Charlize’s fragrance of choice is J’Adore by Christian Dior, where she is the current face of the ad campaign. She says of the iconic fragrance, “There’s something adventourous about J’Adore – it reminds me of traveling.” Traveling in a private jet, I suppose – just look at the bottle! It screams class.

Her favorite makeup product of all? Something we can all get ourselves at our local drugstore: “Cherry ChapStick!”

Do you agree with any of Charlize’s beauty tips? What do you think of her product recommendations? :)

I really need to stop getting girl crushes because RPattz is getting a bit jealous. But I can’t help looking at their amazing hair and makeup styles! First Alexa Chung’s style, Kristen Stewart’s eye makeup, and now Hayley Williams of Paramore’s hair and makeup – all great girls who have amazing style that I admire … OK, am totally jealous of.

I’ve loved Paramore for some time now and was really impressed with their new album, Brand New Eyes, and when I saw the music video for my fave song, Ignorance, I gasped. I love Hayley’s bright red hair and strong eye makeup, so I had to post. Also, let’s just be honest – the girl is beautiful.

Skin

Hayley did a guest blog post on Seventeen.com all about her beauty secrets, and she especially wrote about her skin and hair. For her skincare regime, she uses the La Roche Posay skin care line and Elta SPF 45 sunscreen everyday. She says though these products are costly, they are worth it because her skin has never felt better – it got really bad from the stress and lifestyle of touring. Plus, she adds, “I’m obsessed with skin.”

Hair

Hayley has sported various hair colors such as red hair, blonde hair, orange, black… and looks amazing with all of them.

Personally I love red the best,(thanks for asking) but whatever color you are planning to dye your hair to, here are some tips; especially because it’s such a bright color:

  • First and foremost, I know it’s boring, but read the instructions on the box. With subtle colors you can afford to make mistakes, but not with bright reds and oranges! Read the instructions carefully and be informed on all the steps.
  • Start off by applying Vaseline all around your hairline to keep it from running down your skin.
  • Apply the haircolor gel with a comb carefully, making sure you don’t miss out any bits.
  • Wrap your hair in a cap for however long the hair color box advises.

For those with darker hair colors, I’m afraid the dreaded bleach will be needed. If that’s the case, I highly advise taht you go to a hairsalon and get it done properly instead of at home. Ask your stylist for tips on how to keep the color bright, and how to ‘update’ your roots at home.

Hayley advises that the way she gets at least 3 weeks of solid bright color is to “try to part from the shower a few days…liberate yourself. Use Johnson’s baby powder or Bumble and Bumble’s hair powder (which comes in a few different colors) in the roots to keep your hair looking full and (sorta) clean between washes.” She then washes her hair with color-safe shampoo in freezing cold water.

To style her hair, Hayley uses Redken wax and to keep her hair in good condition, she uses Redken Extreme Anti-Snap leave-in conditioner. (Good choice too, I love it and highly recommend it as well!)

As for her haircut, it seems to have remained the same for a few years. Ask your stylist for a mid-length cut (just above your chest), long, choppy layers, and a side-swept bang … et voila! Rock and roll! Now on to my favorite topic …

Perhaps it is a bit ridiculous to make such a big deal about a change in haircut, but … well, I will now add to that ridiculousness because it gave me an idea for a discussion post.

Reality TV star Kate Gosselin, and mother of eight (how good does she look?!) endured 20 hours of hair extensions to get her new hair, and long gone are the days of that famous spiky ‘do. She really does look like a new woman, no? What do you think about her transformation?

Anyway, I brought it up because I wanted to ask if you had done the same: Are you doing anything to your ‘look’ now that it’s 2010? Did anyone go for a “new-year-new-you” makeover? I’ve been toying with the idea of starting the new year by getting a digital perm to transform my straight hair to big curly waves, but I haven’t taken the plunge yet!

To state the obvious, Camilla Belle really is a belle. Her makeup looks are always classic and sophisticated, so now we need to steal her beauty secrets.

The actress has appeared in movies like Push, The Ballad of Jack & Rose, 10,000 B.C., and one movie I enjoyed – but was a little bit strange – The Quiet.

Camilla’s beauty looks tend to be the same: her staple are her bold, statement eyebrows, simple eyes and a bright lip. Also, her hairstyles are classic old Hollywood an stunning – I think she really pulled off her short haircut she got earlier in 2009, don’t you think? Anyways, here are some ideas in getting Camilla’s beauty look too.

First, keep your skin simple and fresh. Camilla uses Dr. Hauschka for her skincare, and uses Dr. Hauschka Quint day cream everyday. She told InStyle in 2006, “I use very light products. I also don’t wear makeup unless I am attending an event, to avoid clogging my pores.” She also takes Vitamin C everyday, which she said is a “huge improvement”. (Check out my post all about the skin and benefits of Vitamin C for more info!)

Camilla also loves dishing out her beauty tips. She told an online magazine some of her suggestions for a hot date.

“Definitely less is more,” she said. “Guys want to see what you really look like, so dab on a little gloss first. [She loves Chanel lipgloss.] Then some mascara, for sure. That’s probably the most important thing.” Her favorite? Rimmel Extra Super Lash Mascara. “I love Rimmel,” she said. “And you can get that anywhere. I get it at CVS.”

She also shares her secret to her statement, signature brows: don’t wax. “I don’t wax,” she admits. “It slowly damages the skin around your eyebrows, so I’m kind of against it. It’s always either threading or plucking for me.” (Read these tips for eyebrows like hers.)

Overall? Keep your skin simple and fresh, keep yours eyes simple with some eyeshadow and mascara, and your eyebrows groomed to perfection. Also, remember to load up on Vitamin C and finish your look off with Dr. Hauschka lip balm, which she “never leaves home without.” For events, pick a bright pink or a red lip color to really show off your lips.

She summed up her beauty routine in InStyle: “The most I wear is mascara and some eyeshadow. I always put moisturizer in the morning before I leave the house, and I make sure to wash my face really well at night.”

But what about her classic locks? She doesn’t say much, except that it is her natural color and that she washes it every other day with different brands. She continued to InStyle, “I change brands all the time, maybe out of boredom, but it seems to work.”

Either way, Camilla’s hairstyles are classic, with bangs thrown in now and again.

Whether it’s a short wavy ‘do, classic Marilyn Monroe curls or her natural straight hair, keep it simple – no crazy teased updos or fancy colors for her!

What do you think of Camilla’s classic makeup and hair looks? Isn’t she gorgeous? :) I really love how she has such a mature, classic beauty – very old, glamourous Hollywood.

Highly ancipated movie of the year, New Moon is finally out … and what a great way to end the year off. (Although I wish there was more Robert, hehe). I realized last month that my mom and I haven’t seen a movie together in 12 years (!!!) so when New Moon came along I forced her to come see it with me. :) We both enjoyed it, and I thought Bella (Kristen Stewart) looked even more beautiful in this movie than in Twilight.

Though the movie was just released, Norma Hill-Patton, the Makeup Designer for New Moon, shared what products she used on some of the characters of New Moon. I’ll keep updating this post as I get more info, so check back often – I’m really eager to hear about Bella’s makeup, I found her eye makeup very ‘natural’ and so sweet and pretty.

Bella Swan/ Kristen Stewart

Skin:

Chantecaille products were used on the lovely Miss Stewart. Products included Future Skin, Water Flower Fluid, Biodynamic Lifting Oil Free Fluid, Stress Repair Concentrate eye cream and Flower Harmonizing Cream.

Hair

Kerastase products were used on Kristen’s hair, namely Bain Mirior Shampoo and Conditioner and Nutri-Sculpt mousse for volume.

Makeup:

  • Chantecaille Future Skin Oil-Free Foundation
  • DuWop Reverse Eyeliner
  • DuWop Reverse Lip Liner

While the exact products used for her eye makeup has not been revealed, the makeup artist did share how you can get the look at home. First, sweep peachy-ivory eyeshadow all over your eyelids. Take a fine brush and apply a brown eyeshadow on top and bottom lash line, as if you are applying eyeliner. Finish off by applying a darker brown eyeshadow at the creases of your eyelid for more definition. Voila! Simple, brown eyes.

Also, if you loved Bella’s makeup in Twilight too, you can check out exactly what was used for Bella in the first movie, here: Makeup Used in Twilight.

Hands up those who is in love with Kristen Stewart’s eye makeup? (Those with your hands down: you’re weird.) The girl has permanently sexy, smokey eyes; and I for one can admit I’m jealous. Very jealous. Who does her makeup?!

kristen-stewart-eye-makeup-1

Kristen has beautiful olive green eyes and one thing’s for sure; she has a damn good makeup artist! From all her recent premieres she’s been attending (or shall we say headlining!) she seems to stick to the same eye makeup: smokey eyes to bring out her beautiful green color. Here’s her makeup for the past two Twilight movies; the first for Twilight in 2008 and the second for New Moon this year!

I think the epitome of her eye makeup look was showcased on her recent November issue of Allure, which in a word is stunning. It shows Kristen as we know her – her messy hair, nude lips and intense eyes. Also, you can see that the makeup applied is how she wears makeup to premieres, so it does seem to be her ’signature look’!

What’s great about this look too, is that the colors are ‘neutral’ so it can suit any eye color, not just green eyes.

I‘ve seen actress Zooey Deschanel in many movies, but I didn’t think much of her movies until (500) Days Of Summer – I seriously recommend it! It’s a no BS romantic comedy that is not only realistic but hilarious. Definitely one of my favorite movies this year.

I also love Zooey’s 60s look – the hair, makeup and style is just so refreshing. I caught an interview with InStyle she did some time ago where she talked all about her favorite makeup, and thought I’d post. She also sounds so cool! Hope you enjoy.

  • Face. “OK. This is the best concealer: Shu Uemura Mark Cealer in Beige No. 4. Here are two blushes that I love: Delux Beauty Flush Stick in pink and Age of Innocence by Fresh. Both are good for fair skin. Sometimes I use powder, and I like Pink Flurry Sheer Shimmer powder by M.A.C.”
  • Eyes. “To create the Brigitte Bardot look with eyeliner, I use Maybelline Eye Express Easy Lining pen in Brown Mink. I like Lancôme Definicils for mascara. For eye shadow, M.A.C Goldmine is good with red lipstick if you have blue eyes.”
  • Lips. “For lips I use Stila Lip Rouge in the Smooch shade. But usually I wear M.A.C Brick lip liner. I love makeup!”

Last but not least, check out this video where she talks about some of her favorite products, amely NARS blushes and Benefit’s Benetint. She also offers up some beauty advice and her beauty style, so take a look!

… And I think I love her. And not only because she shares my love for Lancôme mascara. Has anyone tried some of her makeup choices? Oh and to state the obvious, isn’t she beautiful?! I love her light eyes and dark hair!

I don’t know much about Alexa Chung, except she is part Chinese (which must mean we are long-lost sisters), she has the coolest British accent and she has amazing style. (Oh yes, and the obvious: she’s gorgeous. I ADORE this Harper’s Bazaar cover!)

I’d also been reading everywhere that she’s the latest ‘It’ girl and a VJ on MTV; and after seeing countless photos of her AMAZING style (I love her hair too), I decided to cyber stalk her and see what her makeup, hair and beauty secret and tips are. Here’s what I found.

Skin

Alxa is blessed with great skin, and she told FabSugar recently that she really doesn’t do much to it.

“I don’t wear much makeup,” she said. “I literally never get spots. Literally. I’ve had them about one time in my life. I’m just saying, it has nothing to do with products. That’s all crap. I drink water and I have good genes. I do use Declèor. They have an oil that’s really nice because I have really dry skin actually.”

Hair

It’s very simple getting hair like Alexa. First, cut it off! Then, go to a salon and ask them to dye the ends at least 3 shades lighter than your natural color. “[At the salon,] I had to ask for ‘frosted tips,’ a phrase that should never be uttered by anyone the least bit embarrassed by their own vanity,” Alexa said. Take note! Better yet, we all know that in salons visuals are better than words.

The basis of Alexa’s hair is this: chin length, center-part, brown hair, with blended-in blonde highlighted tips. To get hair like that at home, you’d need a highlighting hair-kit and apply the hair color sparingly from your ears down to your tips. Use a hair comb and randomly take sections of your hair and start applying the hair color anywhere from the ear downwards, or chin downwards. Mix it up at different lengths to it doesn’t look like two blocks of solid color, rather; let the hair color blend in with the brown.

This photo I found shows off her haircut and color perfectly (looks like someone got the two-tone look right), so if you want this style and color too, print out this picture and tell your hairdresser, “gimme!”
