Body, Health & Fitness

Perhaps one of the most popular new year resolution is that this is the year you will ‘get healthy.’

Anyone who knows me will know that I am not one of those people – although I’ve always hated the ‘bad stuff’, aka sodas, alcohol (very bad) and smoking (even worse), my diet isn’t the best. Not to fear though – I’ve been slowly changing my diet late last year, and this year I’m going to really enforce it.

With that being said, I have a confession to make: I love junk food.

And even though I consider myself pretty fit and health– oh, who am I kidding? A happening night for me includes Ben & Jerry’s ice cream, rainbow sprinkled donuts, and Swedish candy. And don’t get me started on those sneaky 4am calls to McDonald’s delivery WHICH I KNOW NOTHING ABOUT. Right. Moving on…

But 2010 is a new year, and I told myself to learn how to stop the junk food cravings and start eating healthy. So far in the last months of 2009 and this January I’ve been pretty good and taking everything in moderation (I wouldn’t say ban junk food forever – life is too short; just don’t overdo it), so I’ve decided to share some of my tried-and-tested tips. Let’s call this my beginner’s guide on how to getting healthy for the junk-food loving, channel-surfing, lazy bum like me:

  • Take daily vitamins tablets.

The first thing you can do it to take a daily multi-vitamin tablet. I know there are some squabbles over whether or not vitamin pills are necessary or even good for you, but it really can’t hurt. I personally think they are great and have started taking one every morning, and will add a few others soon. The famous Dr. Oz takes a multivitamin for Vitamins A-E, Omega 3, and Calcuim pills. I think he’s knows what he’s talking about, so I’d recommend we all do the same!

  • Try out every fruit and vegetable possible and find your favorite.

The #1 thing you can do that benefits your health is to change your diet. Incorporate more fruits and vegetables. As my Mom likes to say, “eat like Adam and Eve did”, meaning all fruits and vegetables. However, this is the hardest thing for me. As someone who despises vegetables, this was quite a difficult task: I forced myself to try a lot of them to see if I liked any. And guess what? I found out I like broccoli, spinach, cauliflower, asparagus, mushrooms and a few others. Who knew? Do the same for fruits too. Try as much as you can and then collect your favorites and make it a point to eat at least a few of each – fruit and vegetable – each day. DO IT!

  • When eating your meal, eat the ‘healthy’ stuff first.

I’m sure you’ve heard of the diet tip that you should eat a salad before your meal, so you eat less of the main meal? Forget that – salads still gross me out. Instead, when eating your meal, eat the healthier stuff first. That means start with the vegetables, next to the protein, etc. I found this worked for me because normally I’d gobble the carbs right down, and would be too full to touch the healthy stuff. if you’re like me, swap the routine!

Vitamin C doesn’t only cure the common cold – it has many, many skincare and health benefits that we need to know about! Whether it’s a skin care product with Vitamin C as an ingredient or consuming citrus fruits or a vitamins, Vitamin C has many, many benefits:

  • It can lighten superficial pigmentation like freckles and melasma.
  • It can also suppress melasma production.
  • It stimulates collage production and a fantastic anti-aging product.
  • Prevents premature wrinkling and scaring.
  • Get rid of the free radicals that can damage your skin.
  • Vitamin C skincare products can help you repair and prep your skin everyday.
  • Exfoliates and cleanses.
  • Boosts your immunity system.
  • Improves sun damage on skin.

Where can you find Vitamin C products? When I had a facial at Marios Badescu, one of the products used on me was their Vitamin C Serum, which is fantastic, I recommend it! Other brands that carry Vitamin C products are The Body Shop, MD Skincare and John Masters Organics.

As for consuming Vitamin C, fruits that have large amounts of Vitamin C are grapefruit, kiwis, oranges, strawberries, tomatoes and watermelons. Also, I wrote about the many benefits of drinking a glass of lemon water that has exceptional amounts of Vitamin C and health benefits.

What do you think? Would you incorporate Vitamin C into your health and skincare regimens? And if you do already, I’d love to hear! :)

I think it’s safe to say everyone and their grandmother will be bringing out their hottest pair of heels to wear this holiday (and party) season.

It’s believed that the way your feet feel determines the well being of your whole body. And with aches, corns, blisters, muscle spasms, calluses, bunions and er… general pain, heels can be one heck of mood spoiler. Think about it; if your heels are killing you and your feet feel like it’s about to fall off, you don’t feel that great and your party night (and not to mention your mood) is ruined.

(I am now having flash backs of sitting at the curb of the road, the ball of my right foot going into spasms as the poor boy next to me tries to calm me down. Later, he has to CARRY me to the cabstand and send me home … Oh, and in case you didn’t know – people like to laugh at others misery. Not fun.)

How to pick out the right pair of heels

high-heels-problems-diagram

First and foremost, and it goes without saying: it’s important you find a pair of heels that actually fit. It doesn’t matter how cheap they were or how gorgeous they are, buying just one size too small or too big is a big no-no. Buying a smaller size leads to pain, pain and more pain, while a bigger size makes you walk around like you’re playing dress up in mommy’s shoes; which, makes you use all sorts of other muscles in the foot, which … you guessed it, equals more pain.

Oh, the trials of being a woman! :(  If your shoes tend to ’slip’ to the front, you can try this hairspray trick I wrote about recently. I also found this fantastic image (click to enlarge) to give you more information on all the downsides of wearing heels.

These are some more general tips on buying the right pair of heels:

  • If you can, avoid pointed shoes. They squeeze your toes together and can create bunions and injuries such as Morton’s Neuroma. A good way to see if your toes have enough room is that you should be able to wiggle your toes without problems.
  • Buy shoes that allow your feet to ‘breathe’ – avoid plastics that are uncomfortable and allow your foot to stay cool. Leather is said to be the best.
  • Try to avoid kitten heels where the heel is very thin. This puts unbelievable pressure to your knees and the ball of your feet.
  • Buy shoes at the end of the day, as your feet expands throughout the day.
  • The ideal heel height is 1-1.5 inches.

How to make your heels more comfortable

Here are some tried-and-tested tips on making your heels the most comfortable possible on your night out.

  • Get backup flats. Bring a pair of flip-flops or your favorite flats in your bag. That is, if  your bag is big enough to fit them in. I used to do this; once the ‘night’ was done with and I’m just left with my friends, I switched my shoes and actually start to enjoy myself and my feet could relax.
  • Cushion up. Many fashionable heels don’t necessary have any padding – no pain, no gain I suppose? It doesn’t mean you have to suffer though; there are many gel pads and cushions inserts available today. You simply stick them to the sole of your shoes. Dr. Scholl’s make excellent ones for every type of shoe and concern.
  • Season them. If you bought new shoes for this new season, wear them around the house a bit to ‘loosen’ them up a bit. I think everyone can relate to wearing new shoes the very same day of buying them and having painful blisters.
  • Band-aid galore. Carry a few (and for your girlfriends; I am known as Band-Aid Queen) band-aids in your wallet, just in case an uninvited blister decides to show up – or make a fashion statement and wear crazy colored, zebra patterned ones, they are sure to spice up any shoes!
  • Baby steps. As in, take smaller steps so there is less pressure on your foot. Long strides create extra weight each time you take a step, which speeds up the chances of aches and pains. And please, no running in heels. Ouch.
  • Limit yourself. Don’t wear heels everyday, unless you want to have procedures in the future such as correcting bunions, ingrown toenails, replace worn out toe-joints, knee or back surgery. Limit yourself to two hours at a party and then slip on your flats for the rest of the night – don’t worry about not looking tall enough or something ridiculous; you wouldn’t want to risk having all sorts of problems just to look a few inches taller, would you? Also, try sitting down for intervals if your shoes are starting to wear you down.
  • Pamper them! End your night with a warm foot bath. Fill a tub full of warm water and just relax and soak your feet, massaging them gently. You can even add a bit of milk to your mixture; I hear it is very soothing for aching muscles.
  • Moisturize. To end, moisturize your feet before sleeping, further massaging them. All that stiff movement in your heels can lead to dry, rough heels and dry lines all over your foot. Moisturize your foot (any body lotion will do, this one will be great) and if you want to take it a step further; after moisturizing, wear socks to sleep to really let your foot ‘drink’ in the moisture and recover from all that pain.

In conclusion; please take care of your feet. I know heels are sexy and everybody loves them, but if you’re going to be miserable and in pain the whole night, there’s no real point, is there? Shouldn’t you enjoy your night instead of worrying about your feet? Not to mention all the other complications heels can start up. Don’t risk it! Take care of your feet and limit the heels, no matter how beautiful they are.

And, as always, I love hearing from you – feel free to add in your own tips on heels – how do you survive a night in them? What do you do to make your heels more comfortable? The more tips, the better. :D

lemon-juice

If applying lemon juice on your hair isn’t your thing, you can always use that lemon for a healthier, better reason, like your well-being!

This week’s beauty tip comes straight from my best friend in London. She recommends mixing some lemon juice in warm water and drinking it every morning. Great timing too – I literally just saw a health program that recommended this tip!

beauty-tip-pic

Lemon is a rich source of vitamin C, as you all may know already. It also contains vitamin B, and minerals like calcium, phosphorus and magnesium, as well as proteins and carbohydrates. Daily consumption of lemon water provides a number of health benefits as it aids in digestive problems, aids in dental care, cures throat infections, controls high blood pressure, acts as a blood purifier, treats respiratory diseases, reduces fevers and is beneficial for your skin. Phew!

So what do you do? Take a glass of warm water, and squeeze half a lemon in it. Best taken in the morning. Let the warmth of the water and the zesty taste of the lemon start off your day!

Does anyone drink lemon water? I’m starting tomorrow morning! :)

yoga-beach-1

Ah, exercise, my least favorite thing to do in the world, after eating vegetables. I’m gotta get a lot of laughs from my family and friends on this topic – seeing as I am LAZY. I mean, the only ’shopping’ I do is online, just ’cause I don’t want to walk around for hours and hours – clicking the mouse is much easier. …I disgust myself. What really disgusts me is that I used to play sports and run track – in middleschool for gym class we would run around the school four times, and it was no problem for me! Ah, to be young again. :-P

Regardless, I have been trying to clean up my act by getting more vegetables and fruits in my system, and now by moving my butt. Since I’m an ‘expert’ in all things lazy, I feel I have enough knowledge to write about this topic – because if I can get off my butt and start exercising, so can you!

1. Set a realistic goal. It would be very nice claiming you will swim the Atlantic ocean this year, however, setting ridiculous and large goals can leave you even more unmotivated! Not only that – imagine how bummed and burnt out you’ll feel when you can’t accomplish it! Try to set smaller, short term goals for now. For example, I have made it a point to take a nice 30 minute walk around my neighborhood every night. It’s a very small start, but, it’s doable! (Not to mention it’s a great stress-buster.)

2. Grab a companion. I really missed the days when my best friend lived across the road, because we used to be so active together: swim, the gym, walking our dogs, everything. Now that she’s moved half way across the world (sob) it seems reeeeeally boring doing all those things alone. So my advice is to do it with a friend! Take a class up together or enjoy some long walks or a nice swim together. Other companions could be your music, a podcast, your dog, etc.

And while we’re on the topic of a companion – upbeat music is a great one. I remember slaving away in the gym one day completely bored out of my mind – the TV wasn’t on and there was no music. Only glum faces all around me … how miserable! If you’re at a gym, don’t be afraid to turn on their TV or their stereo. And if you’re doing your own thing, bring your iPod.

3. Announce it. I find when you announce something to many people, you’re more likely to do it, since they may check up on you and ask how it’s going. How embarrassing, saying you’re going to run a marathon and then don’t bother to do it after! Say, “boyfriend, I’m going for a jog”, “Mom, I’m gonna take Spot for a walk”. You’ll find you will actually do it after saying it out loud as well.

4. Keep it fun! Running on a treadmill for 3 hours doesn’t seem like a lot of fun to me. There are plenty of activties to do that get you moving and are fun; here are some suggestions that even a lazy bum like me likes:

  • cycling
  • “long walks on the beach” ha!
  • badminton
  • hockey
  • swimming
  • Pilates

5. Keep an exercise log. Keeping a short list of what you’ve done and dates of when you last exercised will be a great motivator. I remember keeping one for awhile and looking back and seeing that I had done Pilates, swimming, and walked a few kilometers all in one week (hey, this is a A LOT for me) and I instantly felt good. An exercise log can also help you remember what days you’ve exercised, or when you need to next – not too frequent though, you don’t want to overdo it!

6. Reward yourself. Ah, the greatest motivator in life – something you want, pronto! Whether it’s telling yourself that after the gym you are going to treat yourself with a good foot massage, a new magazine, Ben& Jerry’s Cookie Dough (that would be me), you’d find that you’d be more than willing to do whatever is set in front of you.

If you can’t reward yourself, create anticipation. (Or if you’re like me, do both!) Go to the gym before a hot date. Go to the gym before meeting a friend you haven’t seen in a while. Go to the gym before a dinner party. Then tell yourself, “right, after this you get to see Johnny!”, “after this you can go to Sarah’s birthday party, how fun!” This should keep you going.

7. Remember why you’re doing this. Exercising is not to fit into a smaller jean size or trying to impress a man you like. It’s about you - you being healthy and happy. Not only will you look good, you’ll feel great and are preventing a lot of diseases to your body. As you feel yourself getting fitter and stronger, record it. A simple note on your fridge will be a constant reminder to the get thing you are doing to your body and spirit – exercising releases endorphins, the ‘happy’ chemicals in your brain. That’s why you feel so great after a good run!

I hope some of my tips have inspired some motivation to start getting fit yourself. Do let me know if you have any tips to add. And do share - are you currently doing some form of exercise? If so, what are you doing? I’d love to hear! :D

Ah, the holiday season is upon us! I for one am very excited, I always feel like the whole year is a blur and last months are when all the fun happens! And with all the upcoming Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years Eve dinners and parties, I know all of you are going to ignore my rants and (more rants) and are gonna enjoy yourselves and party hard! That’s fine, the end of the year (and all your accomplishments you have done this year!) is worth celebrating – it’s OK to break the rules a bit (although please, no smoking! There’s just no point to it). And as always, drink in moderation and never drink and drive.

However, you already know the post-party characteristics: hangovers, tiredness, bags, zits and feeling like you are never getting out of bed is part of the aftermath. Whether it’s a small gathering or a big dance club, here are some tips on how to look fresh and have energy the next day after a night of celebrating.

  • Before going to a party, don’t forget to eat something. You know the drill; empty stomach and alcohol do not match.
  • At a party, don’t mix your drinks. You are likely to get drunk too fast – you want to remember the good times the next day, don’t you?
  • Also, if you’re at a place where you don’t know the people. Never leave your drink unattended. Get a trustworthy friend to look after your drink or buy a new one.
  • Before you sleep, you absolutely have to wash your face and remove your makeup. No excuses, lady, this is the number one makeup rule, after all. I don’t care how tired I am, I always do it and always feel relieved that I did the next day. Forgetting to wash your face and removing your makeup and sleeping will lead to clogged pores, zits, eye infections, you name it. Not very pretty at all!
  • Also, whether you’ve been drinking (and especially so if you have) drink two big glasses of water before you sleep.
  • When you wake up, drink fresh juice that is rich in Vitamin C. First of all – yum; and second of all it wakes you up and refreshes you.
  • A warm shower and a good scrub of all the previous nights second hand smoke (don’t you hate that?!), grime and dirt is also needed. Finish off your shower with a rinse of cool water to wake you up!
  • Grab some tea bags and put them in the freezer for 2 minutes, then take them out and put them over your eyes. It instantly refreshes tired eyes and calms eye bags.
  • This is my personal favorite. Some cold eye drops (put them in the fridge the night before!) will cool your eyes and wake them up as well. I love doing this, highly recommended! You can really ‘feel’ all the coolness in your eyeballs!

Those are my tips on how to look remotely alive after a long night. :) What are some of your tricks you do to look fresh ‘the morning after’? I’d love to hear, do add them in!

tanning-bed

Ah, doesn’t the photo above look glamorous? Not! Now with summer over, I know a lot of women may want to preserve the tanned look with some going as far as visiting tanning beds. However, tanning beds are DEADLY and just horrible for your health. There are a few salons opening around my area claiming it’s safe and healthy, which is crazy! Here’s why tanning salons, booths, and beds are a big no-no:

  • The rays in tanning beds are the same as the sun’s. Both give out UVA and UVB rays, the two types of ultraviolet (UV) radiation. UV rays damages the DNA in the skin cells and may make moles cancerous and even create new, cancerous moles.
  • Tanning beds can cause burns, which can lead to melanoma, the most serious and deadliest form of skin cancer.
  • Tans are linked to cancer, and repeated tanning from UV light can lead to the common basal-cell and squamous-cell cancers, with squamous being deadly.
  • They are not doing anything to your mood! One of the “claims” from this tanning salon is that you feel fresh and healthy, like if you were to hang out in the sun. False! It is only sunlight that can trigger the ‘happy’ chemicals we have.

Here’s an article I found that scared me the most:

Tanning beds are just as deadly as arsenic, according to international cancer experts? Research published online in the journal Lancet Oncology concluded that the risk of skin cancer jumps by 75 percent when people start using tanning beds before age 30.

A new analysis of about 20 studies concludes the risk of skin cancer jumps by 75 percent when people start using tanning beds before age 30. Experts also found that all types of ultraviolet radiation caused worrying mutations in mice, proof the radiation is carcinogenic. Previously, only one type of ultraviolet radiation was thought to be lethal.

Read more here.

There are safer ways to get a year-long tan other than tanning beds. Spray tan booths and self tanning lotions are all easy to use (here’s a how-to I wrote on how to apply self-tanner mistake free) and are most of all healthy. So please, say no to tanning beds!

alcohol

One of my more popular posts here on Beauty Fool is Smoking and Its Affects on Your Look. I still get new comments on it even though I wrote it almost a year ago, which is great! In the comments section readers Kelly and Krib both asked about and mentioned the effects of alcohol as the two normally go hand-in-hand.

I really didn’t want to come across as judgmental so I was a little hesitant at the thought of writing this post. However, when I was in a cab this weekend and passed through a popular ‘hot spot’, only to see a young girl passed out on the ground with vomit all over her, I thought it needed to be talked about, but not only on the physical effects alcohol brings, but also the damage it is doing to your health – especially when you drink to the point where you pass out.

Health and Body Effects

I first want to start off with what alcohol and binge drinking does to your body. Studies have proven that yes, a small amount of red wine is beneficial to your heart – but that’s where the advantages end. I want to quote Jason Vale, a highly successful health and lifestyle coach and the bestselling author of a book my parents keep raving about, The Juice Master Slim for Life: Freedom from the Diet Trap. He paints a very scary picture of what happens when you are intoxicated:

You do not need to quit alcohol altogether in order to have a slim, energy-driven body.

simpsons-alcoholHowever it is certainly worth looking at this highly-toxic, fat-producing substance with our eyes very much wide open. This can only happen when we are sober for when we are drunk, we really do become totally blind. Blind to our feelings, blind to our emotions, blind to our behavior, blind to what’s going on around us and totally blind to what we are actually putting into our body – and I don’t simply mean the insulin-robbing, fat-producing alcohol. Alcohol is rarely seen for what it is and we all have this ‘happy-jolly’ image and rarely take a good hard look at what it is doing to us.

But what choice do you have when you are drunk? You’ve lost your normal control, your sugar levels are out of sync, and your body has been stripped of essential fats, vitamins and minerals.

The body now has so much poison going into it that it needs to shut down in order to keep you alive. You are now in a comatose state. The body has such a need to repair itself that even if someone was to pick you up by the feet, swing you around the room and through the window – you still wouldn’t wake up.

The reality is that alcohol kills 40,000 people a year in the UK alone, that’s 100 people a day. Worldwide that figure is about 1 million people. It batters your liver, kidneys, and pancreas; it dehydrates your body; destroys brain cells and can shrink your brain. It eats away your stomach lining, speeds up the aging process, weakens eyesight and causes impotence, diabetes, and obesity. It is a highly addictive drug that can and mostly does keep you a slave for life.

Excerpt, Jason Vale, Slim for Life, Chapter 25, ‘Blind Drunk’, pgs. 209-214.

Scary, no? You can read more diet and life tips from his book The Juice Master Slim for Life: Freedom from the Diet Trap. My doctor and parents recommends it!
