Black Lipstick. Crazy or Cool?

June 15, 2010

in Crazy or Cool,Lip

As we witnessed on my best friend Christine in her recent guest review (and the photo above) black lipstick can seriously change your look. She looked so sweet in the brighter lip colors and then you get to black and she instantly looks dark, brooding and dangerous. (Death stare included.)

Two years ago, black lipglosses were everywhere, with big brands like Lancome and YSL releasing black lipglosses. The products weren’t meant to produce solid black color, though, but was made to be layered over your normal lipstick to give that certain edge.

I thought the lipglosses looked really cool in editorials but I didn’t think it was too wearable for real life. The lipglosses from both brands got a lot of press and I saw them all over the magazines, but I don’t think it caught on to shoppers because the glosses mysteriously disappeared soon after! MAC also launched black lipstick in one of their billion million many collections last fall, but I’m not sure how they sold. (Honestly though – I adore MAC but I really can never keep up with their collections!)

So for the Crazy or Cool feature this time around, I’d have to say black lips is a ‘crazy’ for me. They look amazing in fashion editorials but like a lot of other crazes, it looks better in fashion than real life. ;)

I’d like to know what do you think – can black lips ever be broken out of the goth/halloween stereotype? Would you ever sport black lips?

Def. Imagine all the stares you’d get, although I guess it would depend on your area. In Camden they’d probably not blink an eye, from what I could tell there were a lot of ‘out there’ beauty trends going on! :-P

I love black lipstick, it’s so cool and edgy! I think I’d wear it sometimes to go out at nights, but then you know, I always like to experiment with daring colors. But yeah, it’s definitely not for everyday.

It would suit you, Gio! I guess it really depends on the individual, like with every beauty trend.

Oh, yeah that would be gross. :( Red lipstick smudged on your teeth is already unfortunate enough, let alone black!

I agree that it’s crazy in real life. Black lips should stay in the fashion world.

Definitely not something that will catch on in my opinion!
It’s almost like purple lipstick, a little too much and not very do-able for us “normal” folk. Maybe on the red carpet or for a photo shoot but not everyday wear.

Oh jinx, I just came on here and you wrote something! :D

Yeah, reminds me of deep purple too, although I think purple wouldn’t be as frightening as black in real life. Looks good in photoshoots, though.

Honestly, i always LOVE everything they show on the runway, but Black lipstick, in my opinion, doesnt even look on the runway! It´s just ridiculous!!! It´s nonsense. Because we usually adapt the looks of the runway into our lives in a different way right?! But in this case it´s impossible to find a way to sport it… hahaha I could never wear…

I like dark reds or purples, to a point – but black is next to impossible to pull off in anything but a theatrical setting **or for a very theatrical person! ;)** My opinion simply: I like black for photoshoots and other such creative things, but too much for day to day.

i thinks it’s crazy but cool if you can pull it off
I had a friend in sch who sometime wear black
her thin lips and pale skin makes it perfect for black…
maybe not everyone can pull it off…

i dunno!!!!! this is confusing because lady gaga and lily allen can obvously pull it off,i’d wear it at night but definetly not in the day!

i have mixed opinions when it comes to the black lip trend. to be honest one side of me loves it, it looks fantastic and its very edgy, on the other hand i’d be too chicken to wear it in public ..

I really like black or red/black lipstick. But when I had it on to go out with my GFs, they made me wash it off. They said it creeped them out. :(
