At the start of the year, I wrote about the launch of Fabulous: All About 50 Top Beauty Bloggers of 2010, a book all about the beauty blogging world. And though I ordered the digital book version… it wasn’t enough. Finally, the print version was released on Amazon.com and I managed to grab a copy.
It’s funny how things change so much. When I was doing this interview last year in November, I was asked about my future plans and all I yapped on about was how I wanted to write in magazines. And though I still want to write, I am thinking more to writing books, which is something different altogether! (Or maybe both?)
Anyway, I hope you’ll support Nicki Zevola, the author of the book, and grab a copy. She’s done a brilliant job and I can’t thank her enough for wanting to feature Beauty Fool and I. The book gives all sorts of tips, tricks and information about the ever growing beauty blogging ‘industry’, as well as interviews with over 50 of the top beauty bloggers around the world. You can buy it online at Amazon here. In the meantime, here are some pics I took of my feature, I hope you like it. :)

There are only a few things I aspire in my life: wear makeup and write about it. (OK, not really, but you get the point.) And that’s where Beauty Fool came in, so it’s also a dream of mine that maybe someday my little blog will go places….

Thank you for willingly coming back to visit and taking the time to read my crazytalk! I am really blessed. :)

Teen Vogue has a great article out about Australian supermodel Mirander Kerr, who has just finished writing a book on self esteem and health advice for young girls. I had no idea about this, but I think it’s awesome! I know some might think; what does she know about self-esteem … look at her! However, she might know what she’s talking about – she studied psychology, naturopathy and nutrition at school. And like I say over and over, doesn’t matter if you’re a young student, the president or a supermodel – everyone deals with self esteem issues.
Here’s an excerpt of the article:
“I love to read! I’ve come to consider some of my favorite books as trusted friends I can always depend on,” she says. Her love of the written word is exactly why she recently completed her latest project, a book called Treasure Yourself.
“Your teen years are when you create a foundation for the rest of your life, from habits to ideas of who you think you are and what you believe you are able to accomplish. A confident teen is more likely to set out to achieve what she dreams of simply because she thinks she can. I want to contribute to that.”
And her signature positive attitude has served this 26-year-old well, from her gig as a Victoria’s Secret Angel to her multiple magazine covers.
“One thing I tell girls who want to break in to the industry is that there’s no such thing as ‘looking’ like a model. There are so many different shapes and sizes, and everyone has things they want to change: freckles in odd places, dimples where they might not want them, and hair where it shouldn’t be. Just remember that picture-perfect doesn’t exist — perfection is you, just the way you are.“
What do you think? Would you take advice on a supermodel and buy this book? I’d love to read it, if anyone knows anything on release dates, do let me know! :)

One beauty book I really like is Bobbi Brown Teenage Beauty: Everything You Need to Look Pretty, Natural, Sexy and Awesome
. Not only is is pack full of beauty and makeup tips for beginners, Bobbi emphasizes on the importance of inner beauty; which is especially important for women in this age group. The book starts off with Bobbi’s ten basic rules of teenage beauty, which I feel is great advice for every age – so great I have to steal it and share it with you all (I give credit of course). So, without further ado, makeup queen Bobbi Brown’s basic rules of teenage beauty …
- Rules do apply. Knowing what’s appropriate with makeup really matters. Save the drama for the school play or going out. Whether you are 13 or 19, just keep makeup simple and natural for school and everyday hanging with your friends.
- Finger paint. It’s not cool or modern to be too perfect with makeup. Dabbing on a lip stain with your finger is the way to go. Be loose. Spread it on. Have fun with it. Don’t be too glued to the mirror. Express yourself! What’s the worst thing that could happen? You’ll have to blend a color to tone it down or, if you’re really unhappy, wash it off and start over.
- Skip foundation. You don’t need all-over foundation. And don’t be concerned with highly technical makeup techniques, like contouring or shadowing. Just cover up what really bugs you and let your skin show through everywhere else. (For girls who are older than their teens, all-over foundation is completely fine; here’s how to do it.)
- Sheer genius. The perfect teen colors are sheer ones that you can see through. I like to use pale shades that look like natural washes of color on the face. Look for natural or soft pastel tones, nothing dark or bright. (P.S. These colors tend to be pretty mistake-proof, too.)
- It’s fine to shine. I love shimmer shadows and lip glosses for teens – nothing looks more beautiful. The exception: Super shiny faces, which look good in fashion magazines but not on the face in the mirror. Don’t try this at home.
- Dewy is awesome. Think cream, not powder. When buying look for a creamy formula – it looks more natural and goes on more easily. (Dewy is great for all ages – remember my last post on Charla Krupp’s book, How Not to Look Old
? This was one of her tips to look younger as well.)
- It’s only nail polish … Bright orange? Army green? Metallic blue? Why not? It’s inexpensive, easy to change and fun to look at.
- Shop around. Your local shop may be perfect for glam but you may want to invest more in your skin-care products.
- Avoid a makeup war. As long as you are still a minor, your parents still make the rules and you should try to be respectful of their wishes. If you choose to go against the rules, just be smart enough to go to something natural like brown mascara or pink lip gloss.
- Never say never. Keep an open mind about new ways to wear makeup.
What do you think of Bobbi Brown’s tips? I agree on all of her tips, maybe except the sheer makeup and pastel colors; you guys know how much I love my black eyeliner :) And how great is the model on her book? I think she’s gorgeous and her makeup is amazing – natural, simple and shows off her stunning face. I love it; this is what makeup is all about!

What’s your take on aging, ladies? Are you terrified of getting ‘old’? I am sure everyone can admit, at some point, that getting (and looking) older scares them just a little bit.
I’ve been writing a few anti-aging posts lately on prevention (moisturizing, sunscreen, etc.) because I do believe, personally that if you do want to appear younger (and feel it) there are other ways than just the usual plastic surgery route.
Clara Krupp’s best selling book, How Not to Look Old
may be of interest for those who want to look and feel younger. Here, she shares some of her tips:
Charla’s Top Ten Ageless Secrets to Take Off Ten Years
- Pick pink for your pout.
- Arch your brows upward.
- Don’t outline your lips with a dark liner.
- Whiten your teeth.
- Cut some bangs.
- Switch from powder to cream blush.
- Soft is better than hard (makeup).
- Illumination is better than darkness (face, hair).
- Moist is better than dry (skin, lips, eyes).
- Slim is better than heavy (eyeliner, clothing).
Do you agree with these tips? I have not read her book (let me know if you have, and if you recommend it!) but I have to agree with the list above – they are easy tips to make anyone, regardless of age, look ‘fresher’. Let me know what you think! :)
I very briefly mentioned that I am more interested in Bobbi Brown’s Makeup Manual than I did with Sephora’s beauty book, which came out earlier this year.
However, one of my friends got it for her birthday last month, and she very kindly lend it to me for a while… so I got an even closer look than when I scanned through it at the bookstore!
In Sephora: The Ultimate Guide to Makeup, Skin, and Hair from the Beauty Authority, fashion and beauty journalist and former Sephora beauty editor Melissa Schweiger personally introduces the people behind some of your favorite brands and fills this gorgeous book with the beauty secrets usually reserved for insiders.
Each chapter is designed to mimic a Sephora store’s “try everything” vibe while revealing the finest beauty tips and tricks for getting creative with cosmetics. From an A-to-Z glossary of terms and ingredients and a shopping guide to the best products, to detailed explanations of how to properly use cosmetic tools, Sephora is the complete beauty package that no woman will want to be without.
Apart from the many, many product recommendations (obviously, I wouldn’t not expect it!) there are tons of tips on how to do the makeup basics, skincare topics, interviews with the many creators of the brands they carry, and general information on tools, ingredients, and how to find your skin type.
Overall, I don’t mind this book, but some of the chapters may not be of interest to those who are just buying it to improve their makeup skills or general knowledge. Everything is very basic, and I honestly cannot really trust their product recommendations, because obviously it’s the brand’s the sell.

Since the holiday season is coming up (I’m already in the holiday spirit!) I thought I should start posting on some ideas for holiday gifts.
I think a beauty book would be a great gift for those girls in your life who are starting out with makeup. In my circle of friends we all started getting beauty books or starter makeup kits around our 14 birthday (except me!!!) Or you could show them my Makeup 101 series. Ha! ;-)
Anyways, Bobbi Brown has come out with a brand new book, Makeup Manual. It has EVERYTHING you need to know from her 25 years of makeup experience, whether you’re a beauty fool or an expert. ;-)
Bobbi looks at everything from skincare basics to every aspect of facial makeup–from how to find the right color and type of foundation for any skin tone to how to apply every detail of eye makeup (Brows, Eye Liner, Eye Shadow, and Eye Lashes) no matter your eye color and shape.
Of course there are never-before-seen tips on blush, bronzer, lip liners, lipstick, etc. Each chapter has thorough step-by-step basic directions for makeup application and easy-to-follow photographs and line drawings, along with Bobbi’s expert, yet assuring, advice.
Plus, there’s a groundbreaking section of the book that will be of special interest to women who’ve wanted to know how makeup stylists do what they do: the top beauty secrets only these artists know, essential equipment to keep on hand, how to break into the business, and how to work with photographers and celebrities.
I’m definitely going to check this one out. I was tempted to buy the one released by Sephora earlier this year, but I flipped through it at the bookstore but I didn’t really like it! I have always liked the way Bobbi Brown focused on natural beauty and enhancing what you have – their eye shadow colors are so earthy and beautiful!
Bobbi Brown Makeup Manual: For Everyone from Beginner to Pro
is a steal at US$20 at Amazon.
Did anyone have any beauty books for when they were starting out?
