Back to Basics

Nothing is more terrifying than avoiding your own blog because you hated the direction was going.

“What are you on about this time?” you ask. To put it simply, I had always visioned Beauty Fool to be an ‘online’ magazine because my passion since I can remember was writing, and I was (and still am) obsessed with magazine and the media. I also thought that if Beauty Fool was a bit more ‘professional’ and I wrote more ‘formal’, I can add it to my resume when I job hunt, because blogs are still looked down upon from the ‘real’ media. (Sad but true, at least for now.) The only thing is, Beauty Fool is a blog. And blogs are supposed to be fun, personal and real – the complete opposite of (most) magazines.

So: I’ve decided to rid this ‘goal’ I had of BF being an online magazine of some sorts and embrace the fact that it is a blog, because I love blogs and the world of blogging. My favorite blogs are personality-driven, so I don’t know why I wanted to go in the other direction with Beauty Fool. I guess had always been too shy with this “online thing”, but I recently had an Ah-ha! moment (thanks Oprah) and decided I should come out of my shell and make Beauty Fool more personal – at least so you can know the real me; I’ve been shy long enough!

So what changes will be happening here? Well, for starters I already wrote a more personal type of post that I hoped you liked, (and will be adding more in the future) and second I completely stripped the blog design bare. Admit it – the last design was too “high-fashion” and pretentious and I personally hate that sorta stuff! The current design is still in the works but I plan to make it completely Renee – down to my favorite colors for fonts, patterns, images, icons, and whatnot. I’ll also be adding more personal stories and pictures (where relevant, of course, it’s still a beauty blog, don’t worry!) and I really hope you’ll like this direction Beauty Fool is taking.

I would really love to hear your thoughts on this – will you still be reading if I add a bit more of a personal touch? :)

xx Renee

Hey Renee! I do like the look of your blog tons more like this — clean, simple, and fresh looking.

I’m here should you need any help at all ;)

I really like the new layout! :)
And though you don’t usually post about personal experiences, etc, your personality certainly comes through in your writing! And of course I’ll still be reading! ;)

Renee – I’ve always loved your blog! I’ve felt that you have always been yourself and it is very refreshing to see such a real person. I can absolutely relate with the whole being shy thing but you just have to let those insecurities go and let your thoughts flow~ :P

Thanks, Samantha! I haven’t seen you around here so it’s really nice to meat you! Thanks for reading. Yup, I am slowly starting to ‘let go’ and be myself more. :D

Yeah I discovered your blog a little while ago (maybe..a month or so?) but this is the first time I have left you a comment! Love all your posts – keep it up! ;)

AHAHAHAH I just realized I wrote “meat” instead of “meet”. I guess I was hungry when I was writing to you :-P

I’m so glad you found me, thank you for visiting and your kind words :D

Renee,

I love the new look and glad you want to be more “you” on this blog. I think your personality came through even without the personal posts. It’s all in the way you write, which is awesome, btw. :)

Aw thanks so much, Tammy. Yeah I think with writing you can sense who the blogger is and what they are like, but I think design wise it was way too ‘cold’ and I also refrained from certain types of posts because I wanted the blog to be more ‘professional’. So no more of that!

I’m loving the new look (but then i’ve loved all of them).
We already kinda get a feel for your personality through our posts but kudos to you for being brave and injecting more of your personality into your posts.
If you add a personal touch I definitely still read. I absolutely love your blog, pretty much from the beginning. But it would be amazing to have personal accounts.
good luck with the blogging. :)

Thanks, Jeni! I love hot pink too! Basically before I was really obsessed with making it look professional, design wise, what topics I covered, etc, and I wanted it to be more of a ‘blog’ rather than a ‘magazine’ – a bit more personal. :)

The design was a bit cold, no? :-P It was too Vogue to me and not that personal.

Oh, and I want more pictures and personal stuff on DIP!! :D See, this is what I’m talking about … I always love the personal stories and stuff on other’s blogs but I don’t know why I never did it myself. Time to change! :D

Would I love it? HELL YEA!!! I love blogs which have a bit of a personal touch. That’s what makes our writing different from all the mags out there. After all, that’s what makes you different from the next blog as well, no?

Also, the reviews we write are based on our personal experience with the products, and that’s what (I hope) readers are looking for in blogs. Personal experience, and not a write-up purely due to advertisers.

You’ve got a great blog going, Renee. Keep it up and looking forward to see a lot more of you! =D

Thank you so much, Syen! :) I think your blog is a perfect example of having the right amount of personal touch. I agree, I like blogs more cos it’s less magazine and more personal. By the way, do you have a twitter account? :)

Hey Renee, I’ve been reading your blog for so long but only just started to comment (you might remember me from Teentoday and I haven’t forgotten about doing a pic of my make-up bag!).

I thought this post was really nice and I totally agree with what you say – I hate blogs that just regurgitate press releases and it’s the personal touch and being able to trust reviews that makes beauty blogs great and IMHO, often better than beauty magazines! I look forward to seeing the new layout and continuing reading :)
