For those of us who has chores to do – or worse, clean a whole house! – try to get into the habit of wearing gloves.

Why? Cleaning agents are extremely harsh for our hands and our nails. Nails actually swell slightly when they are wet, and then shrink back to size once dry. Couple this with harsh detergents, this can cause brittle and broken nails. Also – I don’t think I need to mention how dry and scaly our hands feel after washing the dishes!

Even better, when wearing rubber gloves while cleaning, moisturize your hands fully with hand lotion and then slip on the gloves – you can give yourself a moisturizing hand mask while you’re at it!

What do you think of this tip? Will you be trying it out?

You know when you apply lipstick, and sometimes – especially when it’s a bright, bold color like red – the lines on your lips look more accentuated? Lipstick tends to cake into the lines, making it look “clumpy”, and before long you have little flakes of product on your lips. To make the lines on your lips less noticeable, here’s a simple tip you can try.

When applying your lipstick, instead of applying it across your lips horizontally, apply it vertically.

Doing this makes less product cake into the lines of your lips. Instead, it glides right on and doesn’t allow any product to be caught in between those lines.

I’ve tried this myself, especially with red lipstick and it does look more bold on! What do you think of this lipstick trick? Will you be trying this tip?

This week’s beauty tip has to do with … refrigerators! Yep, you heard me. Did you know that storing some of your beloved beauty products in your fridge makes it perform better and prolongs its lifespan? Here are some products and reasons to keep your products in your fridge:

  • Nail polishes kept in your fridge make the bottle last super long.
  • Skin care creams and serums when chilled helps active ingredients penetrate the skin quicker and better. Not to mention, chilled skincare products feel amazing, especially with eye creams – how soothing for tired eyes!
  • Perfumes are said to last longer in when slightly chilled, though I have not tried this one myself.
  • Chilled body lotions feel wonderful on the skin after a hot bath or shower.

Do you keep some of your products in the fridge? Do you think it works better? I can vouch for skincare items and nail polishes, since I do that myself, but I haven’t tried this for my perfumes yet.

(P.S. Reader Jeanne read my anniversary beauty tip post on how I didn’t know how the heck to Photoshop a proper post-it image, and sent me this one! Isn’t she the sweetest? Thanks Jeanne, it’s perfect! :) )

That’s right … add some color to your look!

beauty-tip-picAs I wrote yesterday and the day before, I am currently in love with coral and fuchsia lipsticks. For some reason I’ve started to love color (and used to just stick to neutrals, so this is a big deal for me!) and it’s been so much fun. What’s after bright, bold lips for me? Bright bold nails, of course!

So my tip this week is to add some color to your makeup. A pop of hot pink to your lips … a line of bright colored eyeliner … a candy-colored manicure … the list is endless.

Add some color and fun to your makeup and I can guarantee you’ll have a smile on your face the whole day – not only ’cause you’ll be beaming with confidence knowing that you look awesome, but also from all the head’s you’re gonna turn. ;)

Do you use bright colors in your makeup looks? Will you be experimenting in the future?

beauty-tip-picI can’t believe I started the weekly post Beauty Tip of The Week 6 months ago … time is flying by and I can’t keep up! It really felt like it was just last week where I had the idea and was doing the little logo for it on Photoshop (it’s supposed to look like a pink Post-It note but I think it looks anything but, sigh).

To celebrate it’s 6 month ‘anniversary’, I figured that maybe this week I hand it over to you and ask for your beauty tips….

So spill the beans – what are some of your beauty tips you’d like to share with us? I can’t wait to hear them all! :)

This week’s beauty tip came straight from a text from my good friend Nat in Sri Lanka – thanks for the tip, Nat! (And if you have any other tips to share of Beauty Tip of the Week, e-mail me).

Reality TV star Olivia Palermo from The City (isn’t she beautiful?) says that she has a great way to zap a zit. She cuts the sticky part of a Band Aid up into pieces and layer it 3 to 4 times over a pimple before bed, and in the morning the pimple is gone.

I have to admit, I love when I hear a beauty tip I’ve never heard before – and this is one of them. I can’t vouch if this works right now, but do tell me what you think – have you done this before, and does it work? I’ll have to wait for a gross zit to pop up before I can try this out myself! :-P

Want your powder eyeshadow to, um, I don’t know – do what it actually promises and stay on for a little longer than an hour? Yeah, me too.

This week’s beauty tip is a “3-in-1″ tip on how to make your eyeshadow stay on longer, since I heard a few of these different methods and I just had to share:

beauty-tip-pic

Method 1 is simple; which is applying a thin layer of eyeshadow primer underneath your eyeshadow. (Urban Decay and Benefit makes some good ones.) If you don’t have specifically an eyeshadow primer, applying your concealer on your lids will help greatly. (If you do apply concealer, top it off with a layer of loose powder before your eyeshadow).

Method 2 requires some water: Take your eyeshadow brush, wet it, and apply your eyeshadow. Wet eyeshadow not only allows the eyeshadow to stay put longer, but also makes the color more intense and brighter.

Method 3 is to apply cream eyeshadow first, then your regular powder eyeshadow. Bonus points if the cream eyeshadow is almost exactly like the powder eyeshadow color, as it will also help intensify the color.

… In other words, if you’ve seen a similarity between all methods, it’s that having a cream-like product underneath your powder eyeshadow is the way to go.

Personally, I’ve found the concealer method to work, (I like Benefit’s Boi-ing and Laura Mercier’s Secret Concealer) only because I haven’t tried an eyeshadow primer and the wet method just yet; but I am sure they work just as well. Also, for eyeshadows that last a little longer than normal without these methods in my experience, M.A.C. and Bobbi Brown seem to be the best.

What do you do to keep your eyeshadow staying on longer? I’d love to hear your tips that we can add here – of all the makeup ‘peeves’ I have, this must be #1!

beauty-tip-pic This week’s beauty tip comes from my mom (her last one was about making your own nose strip, which I hope you found useful!) and said she read this in a magazine a few years ago and it worked for her “quite well.”

If you’re running about your day and noticing your hair is getting a little but frizzy, don’t fret. Take some of your hand cream that you carry around in your bag, rub it throughly through your palms, and finger comb it through your hair. This helps to “settle” the frizz until you get home and takes exactly 2 seconds to do.

So simple! Thanks, Mama. Has anyone tried this tip? :)
